I keep seeing grown adults using scooters to get around.

AIBU thinking they all look like complete knobs?

YANBU - saw a man on a motorised one in the middle of a busy street in Kilburn last night. Holding all the traffic up as he breezed along. At least the knobber was wearing a helmet though.

ThomasRichard · 05/07/2016 10:17

I plan to get one once DD no longer requires help to steer hers. Judging by her older brother, I'll need it to keep up with them! Plus, it looks fun. I don't really care if I look ridiculous to complete strangers.

EdmundCleverClogs · 05/07/2016 10:27

I think most people who use scooters think the main issue others have is how silly they look. They managing to completely overlook what a huge pain in the arse people on scooters are, anywhere but open spaces.

Waltermittythesequel · 05/07/2016 10:30

I shouldn't, it's awful, but when I see adults on scooters I just cringe for them!

I wouldn't be caught dead.

But that's my issue, not theirs. They likely don't give a shit.

They can be really inconsiderate, however.

SuperFlyHigh · 05/07/2016 10:35

LordyMe - but that's the thing - if I see adults where I work (I admit it's quite posh) - it's totally flat - and they don't seem to be in a hurry - it's quite yummy mummy territory.

and some of them I swear are doing it because - it makes them look more trendy!

Another bug bear - if your child has a scooter and brings it on a crowded train (can't they fold up?) it's not polite to have it shoved into someone else's body/legs etc - this has happened to me and fucking rude!!! Angry

JeffVaderneedsatray · 05/07/2016 10:40

I love my scooter! I use it on the school run otherwise I can't keep up with my children and they have to wait around for me. I ride consideratly and when we get to the busy part of the pavement we all get off and walk.
Then they leave their scooters in the storage at school and I either walk it home as I chat to a friend or zoom home myself.
I love riding it. I love the feeling of whooshing down the small hill near our house (but hate sccoting up it at home time!)
I also have long grey hair, wear no make up and am fat so MN hates me any way.
Meh.
Adult scooters ridden sensibly are great fun.

CuppaToffee · 05/07/2016 10:47

YANBU. They look like knobs. Desperately try-hard hipster twats.

LordyMe · 05/07/2016 10:50

........and some of them I swear are doing it because - it makes them look more trendy!

I guess you are probably right but I promise it's an A to B thing for me. Grin

I am cool though. Wink

NothingIsOK · 05/07/2016 11:57

It's interesting that the main reason people think adult scooter riders look like twats is because they are convinced the scooter riders are doing it to look cool/trendy/hipster.

But they can't possibly be riding scooters for that reason, because everyone knows that most people think adults on scooters look like twats. It's all very circular.

I know people judge. I ride in spite of that. I'd have to be deluded to imagine that I'm oozing cool hipsterness on my scooter. But wait, I'm a twat because I ride a scooter, so presumably I'm stupid and deluded as well.

EmpressOfTheSevenOceans · 05/07/2016 12:15

As long as scooter / bike riders of all ages are clear that pedestrians have total priority (so if that means they can't go above walking speed or have to get off & push, tough shit), that's OK. I can see that scooting on the road wouldn't be safe.

But adults who ride bikes on pavements still look like twats.

throwingpebbles · 05/07/2016 12:54

I don't think people ride scooters to be "cool" I think we are all aware that some people snigger at the mere idea.

It would be a 25 minute walk for me but it's a 6/7 minute scoot. Twice a day that makes a real difference to the length of my commute!

Waltermittythesequel · 05/07/2016 13:05

Even saying the word scoot when you're over 12 just makes me cringe!

I wonder why I'm like that...seriously. I'm not a self-conscious person usually.

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 05/07/2016 13:38

KingLoolieKatz It sounds like a no brainer to me. Grin

IHaveBrilloHair · 05/07/2016 13:43

I'm going to get one when my back is heeled, I fractured it and am currently using a wheeled walker thingy, which I have put pink tassles on, just waiting for , also pink, bell to arrive
I don't care if people think I look like a twat, it's the difference between me being housebound or able to get to the shop on my own.

TransformersRobotsInDaSky · 05/07/2016 13:57

YABU, much better than jumping in a car for a short journey, good on them I say. Personally, I wouldn't use one but I couldn't give a shit if anyone else does as long as they don't run me/DS over in the process.

paxillin · 05/07/2016 15:43

Try and see each one of them as one car that isn't on the road.

Crookers77 · 05/07/2016 15:57

According to many of you, my DH is a knob 😂 He loves a bit of a scoot.....

Why would I NOT just get on my son's scooter and scoot home after dropping him at school? I'm not doing any one any harm, it's fun, gets me home sooner. Just because I'm an adult, doesn't mean I can't scoot.

Natsku · 05/07/2016 16:17

I scooted home on DD's one yesterday, don't care if I looked like a twat, I wasn't going to carry the bloody thing!

And some of you would hate where I live, everyone rides their bike on the pavement here, me and DD do too.

CharminglyGawky · 05/07/2016 16:22

My micro scooter which I saved up for for months and months when I was 10ish in the early 00's is currently in the attic, because I can't bear to get rid of it and I feel like an idiot riding it outside.

I wish people were less judgemental Sad And I wish I cared less!

Most of the negative comments have been about people using them in places it would get in other people's way... Well people who aren't knobs don't do that and people who are knobs would be a knob anyway without the scooter! Even as a kid I knew not to scoot in busy areas or weave in-between people or ever scoot past close enough to risk a crash. The only legs I ever bashed with it were my own!

Natsku · 05/07/2016 16:23

And I am definitely getting a double scooter when I'm old as I'm so jealous of the old ladies I see scooting along with their shopping.

If Dh ever takes the kids to or from school he rides on their scooter or my dd's fluorescent pink bike. He couldn't give a shit. I cringe and then wish I had the guts too. He's over 6ft and an ex copper and rugby player. It's a sight to behold. :o

Lnfb85 · 05/07/2016 18:01

I wouldn't scoot on my own... But as a Nanny I used an adult scooter while scooting with the children. Meant I could keep up with them and we could travel further in the day!

Hopelass · 05/07/2016 18:12

My mum and Step dad do it. DM is in her mid sixties and DSD is 72 Grin I don't think they go particularly fast. DM uses hers to get to the hospital a mile away where she works as it's quicker than walking and healthier than taking the car. I did have a "wtf" moment when DM told me they got them but now I just think each to their own and let them get on with it!

Woolyheads · 05/07/2016 18:14

Adults on scooters is fine. It is up to them. But obvs not on the pavement.
