Teenage girls and those stupid fucking photos give me the rage

witchofzog · 28/06/2016 23:24

I have stepdaughters and as a result have them and a few of their friends (who added me) on fb. They are constantly taking selfies of themselves either on their own or in groups with their hands over their faces so all you can see is one eye or a bit of skin. Either that it it's photos taken in the mirror with a flash so all you can see is their shoes or a shoulder. And there are hundreds of them.

It gives me a totally irrational rage. What is the fucking point? There are going to be a whole generation of girls who will have next to no photos of themselves at this age. I really don't get it. Beautiful girls who won't show their faces. Just why?

I think I need to hide most of these posts on FB before I give myself a hernia Confused HmmAngry

I think when I was young (I'm 50) there were far more tribes of teenagers. So now they all have straight hair but there no other groups that have similar styles. In the 80s there were lots of curly perm type girls and soul boys. But then there were goths, heavy metal fans, mod revivalists and there were the jumble sale/charity shop/homemade clothes alternative music group who had pretty varied hair that they were always cutting it short then growing out. So they may have dressed similarly within a group - often related to music, but there was variety overall. It seems very homogeneous now.

supersoftcuddlytoys · 30/06/2016 12:21

I agree reup it does. I have 2 teenage DD's and I get to hear of lot of contemporary music. I find it rather bland I must say. I'd welcome a bit of anger, aggression, energy, experimentation. Maybe it's just their taste?

SoupDragon · 30/06/2016 12:41

I am eternally grateful I did not have to live my teen years with social media and extremely portable digital cameras :o

Rachel0Greep · 30/06/2016 15:28

Same here. I never look great in photos anyway, but the thought of me being captured forever online, in my teenage glory, no thanks.

Am friends with various nieces and nephews on Facebook, some early teens, some older. They, and their pals, are all flipping gorgeous, seriously!

TheRoadToRuin · 30/06/2016 17:23

In a way I wish I did have some pictures of my teenage friends. In the 70s the boys had longer hair than the girls. Make up consisted of blusher and eyeliner.
I know a few teenage girls and have noticed a strange silvery grey tinge to the trowelled on make up. Is that a thing?

BayLeaves · 30/06/2016 17:28

TheRoadToRuin Sounds like highlighter. As well as sharpie eyebrows there is a trend for lots of contouring and highlighting...

Icrackedup · 30/06/2016 17:35

That's highlighter, TheRoadToRuin.

iloveeverykindofcat · 30/06/2016 17:49

Thanks for providing the term 'sharpie eyebrows' for the look I have been seeing on the undergrads this term. Excellent description. They're almost....rectangular. Have to school myself not to stare/squint from lecture podium.

Of course we all did terrible things to our faces. I bleached the front of my very dark hair and turned it orange when I was 14 or so. But you'd hope by college they'd be coming out of it.

Also 'on fleek'. On fleek drives me irrationally insane in a way no other coinage approaches.

Overshoulderbolderholder · 30/06/2016 17:52

Don't be their face book friend ..

MrsDmitriTippensKrushnic · 30/06/2016 17:53

I am eternally grateful that DD and her friends have decided they don't like Facebook (they constantly chat via whatsapp instead We so far seem to be avoiding the whole selfie thing although it's early days yet - let's see what changes years 8 and 9 bring. IIRC that's the time the whole teenage sheep thing kicks in.

mumoseven · 30/06/2016 17:55

Why don't they smile? It all looks so grim. Even celebs do the dead eyed duck/fish

x2boys · 30/06/2016 17:56

How do they so sharpie eyebrows do they just plyck them and draw them back on ?My junior 4 teacher did this in 1984 and it wasent a good luck thenGrin

A 14 year old girl of my acquaintance renders herself almost unrecognisable with Facetune in all her recent selfies. She went a bit overboard in the latest one and made one eye bigger than the other. She's a gorgeous girl with a wonderful nature. It makes me sad that she doesn't think she's beautiful enough as she is :(

cricketqueen · 30/06/2016 18:21

I hate all of these selfies. I have a teen niece and cousins. All the pouting and posing. The 'tagged my mains' what does that even mean?? Followed by the endless comments of:
My bf gorgeous
Says you babe
Not as much as you hun..... etc etc etc.
I just hope they will look back in 10 years time and despair at themselves like I do now haha.

PortiaCastis · 30/06/2016 18:24

My 17 year old is already despairing over her facebrag posts so she has set about deleting the pics. Doesn't stop her having sharpiebrows though

AndNowItsSeven · 30/06/2016 18:27

Bae= before anyone else

CombineBananaFister · 30/06/2016 18:44

I wouldn't have them as friends on FB tbh, I won't have my nieces and nephews as I don't need to be seeing what they're getting upto and vice-versa.
Am also glad there was no social media when I was making all my teenage mistakes- can just imagine the drinking cider down the park selfies [blush} IT's all very selfaware now, which makes them both savvy but also dull. I only ever see retouched or polished versions of everyone and their children, no snailtrail noses or mad bedhair and it makes me a bit sad.

WeMustGetOffTheMountain · 30/06/2016 19:02

It's just another teenaged phase. I'm sure we all had similar things our parents and relatives rolled their eyes at. I used to have blue hair and 2 inches of eyeliner, holding a camera right above my head to get the most "emo" pose possible. I bet I looked equally as stupid. There have been many crazes throughout the years, it just so happens now they have social media as a platform to share it. And to those telling miles Cyprus to grow up for sticking her tongue out... For goodness sake don't be so vile. She can stick her tongue out if she likes.

AgentPineapple · 30/06/2016 19:04

It's a self esteem thing, constant reassurance that they look good because they get like etc
