turned away from beauticians because I had my baby with me

I have just been turned away from a beauty salon because 'we don't allow children '. Not only do I not have childcare but my baby is so exclusively breast fed. I feel so upset, humiliated and angry. Is this a commonly accepted practice?!

I used to work in a salon for a short time and there are instruments and chemicals that are very dangerous for children and babies so they had a complete ban on under 12s for their only safety. I also think their insurance didnt cover children under 12 on their premises. They were lovely and very apologic to anyone who hadnt phoned ahead or checked their website and offered a mobile service. Never heard anyone complain so i surpose its how you deal with it. The receptionist was very good explaining i think and very good personal skills. Try a mobile one next time op.

expatinscotland · 27/06/2016 16:09

Damn! I thought it was going to be because you have lice.

sizeofalentil · 27/06/2016 16:12

Salons tend to be quite small with a few rooms. Imagine if you were there for a massage and could hear a crying baby the entire time?

Or if you were getting your nails done and they had to keep stopping and starting because you were fiddling with the baby and smudging the polish?

Also… I though this was going to say you were turned away for being too hairy. Not sure why. Maybe because that's one of my biggest fears…

JessicaRabbit3 · 27/06/2016 16:13

Unfortunately for you op you learnt the hard way that there's some places where children can't go this being one of them. Are you a first time mum? Your emotions sound really high.

ineedwine99 · 27/06/2016 16:14

I don't know anything about salon policies but as someone mentioned, maybe a mobile therapist might be best, you get to be in the comfort of your own home as well

longdiling · 27/06/2016 16:15

As others have said, it kind of does make a difference what you're having done. I went to a tesco brow bar this morning, that could be an option. I suppose they can't ban kids from a particular area of the store can they?!

Quite normal. How would you cope with a screaming baby if you were in the middle of a manicure or facial? Your mention of breastfeeding suggests that you expected the baby to need a feed while you were there - how would that have worked around your waxing? What about other customers who are looking forward to having a bit of R&R and who instead of listening to whale music are listening to a crying baby? Many of them have probably escaped to the salon to avoid just that.

Penfold007 · 27/06/2016 16:22

Standard practice and good risk assessment. I'm a supporter of breastfeeding but draw the line at feeding in dirty or dangerous places such as in the toilet or a beauty salon full of chemicals.

It wouldn't occur to me to take a baby there. It's not appropriate. Fumes would be bad for the baby and if the baby cried it's disruptive to the customers.

I had to wait for my Dh to take a day off work and do it then. It will only get harder as the baby gets bigger and becomes a toddler, so maybe think about making friends with other mums or look for a mobile beauty salon?

whiteDragon · 27/06/2016 16:27

At least you have the option here of mobile beautician.

I had this with my GP with smear tests - even with a young baby as it was appropriate Hmm. Waited till youngest started school - then it was impossible to fit in in the hours I wasn't with children Angry.

All the sex health clinic - can't think of name - in that area only dealt with you if you were under 25 - didn't apply to me and I know they enforced as knew a few younger mothers they got snippy with wanting coils despite them being in their age bracket.

Then at end of any GP visit for other things I'd get reminded I was over due and often lectured Hmm.

whiteDragon · 27/06/2016 16:29

Though like other here when bf, which as I had them close and bf longer than 12 month went on years, never occurred to me to take them to a beauticians.

Mind you never looked my best those years.

whiteDragon · 27/06/2016 16:30

wasn't appropriate - something ate my n't there.

SuperFlyHigh · 27/06/2016 16:32

what with all the chemicals flying around (nails etc) I'm not surprised you couldn't take a baby in.

also a baby who may or may not cry/be sick etc isn't exactly conducive to the relaxing environment of a beauty salon.

who would hold the baby whilst you had your treatment? they are not unpaid childminders!

I wouldn't take baby into the salon as it's noisy, full of fumes,

Pissed myself laughing at this Itsybitsy or am I reading it wrong maybe (head tilt)

AdultingIsNotWhatIExpected · 27/06/2016 16:39

How on earth is this in any way comparible to smear tests?

Nobody ever died from missing a brow tint!

whiteDragon · 27/06/2016 16:43

How on earth is this in any way comparible to smear tests?/

I couldn't get one done because I had the baby with me and no childcare options.

Something so important and no adjustment was made so really don't think the OP is going to get anywhere - that was the point I was making Hmm

Op here has many other options.

Scarydinosaurs · 27/06/2016 16:47

Because if you were having a pedicure, you could hold your baby- if you were having a wax, who was going to look after your baby?

Their insurance may not cover having children unsupervised in the salon.

And it's a beauty shop- many people see that as a child free place they go to for a break away from children.

MovingOnUpMovingOnOut · 27/06/2016 16:50

I also think it depends what you were having done. I've had my eyebrows threaded with the baby in the buggy next to me at a brow bar, had a haircut with my 5mo on my lap/breastfeeding (she was supposed to be asleep but woke up) and had my nails done with DS asleep in the buggy. Just ordinary pedicure/manicure and paint.

So until we know what you were going in for then I can't say if you were reasonable or not.

MovingOnUpMovingOnOut · 27/06/2016 16:52

I also had smear tests with babies in buggies/toddler at the head end and a blanket.

How was it humiliating?

pristinechristine · 27/06/2016 16:57

Those places stink! Why on earth would you want your baby breathing in those chemicals?

Get childcare or just do your nails yourself
