to NOT see what is wrong with the UKIP poster?

It shows a crowd of refugees trekking across country and has the strapline 'The EU has failed us all'

I think it's a really good point.

FFS the EU has failed these poor people , being turned away from one country to another.

Why hasn't this useless organisation, of some of the richest countries in the world managed to arrange its borders so that those poor refugees fleeing from war-torn homes where they fear for their lives everyday are allowed to exercise their human right to apply for asylum?

Why haven't the leaders of the EU arranged that those people are treated with humanity and decency and not drown everyday?

I agree with Farage that we should be able to control our borders. If we did, perhaps we could prioritise immigration to offer sanctuary to refugees like Germany has done.

And I agree that the EU is an ineffective and undemocratic organisation. If our Parliament was in control of immigration perhaps we could effectively pressurise our MPs to act and allow refugees into the UK in meaningful numbers.

Me too

SilverBirchWithout · 17/06/2016 22:22

The day I no longer get angry with people manipulating others, spreading fear, falsehoods and plying racist and xenophobic views, will be the day of my last breath.

gonetoseeamanaboutadog · 17/06/2016 22:36

I think you need to divide the two issues up, though OP.

The EU has arguably failed both Europeans and refugees in its handling of the refugee crisis. If you cared deeply about refugees, I suppose you could just about say that this might be a reason to get out of the EU and help without direction. This is not what UKIP is proposing though, and not why they're making the argument.

I see the point you're making but it doesn't line up with the poster.

gonetoseeamanaboutadog · 17/06/2016 22:38

I have to agree with crumpet though OP - it was bad form to start this thread when ref. campaigning and debate is suspended as a mark of respect to Jo Cox, especially given the circumstances of her death and her views on this specific poster.

badtime · 18/06/2016 00:04

I note that the OP, despite being repeatedly asked, hasn't said whether she thinks the pro-refugee interpretation of the poster she has cobbled together explained here is the actual message this poster was supposed to convey.

Destinysdaughter · 18/06/2016 00:28

Just this OP

First they came for the Communists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Communist
Then they came for the Socialists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Socialist
Then they came for the trade unionists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a trade unionist
Then they came for the Jews
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Jew
Then they came for me
And there was no one left
To speak out for me

mygorgeousmilo · 18/06/2016 06:48

You know full well that isn't the message! It could be, but it isn't.

Reposting from another thread with less traffic where beakyminder posted 2 informative links:

...............
For anyone unfamiliar, Hopenothate.org.uk is one of the 3 charities that are part of Jo Cox's donation fund.

www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2016/06/17/jo-coxs-friends-and-family-set-up-charity-fund-in-her-memory/

They are a charity that works to provide a positive antidote to hatred in politics. I'd strongly recommend anyone check their website out...in general; for the Farage article, and for the article about Jo Cox's life, beliefs and what she working so hard to change.

It only takes a minute or so to read so I really hope as many people as possible can find the time to do that. Thank you very much.

yummycake123 · 18/06/2016 07:29

Come on OP, that's not the message of the poster... This is scaremongering suggesting that the EU has let in too many migrants that eventually will want to come to the UK.

Even when questioned about it, Farage is suspicious that people in this pic (refugees crossing the Croatia-Slovenia border in 2015) are mainly young males and links them to security threats and terrorism. He questions their refugee status.

www.theguardian.com/politics/2016/jun/16/nigel-farage-defends-ukip-breaking-point-poster-queue-of-migrants

This is clearly anti-immigration propaganda, not a call to help refugees!

nellodee · 18/06/2016 08:40

Doom monger alert.

I think that mass migration, along with the global warming that will cause it, is going to be the big story of this century and that we have not seen anything yet. If we don't act on climate change, those lines of migrants are going to become a lot, lot longer and the connections with the dark days of the twentieth century will become a lot, lot stronger as the poorest parts of our planet become even more inhospitable than they are today. To reduce immigration and avoid potential global scale conflict, we should be green and stay in the EU.

nearlyhellokitty · 18/06/2016 09:10

Beginning to wonder whether this is a reverse

Creampastry · 18/06/2016 09:11

There's little point in us being green when mist of the plane isn't.... From Ukraine to China. Albania to Greece, the environment is not an issue.

The EU has a mandatory environmental programme for businesses to become greener BUT guess which country is the only country to enforce this programme - the UK. When it was launched, everyone stuck two fingers up at this costly programme but we follow the rules. The eu is corrupt. Some of the countries in the right are corrupt. Countries wanting to join are even more corrupt. It's a bleak future in the eu.
