He never really got a decent chance. He was one of the most successful Chancellors.

The deficit he ran up was much less than George and Dave have run up during times of "austerity".

He was responsible for many of the amazing welfare introductions such as tax credits that have helped loads of families out of poverty.

at PMQs? Confused

As PMs

dontrustcharisma · 01/07/2016 12:33

I reckon Sadique Kahn might get a shot at it if he can do a good job at running London

LurkingHusband · 01/07/2016 12:34

He never got a fair go because he dithered about calling a GE, and could never have the halo an elected PM has (next Tory leader take note !).

If a GE had been held in 2007, even I would have voted Labour, as I would have agreed with the sentiment that I felt GB would be a good PM and needed a chance.

Unfortunately he dodged a GE, and lost any goodwill he had quickly. Subsequent events show he was not a good PM. Not our worst. But certainly not our best.

waitingforsomething · 01/07/2016 12:36

'lefty prick'? Harsh.
I'd take him over today's line-up.

derxa · 01/07/2016 12:38

At least he might be better than Angela Eagle and her plastic Co-op bag.

malvinandhobbes · 01/07/2016 12:38

The problem with Labour voters (and I am one) as that they prefer an intelligent, un-charismatic person at the helm more then they prefer to actually govern.

Governing requires compromise. We need charismatic leaders to bring the country to compromise. It isn't shallow, it is being effective.

HooseRice · 01/07/2016 12:39

Agree, if he'd called a GE and been elected there may have been more respect for him and the Condem coalition may have been avoided, as well as the current cluster fuck Westminster finds itself in.

The person that is voted as leader of the conservatives will to well to call a GE PDQ.

derxa · 01/07/2016 12:40

What about Harriet Harman? (Words I never thought I'd write)

Itinerary · 01/07/2016 12:41

Tony and Gordon? No, they had their day long ago.

LurkingHusband · 01/07/2016 12:43

What about Harriet Harman?

I rank here with John Prescott. Absolutely devastating in opposition (as an 1990s Question Time will show). And totally useless in power. Certainly not PM material IMHO.

MunchCrunch01 · 01/07/2016 12:48

I'd vote for Gordon Brown again in a second. (and Blair, but then I'm a loathesome twatty Blairite). They won majorities, they increased health service funding. They gave Scotland and Wales devolution.

ExitPursuedByBear · 01/07/2016 12:50

I just choked on my tea at 'successful Chancellor'

WankersHacksandThieves · 01/07/2016 12:50

don't want to derail but the whole hawk :o :o :o

I'd prefer anyone of the people mentioned to JC. I've a soft spot for Chuka though.

MunchCrunch01 · 01/07/2016 12:52

yeah people are splashing about on fb that labour membership is surging - this is being viewed as a vote for JC, I certainly know 2 new members (myself and DH) that haven't joined to vote for JC. I didn't like him before and now I'm appalled at his lack of respect for the PLP. I'd vote for almost anyone over JC.

MunchCrunch01 · 01/07/2016 12:53

remember Brown also is viewed as keeping the UK out of the euro - Blair was leaning towards going in. This was a big crisis he averted early on.

FlyingElbows · 01/07/2016 12:55

I can't think about this because I'm totally distracted by "the whole hawk"! Glad someone else brought it up first.

LadyAntonella · 01/07/2016 12:56

I love Chuka too! He's too bright and reasonable to even campaign for leadership though. Just the kind of guy we want in charge! Oh the irony!

imother · 01/07/2016 13:00

JCorbyn is keeping his promise to all the young people who got so excited and engaged in politics when JC was elected.

He's clearing all the pale blue Blairites out and retuning 'new labour' to its socialist agenda and raison d'etre.

I think he's one of the only few politicians acting with any integrity or honour.

(And YANBU OP)

WankersHacksandThieves · 01/07/2016 13:16

What about keeping some sort of promise to the rest of the Labour vote by getting his party into a place where it is electable instead of creating chaos and clinging on where he isn't wanted?

MunchCrunch01 · 01/07/2016 13:19

yes what about the fact he's splitting the party? Centrist politicians always get more votes and then have a mandate for important things. Corbyn has no idea how to compromise, purging your party of disagreeing elements doesn't work so well for vote winning unless you're a dictator.

peachpudding · 01/07/2016 13:27

Sadly Corbyn is lying to all the young rallying to him. They are to young to remember what hard core socialism did to our country.

May will bring the country together and Corbyn will help keep the Labour party beaten down as she does it. Thats team work for you.

Brown only kept us out of the Euro because Blair wanted in, what a pair of tits.

juneau · 01/07/2016 13:37

Grumpy, dour, un-elected Brown? Hell no! I'm delighted he's pissed off back to Scotland and I do wish Tony Blair would fuck off and retire. He was a PR mad, war-mongering, spendthrift in govt and I sincerely hope he's given no role in Britain's Brexit negotiations.

But Theresa for PM? Yes!
David Miliband for Labour leader? Yes!

Let's have some ballsy leaders again who will stand up for Britain, be pragmatic in their dealings with Europe, and feisty at the dispatch box.

SteamTrainsRealAleandOpenFires · 01/07/2016 14:25

Gordon "I'm selling cheap gold.com" Brown.? I think goldsellers in on-line games made more profit than him.

LoisWilkersonsLastNerve · 01/07/2016 14:39

Side issue, but does anyone else think Jesus Christ when they read the initials JC? I got quite confused for a second there.

I would like to see Andy Burnham and Teresa May in charge of lab and con.

RosesareSublime · 01/07/2016 14:42

Ah! The very man who encapsulates the divide between the Politicians and their voters. The very reason you are starting down the barrel at a leave vote? Yes sure, get him back in! The man who turned Labour away from labour into the arms of the conservatives and Ukip.
