to NOT see what is wrong with the UKIP poster?

It shows a crowd of refugees trekking across country and has the strapline 'The EU has failed us all'

I think it's a really good point.

FFS the EU has failed these poor people , being turned away from one country to another.

Why hasn't this useless organisation, of some of the richest countries in the world managed to arrange its borders so that those poor refugees fleeing from war-torn homes where they fear for their lives everyday are allowed to exercise their human right to apply for asylum?

Why haven't the leaders of the EU arranged that those people are treated with humanity and decency and not drown everyday?

I agree with Farage that we should be able to control our borders. If we did, perhaps we could prioritise immigration to offer sanctuary to refugees like Germany has done.

And I agree that the EU is an ineffective and undemocratic organisation. If our Parliament was in control of immigration perhaps we could effectively pressurise our MPs to act and allow refugees into the UK in meaningful numbers.

Furthermore, this humanitarian crisis is one the UK has had a hand in creating.Don't you think we therefore have a moral responsibility towards the huge amount of people who have been displaced as a result of this conflict that has decimated people's lives?

drummersmum · 17/06/2016 19:49

Farage's youth...

PacificDogwod · 17/06/2016 19:51

drummersmum, how confident are you that that letter is genuine?

JeepersMcoy · 17/06/2016 19:52

I am so confused by this whole thread. What the op appears to be saying is that the EU has failed refugees by not forcing it's members, including the UK to take more migrants in. So they are reading this poster for the leave campaign as actually saying we should leave europe because the UK has been allowed to make its own decisions on how many refugees to take in rather than having it decided for us by Europe.

I sort of feel like I have fallen into some sort of parallel universe Confused

PacificDogwod · 17/06/2016 19:52

Yes, mental gymnastics are required for that one, Jeepers Grin

ladyjadey · 17/06/2016 20:02

Someone help us all. I can't believe anyone is that blinkered.

OP, I suggest you go and spend a few hours reading what's been going on for the last century or so.

Stop the world, I want to get off.

thisisafakename · 17/06/2016 20:09

PacificDogwod, that letter was obtained by channel 4 news as part of an investigation. i am pretty sure it is genuine as otherwise Farage would have a very strong case for libel and slander.

badtime · 17/06/2016 20:11

OP, the thing you are failing to take into consideration is that when the poster says 'The EU has failed us all', the 'us' it's referring to is the people of the UK (because that is who will be voting).

The people shown in the image are not the people of the UK. They are not 'us'. Therefore, they must be 'them'.

The poster is divisive, and racist (having obscured the only noticable white face in the original image with text!), and yes, very similar to images from Nazi propaganda.

HeartsofOak · 17/06/2016 20:16

If you could just put your Daily Fail thinking to one side for the moment...

What I'm trying to say is

The EU tried to impose a quota, and failed. Most countries, particularly the ones actually with refugees directly trying to claim asylum, ignored the EU directive and put up barriers to keep the refugees out.

The EU failed on a very important trial of its unification, one where it really matters to individual human beings. It's failed us all (I hope all) because I think most decent people would want to see people in such desperate situations treated kindly and with humanity. Not left to drown, be tear gassed and forced to march across countries with their children.

And because the EU is so remote from us and unaccountable to us there's not a democratic means of voicing ones opposition.

OP posts:
badtime · 17/06/2016 20:19

But do you honestly think that is what the poster is supposed to convey?

LurcioAgain · 17/06/2016 20:21

I see I am not the only one to reckon the OP knows damn fine exactly what is so offensively racist about the poster and is just engaging in a spree of deliberate goady fuckery.

Snowcoveredthoughtcage · 17/06/2016 20:22

Of course it's racist. It's a fucking disgrace. Completely disingenuous to pretend otherwise.

thisisafakename · 17/06/2016 20:22

Well, apparently not, as the UK was one of the countries that ignored the EU quota and took a pitifully low number of refugees.

What most people are expressing on here is the very antithesis of Daily Fail thinking? (Or are you going to argue that the DM is a socialist rag?)

But your thread was that you did not see anything wrong with the UKIP poster. Hand on heart, do you honestly think that was the message that UKIP was trying to convey? Honestly?

Additionally, if the EU's failure to enforce the quota means that we should leave, how will leaving change things for refugees? We demonstrated last year that we would not take our fair share, despite what the EU said. How will this change if we leave?

I am genuinely interested in the thought process of this.

ghostyslovesheep · 17/06/2016 20:24

every single EU county - apart from Spain and Finland, has taken more refugees than us - funny that when they are all doing nothing according to you Hmm

You vote for Euro MP's btw and you vote for the government that has a place in all the decision making

BartholinsSister · 17/06/2016 20:38

You can vote for MEPs all you like, but it's the European Commission that decides EU policies, behind closed doors.

ghostyslovesheep · 17/06/2016 20:51

the EU Commissions decisions are VOTED on by the EU Parliament - the people you elect - the commission has no powers to pass legislation

Topcraft · 17/06/2016 20:55

The commission makes proposals. They are decided on by the Council of Ministers - the directly elected governments - and the European Parliament.

And the OP's gripe appears to be that the UK is not doing enough. So that's your local MP who should be the first port of call.

Nothing stops the UK government doing more for refugees (if that's what you're after...). No need to "take back control"! Westminster has all the powers it needs on this one!

frumpet · 17/06/2016 21:20

Funny isn't it that just over 24 hours after a woman who might have expressed a slightly different opinion to you OP was brutally murdered for no other reason than she had the audacity to hold that different opinion and the main political parties decided , out of a mark of respect , to cease campaigning on the referendum for now , YOU decide to post this absolute fucking shite ?

Well done OP , you must be so proud of yourself .

HeartsofOak · 17/06/2016 21:32

Oh the irony Frumpet

.... would the nastiness be because you don't quite agree with me? It must be awful getting so angry when people don't agree with you. Very tiring for you.

OP posts:
frumpet · 17/06/2016 21:41

Nope Hearts , differences of opinion are fantastic , being able to express them and discuss the nuances of them is great , without them, where on earth would MN be ?

Your timing is still absolutely shite and show's a level of disrespect that is quite astoundingly pompous .

Thanks, drummersmum.
It is quite astounding, that letter, not surprising, but just adds another piece to the picture.

HeartsofOak, look support UKIP, vote Brexit, whatever.
You are of course entitled to your opinion.
But failing to see what makes that poster so distasteful is just strange. Or deliberate.

MypocketsarelikeNarnia · 17/06/2016 21:45

Personally I'm happy that I get angry with racist scum. It's one of the things I like about myself. Not tiring at all.

I suspect other people on this thread feel the same way.

It would be tiring being a supercilious smug cunt like Nigel all the time. Constantly having to pretend I can't see my own privilege. Having to engage in double think so I can sleep at night while children fleeing war drown in the Med. That would be fucking exhausting.

HTH
