I don't watch it - and I watch loads of crap on TV - willingly.

I don't like the sound of it at all. Never watched it, but it just sounds hideously grim.

You are not alone :)

I actually do like GOT and have watched since the first season but i must admit i record it on sky and fast forward some of the really gory bits. Its a enjoyable show but some of it can be a bit much.

Bertrand

I think that poster meant the violence of the eras GoT has borrowed from.

I love it. I prefer the books but still like the TV show. I do find the violence horrific and there are some bits I just can't watch and have to look away. Despite those bits I still think it's a great TV show.

YABU.

I'm the person who "mans" the throne threads over in Telly Addicts.

Historical accuracy comments are referring to the fact that it's based on true stuff from the Plantagenet-York-Tudor era of history. Mad Kings. Usurpers. Wars. Curses. Illegitmate heirs. Incest. Child deaths. It's all there.

Yes the mistreatment of women is horrific. But what exactly do you think it was like for women between 13-1600 and beyond. Wasn't exactly a barrel of laughs.

They only outlawed marital rape in THIS country about 20 years ago.

In this season particularly the tide has turned and a number of women are "doing it for themselves" and have become totally bad ass. But you wouldn't know that if you gave up.

It's not historically accurate but it does draw refernces from history the war of the roses in particular, the trial of anne boleyn, probably loads I can't think of right now; and it demosntrates the misogynistic treatment of women rather than necessarily being misogynistic. As others have said this last episode was very heavy on strong women characters - almost to the point of being a joke. I am guessing they are drawing on the likes of Boudica and Queen Elizabeth 1 as the basis of this.

I do think some of it is a bit unnecessary and I was quite relieved surprised when it became popular.

If our measure for 'historically accurate' is 'some of the stuff in it is loosely comparable to some things that actually happened, though those things are cherry-picked from hundreds of years of history and there are large swathes of the story (dragons, zombies, magical tree people) that are definitely not drawn from any era of human history', then can someone please name a TV show that is not 'historically accurate'?

BertrandRussell · 28/06/2016 00:29

The reason that it's not historically accurate is that it is set in a fantasy world. It's not a historical drama!
I remember when men used to say they bought Playboy for the insightful journalism.....

It brings the historical figures the characters are based on to life and explores all kinds of real historical events in a dramatised ficticous setting.

People enjoy gory history

The thing is though, a lot of history is written from a very male perspective, women were colateral damage of power struggles and wars, but all that is often whitewashed in a lot of more traditional dramatisations of history, George RR Martin shows the real cost of war rather than just the villans and heros, and that includes violence towards women.

It's not "losely comparable", it is directly drawn from real events, characters and mythology. They're just patchworked together in an un historically accurate way

Like the recent Dickensian on BBC, was based on Dickens characters and events, but wove them all together to explore the characters and events

The word you are looking for is "derivative"

It's escapism! I'm a woman and I love the violence Grin I hate it in real life. It's fantasy. In fantasyland I would love a direwolf but in real life it wouldn't fit in my one bed flat.

Love it. Agree that the violence can be somewhat disturbing and there are times when my stomach turns when I know what's coming. I'm still hooked though.
The first few sets in the series, yes, it was all tits, ass and sex but it's calmed down and I think the show is much better for it if that's even possible

Book wise what I've found significant and interesting was who "gets to have a POV"

POV chapters are invariably from those without power, because they are women, servants, bastards, children or in Tyrion's case, disabled. Or a combination thereof.

(With a few exceptions)

For example it's noticeable that not one King up to this point in book or show, had a POV chapter.

sadly I also tried it and had to stop watching just a few mins into ep 1. I really cant abide protracted violence on screen. Yet I love all the copshows :)

I watched the first episode after hearing everyone rave about it. I thought it was disgusting actually. Incest, child murder, lots of violence and an implied rape. Not for me.

Report
longdiling · 28/06/2016 06:17

It didn't feel faithful enough to the books for me either. Whenever I tried watching it I just ended up shaking my head and going 'but that never happened in the book!'. I find it difficult to enjoy something in its own right once I've read it first.

IMO the books are better, more food, less sex ;-)

Yeah it's not for the faint of heart.

Myself, partner and father have a GoT
Night weekly during the new seasons. We love it! All of the storylines too.

After DD goes to bed.

It is just so dull and predictable.

The violence and sex is necessary because it is so boring otherwise.

I have up halfway through season 2. I don't have time for that shit.

BrandNewAndImproved · 28/06/2016 06:53

YABU as you state the violence is the reason you dislike it but yet watch walking dead.

Walking dead is a blood bath and more violent then GOT.

Me and dh love it. But I do end up covering my eyes a lot of the time. The first season had far more sex than the rest of them. I am only up to season four so haven't seen the battle of the bastards.

I can totally see how it some people wouldn't like it.
