To think I shouldn't pay for replacement GHD hair straighteners

I'm not sure if I'm being unreasonable here.

My wife has a pair of 5 year old God hair straighteners. They have an intermittent wiring fault that means they are very much hit and miss in their operation.

She'd used them last night and left them plugged in and balanced precariously on the mantle piece with the wire dangling down. As I walked into the lounge this morning I got my foot caught around the trailing wire (nearly going flying in the process) and pulled the straighteners off the mantelpiece and onto the stone floor below.

I've had a series of angry texts demanding that I buy her a new pair of ghd straighteners at a cost of £100 plus. (We have separate finances)

I think she's being unreasonable. Because

A) They were a knackered pair of straighteners on their last legs that she would have needed to replace anyway in the next few months.

B) left in such a stupid place they were bound to get damaged and cause an accident in the process.

I've offered £30 towards the cost of a replacement, but she is adamant I should pay the full cost of a new pair.

AIBU?

If I broke something belonging to a partner I loved, I'd replace them with the best thing that I could afford to.

My DH stood on mine when I left them on the floor Sadhe offered to buy me a new pair straight away Smilehe was a bit Shockwhen I told him how much but he coughed up anyway Grinmake her happy, get to the shops Smile

Your married right? Yet discussing/arguing over text? What happened to actually talking it through together? Perhaps you can then see her emotions/feelings and gauge an appropriate response? There's no right/wrong here, just winners and losers and a marriage/relationship can't flourish like that.

"Make her happy and get to the shops!?"

She earns more than him, yet burns through her money from all accounts within 2 weeks or so of payday.

Has herself a holiday with her sister that her husband cannot afford to go on (although by his own admission he was not that fussed anyway)

He cannot afford meals out or days out, and the wife will deign to come to low cost things with him, but anything more extravagant will go with her family (as opposed to maybe taking her husband and stumping up the cost for once)

And despite him earning less, they still split in half rent, bills and food. So she has more disposable income then he does, yet burns through it, and is expecting him to stump up £100 to replace a knackered worn out set of hair straighteners that she left in a ridiculous place, with the wire crossing the doorway......the only way that could have been more ridiculous is if she had "accidentally" split some hair gel right in the doorway to really ensure maximum trippage and slippage.

Yet he should "make her happy and get to the shops"

OP, by all means get yourself to a shop but ruddy well buy yourself something.

MidniteScribbler · 20/06/2016 00:09

Why do you need more than one straightener? Can't you only use one at a time anyway?

Tell her to take you to the small claims court.

TheCrumpettyTree · 20/06/2016 08:31

Over £100 for hair straighteners?! 😳 Eff that! My husband wouldn't even let me have anything that expensive just for my hair in the first place

Your husband wouldn't let you? Wtf? Hmm

BarbaraofSeville · 20/06/2016 09:26

Using and leaving faulty straighteners lying around, you're lucky that the house hasn't burnt down. SWBU to not unplug them and put them somewhere safe - and get a heatproof mat.

You need to talk to each other about these things, couples having arguments by text is just weird.

If she is a regular user of straighteners and there are better ones around now, maybe it is a good excuse for her to buy herself some new ones? Or you buy them for her birthday if that's within the normal sort of present price range?

worrierandwine · 20/06/2016 11:51

It was accidental on your part and could have been prevented if they had been put away. GHD's are bloody expensive, I've never owned a pair as the friends I do know of having them always seem to break so I usually get some other decent ones on offer from Boots, my current ones are Babyliss Salon professional and should have been £100 but were on offer at £60 ish I think.
YANBU at all, I think the only fair thing here is if she buys some new ones herself or you go halves with her if they absolutely have to be GHD. I personally don't get the big deal with them, maybe back in the day when straighteners first became popular they probably were the best but not any more, there are so many alternative, better value and more reliable ones on the market.

MitzyLeFrouf · 20/06/2016 12:03

My GHDs are 14 years old and still going strong

Jaxhog · 20/06/2016 12:13

Texts? More at work here methinks.

In the interests of marital harmony I'd buy her a new set anyway. They may have been old and left in a bad place, but you did break them. Chances are, if she's had them for 5 years and continues to use them with an intermittent fault, she can't afford to replace them herself. If you can, you should.

LagunaBubbles · 20/06/2016 12:22

How do you know if your GHDs are fake? My DH bought me a set for Christmas a few years ago, wouldn't surprise me if he got them in a dodgy market or something.

KittensandKnitting · 20/06/2016 12:31

Love kissmyarse response....

She left them in a stupid and dangerous place.

Accidents happen they got broken, couples argue over the most stupid of things especially first thing in the morning.

I'd die without mine, DP would replace them same as I would if I broke something of is (not an impossible scenario as he leaves stuff everywhere!) but only if I could afford it and visa a versa.

I would love to know who replaced them :)

bloodyteenagers · 20/06/2016 15:13

Laguna, you go onto the ghd website and enter the hologram and date code.

Jaxhog - why would there be anything odd with text. She was in bed sleeping when he tripped over the hazard. She woke up and sent him a text because he was at work. I

Mycraneisfixed · 20/06/2016 15:39

Offer to pay half.
