He never really got a decent chance. He was one of the most successful Chancellors.

The deficit he ran up was much less than George and Dave have run up during times of "austerity".

He was responsible for many of the amazing welfare introductions such as tax credits that have helped loads of families out of poverty.

OP posts:

Side issue, but does anyone else think Jesus Christ when they read the initials JC

I think in the current scenario that really only works if his middle name in Frances... as in "Jesus Fucking Christ, what has he done today?" :o

nicolasixx · 01/07/2016 15:00

"He never got a decent chance"

  • he lost an election OP. That was his chance right there.
MunchCrunch01 · 01/07/2016 15:09

I think JC reads Jesus Christ when he hears JC - he's certainly enough of a megalomaniac to have a messiah complex!

QueenLaBeefah · 01/07/2016 15:19

David Milliband????

First hint of something not going his way he leaves the country (for an immensely paid job in USA). We do not need another sulker running the Labour Party, thank you.

RortyCrankle · 01/07/2016 15:31

Is this a joke thread? Do you think we've managed to build up gold reserves sufficiently for him to sell it off at rock bottom price yet again? Wasn't it enough that labour left a note for the next government to the effect that there's no money left?

cardibach · 01/07/2016 15:52

I don't think Corbyn should show respect to the PLP - they aren't showing respect to the CLPs - Newsnight asked 50 of them (and it was the BBC, so they won't have asked ones they expected to be pro-Corbyn) and 45 said they still supported him and were angry about the PLPs behaviour. It is not behaviour deserving of respect.
I'm also really concerned about this desire for charismatic personalities as 'leaders'. Being flamboyant doesn't mean you know what the hell you are talking about. Look at Boris. It's a very American idea, and for every Obama it throws up, it throws up many more Trumps. I want my leader knowledgeable and committed before I want him/her to be charismatic.
Labour have lost the last two elections by campaigning from the centre (which feels pretty right wing yo me anyway -politics has shifted). Why do you all think they'll miraculously be successful doing that again?

SukeyTakeItOffAgain · 01/07/2016 16:18

I was saying to DSis only yesterday that JC appears to have these weird messianic mission going on.

Personally I wish Nick Clegg would come back.

SukeyTakeItOffAgain · 01/07/2016 16:20

Queen I think David M going to the states was sulking so much as being incredibly hurt and betrayed by his brother. Sibling rivalry added another dimension to the whole thing.

WankersHacksandThieves · 01/07/2016 16:28

IO had the same view Sukey to me it would have been unbearable for them both to be here after that, so I took it that he was being honorable and keeping out the way so as to not interfere or have it implied that he was. Why do we keep choosing the wrong bloody people all the time?

It's not really about them having to be overly charismatic, just come across as knowledgeable, trustworthy and generally electable with a spark of intelligence. Someone you wouldn't be embarrassed about representing you on the world's stage. That's not too much to ask for surely?

I've been a union member all my life but they need to look beyond their own interests sometimes too when giving their backing to candidates.

AndNowItsSeven · 01/07/2016 16:30

Let me Blair didn't run the poor into poverty Sure starts and tax credits came from his leadership. He was the best pm our country has had.

mrsfuzzy · 01/07/2016 17:17

alltouchedout · 01/07/2016 17:19

Listen, I love Gordon Brown. I am one of the relatively few who thinks he is pretty damn fantastic. But that prospect genuinely has me going "ha ha ha ha ha ha ha oh god".

Owllady · 01/07/2016 17:20

I like Gordon Brown too :o
But my hopes are on Obama. He's spoken the most sense about credit than anyone and I hear he's looking for job

Owllady · 01/07/2016 17:21

Argh brexit. My kindle loves changing it to credit Shock

So him being a war criminal is ok with you is it?

WoweeZowee · 01/07/2016 18:51

"Is that you Jeremy?"

Haha! Grinlois

AndNowItsSeven · 01/07/2016 19:57

Blair isn't a war criminal!

redpinkblue · 01/07/2016 19:59

Dr Gordon Brown Bear! Get him back

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 01/07/2016 20:04

The economy went bat shit crazy as soon as he came into power.
Sorry no I didn't don't and won't like him.

TSSDNCOP · 01/07/2016 20:05

Well it's a funny old world isn't it when you look back fondly at Gordon Brown and hope he'd come back. Stress: I am not saying that, just reflecting the OP who has clearly been on the sauce and gone round the bend

Makes you really see just how bad Ed and Jeremy really have been.

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 01/07/2016 20:08

I think I should remind you. It's July 1st, not April 1st. As I assume this is a joke.
Gordon Brown couldn't lead a piss up in a brewery

MunchCrunch01 · 01/07/2016 20:11

I agree, it's a sign of how bad JC and miliband are that we feel nostalgic for Blair-Brown - brown'll always have my esteem for helping win the better together indyref 1 campaign, he was one of the few that could convey sincerity.

RobinHumphries · 01/07/2016 20:17

Seven Need I remind you Tony Blair took us into an illegal war? So making him a war criminal.

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 01/07/2016 20:23

Side issue, but I do wish people would stop throwing around accusations of megalomania when they encounter democratically elected leaders that they personally dislike. Jeremy Corbyn gets them and so does Nicola Sturgeon. Both have large mandates from their electorate, so they really aren't out on a limb coming up with this stuff in their own heads. Ditto with "cult of personality", which implies that anyone supporting them does it because they have a thing for vests and bikes, not because, you know, they agree with their policies.

LadyIncuntliaButtock · 01/07/2016 20:24

He was responsible for many of the amazing welfare introductions such as tax credits that have helped loads of families out of poverty.

Seriously? He was involved in the introduction of Employment and Support Allowance. You know, that benefit that's probably led to needless claimant deaths through assessments designed for a vast swathe of the genuinely sick to fail.

Tax credits were also plagued by chaos in the early days. A good idea? Yes. Well implemented? Not a chance from the point of view from a claimant hit with a massive end of year overpayment. Don't get me wrong, I think the Tory ideological war on the sick, poor and disabled is disgusting, but Labour are not squeaky clean on this ground either.

Perhaps if he had been a little more magnanimous and a little less of a cunt to the LibDems in 2010, we wouldn't have suffered six years of effective Tory rule, either. Lastly, I live in Gordon Brown's constituency, and I can tell you that there's no love lost for him here, either!
