slugsinmygarden · 04/07/2016 09:07

I keep seeing grown adults using scooters to get around.

AIBU thinking they all look like complete knobs?

YANBU. Morons who shouldn't be on the pavement. Or the road. So grow up and walk.

Binkermum29 · 04/07/2016 10:50

We were moving slowly through London traffic when a knob on a scooter (far too small for him) came flying off the pavement and head-butted the front wing of the car - leaving a sort of death-mask imprint. He had a bloody nose but he could have been under the front wheels, so got off lightly. We had a bloody excess to pay on the insurance and our premium has gone up to eleventy billion pounds because the insurance company couldn't claim from him - he did a runner - or maybe just scooted off into knob land.

Wafflenose · 04/07/2016 10:51

IceRoadDucker some of us are disabled (see my previous post).

Welshmaenad · 04/07/2016 10:52

Can't bring myself to get her up about adults in scooters.

Kids on roller skates in supermarkets though... Angry

SuperFlyHigh · 04/07/2016 10:53

They do look like knobs on them especially on pavements - same as cycling on pavements.

However I work in West London (Hammersmith) and round there in the back streets they're not as dangerous, however in London main streets, absolutely lethal.

SoupDragon · 04/07/2016 10:56

I tend to find that people who think like this are generally dull fuckers who don't know how to have fun.

littlepinkseals · 04/07/2016 11:06

I have a scooter and there is no way I would ride it on the roads - way too dangerous. Potholes, cracks in road, uneven roads, stones in the road, the little wheels on a scooter can't cope with these, unlike the bigger wheels of bikes which can just roll over them.

OohMavis · 04/07/2016 11:10

As soon as I no longer have to hold the hands of my children while we go about town, I'm going back to skateboarding to get around.

I mean I might look like a nob but it's much more fun than walking. So I think yabu Wink

LittleLionMansMummy · 04/07/2016 11:11

I love having a go on my son's scooter when we're out. I don't use it to get around on though, I'm just a big kid.

budgiegirl · 04/07/2016 11:23

I sometimes ride my DD's scooter home from school. I don't particularly care what people think, as long as i'm considerate and look where I'm going, what business is it of theirs what I look like?

I was a bit put out though, when a child hanging out of an upstairs window shouted 'Old woman on scooter - no!'. But that's because he called me old!

throwingpebbles · 04/07/2016 11:35

Yabu. I don't see how it is any different conceptually from cycling.

It saves me commuting time, money and petrol and saves me clogging up and polluting our town centre. It also means I can keep up with our kids when they are scooting and that feels much safer. Most of the mums round me have their own scooter.

My mum even has one to commute into work now!!

PoisonousSmurf · 04/07/2016 11:40

Maybe they were on the school run (returning) and it's their kid's scooter. Would be rude not to use it.

meowli · 04/07/2016 11:45

I would love a scooter but don't have one because I've nowhere to scoot and I worry people will judge!

People judging, Strawberry? Why, whatever makes you think that would happen? Grin

FelixFelix · 04/07/2016 11:48

I saw an adult on a scooter for the first time yesterday! It was a man with dwarfism who I assume used it to keep up with his two friends. I thought it was a wonderful idea.

whathaveiforgottentoday · 04/07/2016 11:54

I ride my eldest dd's scooter down to school when doing pick up. She rides it back. I can do the journey in 5 mins rather than 15 when walking. The streets aren't busy and I get off it when I get close to the school. Don't give a monkeys if you think I look like a knob.

Birdsgottafly · 04/07/2016 12:46

""Mind you I laugh at the guy who uses our local park who scoots there with his 2 year old on daddy and son micro scooters... the son is about five times as fast and agile as him!""

Most of the children using play parks are comparatively stronger (can hang taking their own body weight) and more agile than their Mothers, so I don't see your point, tbh. Two year olds should be like little chimps.

I think anyones a knob, who puts others in danger. I transport people in wheelchairs and am now out with my toddler GD.

The few people that I know, who use them, do so because they have to park their car, or taxi away from their house. Scooters can then be put in the boot, easily.

If people used them on the school run, we wouldn't have so many parking threads.

I admire people who don't care about how they look to other people.

See no issue

Babymamamama · 04/07/2016 13:37

Cycling on footways ie pavements is outlawed for adults under the highways act. This is for safety reasons (for the pedestrians who don't want to be mowed down). Why is a scooter with a full sized adult on it any different?

BabooshkaKate · 04/07/2016 13:40

YABU. Perhaps a generational difference? Lots of those in central London where I work and it seems like a nice and fast way to get around

whois · 04/07/2016 13:47

YANBU they do look like twats.

However they are sooooooooooo much fun. If I had a longer walk to the tube, like over 10 mins, I would prob get one :-)

Mommawoo · 04/07/2016 15:34

Peter Dinklage disagrees.

Mommawoo · 04/07/2016 15:35

I'll try again...

throwingpebbles · 04/07/2016 19:55

babymammama there are lots of combined cycle/pedestrian paths round here. That's what I use when I scoot to work etc and I guess why they are so popular around here for adults.

Again, conceptually how can it be any different from cycling. It's a self propelled wheeled vehicles. Kids and grown ups ride bikes and the same applies to scooters.

SissySpacekAteMyHamster · 04/07/2016 19:59

londonrach think we live in the same area!

I see lots of adult scooter riders and have never seen an accident yet.

Don't get me started on bloody joggers along the South Bank/Blackfriars though....

BusStopBetty · 04/07/2016 20:01

I care not a jot, providing they are ridden responsibly.
