To think Owen Jones is childish

Owen Jones storms off sky news

I don't even get what his issue is, he's invited on to discuss the headlines and then runs off as he doesn't like how much attention the biggest story is getting.Confused

I know Owen Jones can be a right cunt and has said some horrible things about other groups, but I think he was right on this.

How amazing. White non-Jewish non-Irish gay man is fine about killing civilians in Ireland, relaxed about appearing with violent anti-Semites and incredibly tentative about even thinking about criticising the problem within Labour, but suddenly gets totes emosh over the killing of gay men. Even though the killer is one of the people whom he normally thinks can do no wrong, viz. Muslims whose times tables only include 7.62x39. That's convenient, Owen: 11 Irish dead at Enniskillen on Remembrance Day, "I support the IRA militarily", 50 gay people dead in the USA "Oh noes, this is dreadful". Someone should ask Jones precisely what the shooter did wrong so as not to be praised to the skies, as Jones does the IRA, Hamas and the like.

Lots of people want to blame gun control laws too. There's a raging debate on the original thread about the Orlando shootings.

MitzyLeFrouf · 13/06/2016 15:29

More than one issue can be cause for blame you know....

It was carried out by a Muslim. So it's easy to say that this was a crime carried out in the name of Islam. Which it was. Well I'm glad we've established that. It's an attack against LGBT people in the name of Islam in a country where many Christians hate LGBT people and it is easy to buy guns.

emotionsecho · 13/06/2016 15:38

I saw the programme and as you rightly point put Ego there was a lot to discuss about the Orlando massacre which was reflected in the headlines and stories in the papers they were trying to review. The other two people were trying to discuss these alternative aspects and how various papers had run the story and what individual papers and people had said or focused on, however, Owen Jones only wanted one aspect to be discussed and only one point of view to be heard - his.

So many issues. I do wonder how Trump will react

I wondered that too, if he handles this wrong it might stop his political career in its tracks. He has said some awful things previously about the lgbt community.

AnotherEffingOrangeRevel · 13/06/2016 15:40

this was a crime carried out against LGBT people by someone who used religion to justify their homophobia. There are many crimes carried out by people who use religion to justify their homophobia.

...and because the religion in this case is Islam, it's Terrorism rather than horrific mass murder. And, as we all know, Terrorists get treated differently (and we don't have to examine their motivation so much because they're just Terrorists), and Terrorism can be used to motivate us to support horrific other types of killing all across the world. And so it continues...

I think OJ is a bit of an idiot. But then I would, I completely disagree with him on just about everything!

MorrisZapp · 13/06/2016 15:45

Trump will not be harmed by his reaction to this. Every time he says or does something appalling, his ratings go up.

He's made his feelings about guns very clear. Don't know his stance on LGBT issues but suspect medieval. Doesn't stop him at all.

LoisWilkersonsLastNerve · 13/06/2016 15:49

Morris You might be right about that. He hasn't said anything horrific about gay people but would like to see same sex marriage overturned which is quite astonishing in this day and age.

Sunnsoo · 13/06/2016 15:55

I'm confused, so Jones was upset because the other 2 weren't calling it an LGBT crime, but at the same time he was upset that they connected it to Islam? So he wants one connection but not the other?

Lynnm63 · 13/06/2016 15:59

Just imagine him with Katie Hopkins, Clarkson and Eddie Izzard on the same show. Question Time maybe?
You'd need to provide the interviewer with a chair and a whip like an old fashioned lion tamer. Maybe Jeremy Kyle to host it wouldn't be fair to drop Dimbleby in the midst of that. You could take bets as to who would punch first. Was going to suggest a drinking game for offensive comments but we'd all be passed out drunk in 5 mins!

Corbyn has an interesting take on the terrorist attack.

Lynnm63 · 13/06/2016 16:08

Sunsoo both others accepted gunman was homophobic but went on to say it was also Islamic terrorism. Owen Jones became cross that they were suggesting both. He wanted it only as an LGBT crime.

MorrisZapp · 13/06/2016 16:12

Yup. Both newsreaders said it was homophobic. But also a terror and gun control issue.
