Yes I have voted, but I am sick and tired of the unrest, I'm aware there has been a lot of discontent for a long time but its now feeling toxic and I want it to be over one way or the other.

The whole thing is a mess and both sides are disgusting. In this thread, people have said "I don't know a single person who wants to leave, perhaps because I only mix with similar minded intelligent people" and "I already feel great resentment towards the out voters who have allowed themselves to be so easily misled" as if because their opinion is Remain, that is the correct opinion and anyone voting Leave is WRONG. And yet the Leave side are the close-minded bigots or whatever else you want to label them as?

I'm still undecided regarding the vote (yeah, I know) but the Remainers go on and on about these horrible racists from the Leave side, claiming their intellectual and moral superiority, not bothering to factor in the many other reasons people are voting to leave, and totally ignoring the immigrants that also want to leave.

I don't believe there is a clear-cut correct decision but I can't wait for all this nonsense to blow over, either way. And to the people saying they will be angry with relatives/friends - bear in mind they are doing what they genuinely believe is best. Staying or leaving is not going to fix all of our country's problems and just because YOU believe something is best, doesn't mean you are ultimately right. Don't let a political decision which we (as individuals) have very little control over have a huge impact on your relationships. Or do, it's your choice.

im feeling uncomfortable as hell i just had an email telling me to vote remain for the memory of the MP who died dont let her down it was sick as hell talk about your low blows let the woman RIP dont use her to push your political agenda

Kitsa · 23/06/2016 15:35

Thanks Wynona Jassy and shove. Dizzy that's a nice thought about the holidays. It is beautiful where we're going, remote, but lovely, and I'm trying to focus on that side of things. Roses I guess that's not surprising about the temp staff, sucks for them really, I have worked in call centres and been shouted/stressed at too, not nice! (not that I shouted but I bet people do!)

green18 · 23/06/2016 15:35

I can at least appreciate that there can be liberal, tolerant and fair ideals in the Leave camp!

How noble of you Hmm of course there are!

YourPerception · 23/06/2016 15:36

There is an incident in Germany and this drama no wonder there is so much unease.

green18 · 23/06/2016 15:38

user
Thankyou, my sentiments entirely. Of the people i know voting to leave, several are not British. One of the main campaigners for Leave is Gisela Stewart, a German. Come on, open your eyes, immigration doesn't even factor in my vote as leaving will probably involve some kind of free movement deal anyway.

SouperSal · 23/06/2016 15:39

The result of this referendum isn't legally binding. Leave can win and the govt can decide to stay. Not worth the angst really.

Kitsa · 23/06/2016 15:41

abbs it was her political agenda too, though.

AdultingIsNotWhatIExpected · 23/06/2016 15:41

cozietoesie · 23/06/2016 15:41

All the best to your mother, shove.

AdultingIsNotWhatIExpected · 23/06/2016 15:42

green would you care to explain what your problem is with my post?

OrangesandLemonsNow · 23/06/2016 15:43

im feeling uncomfortable as hell i just had an email telling me to vote remain for the memory of the MP who died dont let her down it was sick as hell talk about your low blows let the woman RIP dont use her to push your political agenda

That is disgusting. I'don't be complaining of I was you

teacherwith2kids · 23/06/2016 15:44

I too am uneasy - too many nasty things said on both sides, and some less pleasant sides of friends and acquaintances (on both sides) revealed.

I find the assumption by those campaigning that the rest of us are stupid absolutely enraging.

i find the lack of challenge that assertions made by campaigners in the media have been subjected to by interviewers dispiriting.

I have found the belief that somehow we will all return to an imaginary pre-1973 la la land if we vote leave, with jobs for everyone and funding for everything that we want, distressing.

Equally I feel that the ignorance from politicians in the remain campaign of what really affects and afflicts normal people day to day has been appalling.

Hassled · 23/06/2016 15:46

I have this horrible knot of anxiety about it all. I want us to Remain, but however it pans out I'm worried about how the other side, whichever it is, reacts. I suppose if nothing else this election has made people have an opinion and engage with political debate in a way we haven't seen in a long time (at least outside of Scotland). But the ramifications worry me enormously - and much more so if we Leave.

LittleLionMansMummy · 23/06/2016 15:48

Remainers go on and on about these horrible racists from the Leave side, claiming their intellectual and moral superiority, not bothering to factor in the many other reasons people are voting to leave

Unfortunately 'leave' haven't been quite so eloquent in putting forward these many other reasons, without resorting to tactics that draw attention to their more fascist extremes. The moment Farage released his fascist poster leave lost the right to claim there was a bigger picture. Much of Leave's campaign has focused on immigration. I can totally understand that it's a valid concern for many. Most leavers are not racist, i agree. But I bet you anything most racists are leavers. If taking a stand against this distasteful element of Leave is considered intellectually and morally superior, then I'm quite content with that label.

Sallystyle · 23/06/2016 15:49

To lighten things up a bit... a conversation with my 7 year old daughter

DD- Mum, did you vote stay or leave?
Me- I voted to stay, so did your dad
DD- Thank you mum, I'm so happy
Me- Why?
DD- I don't want to move all the way to America
Me- What??

DD- If we leave we would have to move across the world and I like it here
Me- What made you think that?
DD- Sigh mum, how do you think we can live here if we aren't a part of Europe?

Grin

Apparently she learnt more about it today at school Hmm

LittleLionMansMummy · 23/06/2016 15:54

Children have a wonderfully innocent way of seeing things. My 5yo is full of questions but there's no way I could explain to him what this is all about. I tried to explain the general election to him, which was easier, but he's also heard our views of Farage which resulted in him attending a polling station with us and telling everyone in the queue that they 'weren't allowed' to vote UKIP Blush

SuperMumNot · 23/06/2016 15:55

I also feel anxious today because this is such a very important decision and I think many people are irrationally voting based on spurious and single issues and poor information.

That said I feel pretty sure that Remain will win, with a bigger % than was first imagined. I say this for a number of reasons, some of which is based on work I've done in the past in market and social research:

  • everyone is getting hyped up by social media which tends to be dominated by the folk who are angry and seeking change (e.g. Labour party in the last election) so it tends to over-estimate the 'change vote'. People who are more conservative (small 'c') and happy with the status quo don't feel the need to speak out/ justify it so much. This is why review sites are often dominated by the angry and unhappy - if you're satisfied with something your first thought isn't 'I must go and post about that somewhere'!
  • there's a significant 'shy intelligentsia' in the UK who won't engage openly with the campaign and polls, but will turn out to vote, and they are significantly pro- Remain.
  • The 'don't knows' are more likely to convert to Remain than Leave in the final stages - it's the 'better the devil you know' phenomenon - if they're still not sure then Remain is the easier, less stressful, status quo option...

Although there haven't been official national exit polls published, there are plenty of private polls being undertaken and I think the fact that the bookies are now showing Remain as the strong favourite to win suggests to me that all the private polls are predicting this too (with private pollsters taking a punt on their results?)

CodewordRochambeau · 23/06/2016 15:57

I'm worried. I am worried about the people who won't talk about voting Leave but will do it, just like the shy Tories of the last GE.

Kitsa · 23/06/2016 16:02

U2has aww!

green18 · 23/06/2016 16:03

adult
My problem was that you conceded that there might be some vote leavers out there that might just be liberal and tolerant. Of course there are, don't believe what the media spins. My grandparents are immigrants, I have 2 aunties that live on the continent and have children there. I love Europe! I still voted leave because I value independence.

AdultingIsNotWhatIExpected · 23/06/2016 16:05

okay green so you're just determined to argue with me even though I agree with you, I guess this is what the atmosphere of this referendum has done to people

Capricorn76 · 23/06/2016 16:09

A couple of people I know who haven't bothered voting for years are voting 'Out' today. It really pisses me off that they never bothered to vote so surrendered their right to influence anything but are now blaming the EU for things that our own government have done. When you ask them how the EU has negatively affected them on a personal level they can't answer.

green18 · 23/06/2016 16:10

No adult I'm not. But your post together with others sarcastically saying that anyone who votes leave is less intelligent or racist, I find really offensive.

timetobackout · 23/06/2016 16:10

Whoever wins will find as time goes on that their victory will not live up to their hopes
