turned away from beauticians because I had my baby with me

I have just been turned away from a beauty salon because 'we don't allow children '. Not only do I not have childcare but my baby is so exclusively breast fed. I feel so upset, humiliated and angry. Is this a commonly accepted practice?!

I walked past a nail salon yesterday and saw a woman having her nails done with a baby in a travel system and it made me think of this thread Grin

Beauty therapists/ hairdressers aren't CRB checked. It's no different to expecting a random person off-the-street to child-mind.

NHS staff have rigorous criminal background checks to facilitate working with children. Imagine a GP. who couldn't provide medical services to children. Joe Blogg's beauty salon doesn't need any because generally they wouldn't be providing any services to children.

I took 4yo dd with me to get my hair cut on Monday. ..never occurred to me it could be a problem! They cut kids hair there so must be insured. She had a magazine and sat there watching the haircut and occasionally standing up to look at herself in the big mirror. No one minded, no one died.

PrinceHans it is very different if a salon says it cuts kids hair and is presumably insured for it and is 'family friendly'.

If they don't cut kids hair (which they're entitled to do so) they shouldn't feel they have to allow kids in or hold babies or childmind for the parent.

I spoke to a friend of mine ages ago about kids and getting their hair cut in her salon (she's a friend as well as a hairdresser) - she said she doesn't mind kids coming in to get their hair cut with their parents and most are well behaved. I didn't ask her anything else about it. In her salon though it's a bit different as the co-owner of the salon also has a dog (terrier type) which is often in a basket in full view of clients - I think she'd also expect the child and dog to interact properly etc. The dog normally just lies there though and toddles around occasionally.

I think you're getting a rough time here OP.

I recently ran into the lady who used to do my nails and she asked me why I hadn't been in. I said it was difficult to find time with a little one and she said "bring her in, we love babies". I wouldn't take her in because she's at the age of being into everything and with wet nails it'd be a nightmare to look after her BUT there is an area of ambiguity here.

Just put it down to experience, you know for next time.

I've taken my kids to the beauticians. I wouldn't have taken the 2 of them in but did take them in when they were old enough to just sit. I was only having my eyelashes dyed anyway and the beautician was happy for the child to sit on a chair next to me and hold my hand and "look after mummy".
I wouldn't have taken an inquisitive toddler. I probably wouldn't have taken a baby as you have to lie/sit still relaxed whilst dye on which would be difficult if the baby started wailing.
