DS, 5, wants to marry male best friend

DS, 5, says he's in love with his best friend, and wants to marry him, and when they're older they're going to adopt children and live in a volcano... the love is fully requited by the best friend!I think it's funny and sweet, but my DH (who is actually a lovely, non-homophobe), who did find it funny, is now finding it slightly disconcerting- anyone else had a DS who ants to marry their male best friend at about this age? I've told DH lots of kids talk about marrying at this age - both my cousins (male and female) wanted to marry my brother when they were little! Not that he wouldn't accept him being gay, but I don't think it's to do with that at this age. Any thoughts appreciated!

When I was 15, the 5 year old boy across he road wanted to marry me.

Never happened, obvs.

DS1 wanted to marry me. DD wanted to marry me.

I fully expect DS2 to want to marry me too. I'm very marriable Grin

Sounds normal to me. Wanting to live in a volcano sounds alarming though.

For people 'reassuring' OP that it's normal at this age to want to marry their same sex friend it's also 'normal' as an adult to want to marry your same sex best friend. So much implied negative here about being gay. I guess we haven't come as far as we'd like to think.

Ds1 at that age wanted to marry his male best friend. He's now 20 and is gay. But I really don't think the two things are related.

YABU - I really don't think it practicable to live in a volcano. Although admittedly I'm not an expert.

Have you considered bungalows or possibly even a tent for the weekend?

I mean - YANBU

Given that the vast majority of stories were about wanting to marry a cat, your mother, or a sibling, I think the general point was "5 year olds have no idea what marriage means" rather than any sort of homophobic reassurance.

DS decided he was a girl at this age. He's decided he's not now.

lazycrazyhazy · 01/07/2017 00:44

Yes my son and his best friend at age 5 used to say they loved "ourchother" and wanted to get married. DS is in his 30s now with a female partner and a child. Later he said he would marry a female friend (he was about 8) "because she knows her tables"... they are funny!

Tell your DH to relax, kids want to marry everyone and everything. I remember wanting to marry my Grandad and later my teacher who was a nun. ds2 wanted to marry his aunt AND his imaginary friend, Bang, (who was gender fluid before that became a thing since some days she was a she and others he was a he) both at the same time and for them all to live together in Blackpool Tower which is way preferable to living in a volcano.

I married half my class at school, it was one of the most popular games at breaktime, after bulldog, of course.

TheDowagerCuntess · 01/07/2017 01:18

Him saying he'd feel the same if DS was a girl, doesn't make it any better.

It's just a thing kids say. They don't know what marriage means, what it entails.

But, you know, some people are gay. His kid might be gay. What's he going to do then?
