Swearing on Mumsnet

Just a simple and maybe even a silly question - but why do people swear on Mumsnet? It just often makes peoples comments come across as so aggressive.....the swearing could so easily be avoided...and the comments come across as more considerd. I am interested to read what others think.....Thanks loads folks....XXX

Bollocks

Really squidgey? All of my female friends use it on occasion and nobody explodes. They are all pretty civilised - one is even quite fancy pants and has a fancy pants surname you would probably recognise.

My mum says cunt Grin

You must know a lot of delicate types!

Cunt is a great word. It shouldn't be such an insult though, cunts are warm and deep, unlike most of the people we call cunts . We should call them cocks or pricks, all hard and ugly.

@WhereYouLeftIt

Yes it is a silly question. And sometimes I swear because I want to come across as aggressive. Or exasperated. Or shocked. Or ... whatever emotion that I feel swearing will convey.

And I feel quite exasperated at kisses - fucking kisses! - at the end of OP's post.

Just because one person enjoys swearing, doesn't mean they have to enforce the filth on others who may be offended by it. Mumsnet is a parenting forum, so children might see it. No need to use real swear words. Just say them to yourself.
WorraLiberty · 14/04/2021 01:05

@MakeMathsFun are you serious?

You've bumped a 5 year old thread to point out that just because Mumsnet is a forum for parents, their kids might be able to read swear words on it? 🤣🤣

Erm...that'll be the responsibility of the parents to stop that happening but I guess you know that...

FILTH! rings bell

I can only wonder at what someone searched for to pull up a thread from 2016 about swearing.

WorraLiberty · 14/04/2021 01:12

What cunt rang that fucking bell and woke the whole street? Angry

ilovesooty · 14/04/2021 02:27

No one ‘forces’ it on anyone. Why are you so wet? As for ‘children might see it’, take responsibility for your own child and stop palming them off with a phone to play with. Get a grip and a life, in that order.

@SweetChickadee

ooh I love a good swear - it's great we are allowed to on MN
There is an irony that many people use acronmyms on Mumsnet (often, I don't even know), yet swearing (which does offend some individuals) does not seem to be acronymed.

  1. I didn't notice the date.
  2. Date is irrelevant, because it is still happening in the present.
  3. I don't know a post contains swearing until AFTER I open it, so I'm supposed to avoid opening any posts because my kid is in the room?
  4. My point also emphasises that there still exist a great many people who are offended by swearing. A little empathy for them costs nothing. Not swearing does you no harm. Its just common courtesy and respect for others. Manners, like not spitting on someone's front door.
  5. Many cultures (including in Britain) are offended by swearing. Are these cultures to be bullied out of Mumsnet?
