To think that smoking in a cafe garden is selfish?

I was in a cafe for lunch earlier, beautiful weather so sat in the garden at the back to eat, and there were a few people smoking as they ate/drank.
I understand that it's an outdoor space, and it's legal, but to smoke in such close proximity to other people who are enjoying a meal, is just selfish.
I also understand that I could have sat inside, but I didn't want to sit inside on such a nice day.
It just really irritates me, can they not last 30 mins or an hour without a fag?

I think smokers need to wear special helmets or masks,

they are choosing to smoke but their smoke is not staying round them, its also a horrid smell.

if people still smoked pipes I dont think there would be such issues but fag smoke is horrid.

Darrelrivers · 06/06/2016 20:21

It's absolutely horrible to open your mouth to taste food and end up with a mouth full of smoke. Smokers like alcoholics are selfish. Can't wait for the day smoking is banned in all places serving food.

gamerchick · 06/06/2016 20:26

Yeah I used to do that boney but my fav couldn't get moved on a weekend pub ended up being turned into a bookies after the ban.

ABCAlwaysBeCunting · 06/06/2016 20:29

I do find this persistent badgering of smokers annoying though. Jesus christ, I even had some guy come up to me in central London a couple of weeks ago as I was enjoying one of the very few cigarettes I smoke, in an open square well away from anyone else, to tell me that he didn't like me standing there and smoking as it was polluting. You're in central London and you find the only smoker in a 100 foot radius and come over to complain? Really?

eightbluebirds · 06/06/2016 20:33

Of course it's selfish. They're doing what they want because they want to despite the fact its massively off putting for those trying to eat around them.

halighhalighaliehaligh · 06/06/2016 20:34

YABU. The cafe allow it and the law allows it so you have the choice to sit outside and enjoy the sun but put up with the smoke or sit inside smoke free without the sun. You chose the first option so why complain now?

Buckinbronco · 06/06/2016 20:38

It's not off putting for everyone. Most people don't notice. Only hysterical keyboard warriors who claim to die of an asthma attack the second someone opens the box

Jelliedeels · 06/06/2016 20:43

Buckin - EXACTLY.

They are the same ones that moan about people having a BBQ or kids playing in the garden next door.

The pearl clutchers have to moan about something.

See you here this time next yearGrin

BeALert · 06/06/2016 20:43

In Australia, smoking is illegal within so many metres (can't remember how many, but it's a high number) of any premises serving food! Why can't we in the UK have that law introduced?

Same here (New England). I don't miss this about the UK at all.

Jelliedeels · 06/06/2016 20:44

BeAlert - cause we are not in Australia.

I don't even notice smoking. Weed smoking I notice Grin and am a bit disturbed by because it's naughty. Smokers smoke, it's what they do. No
Big deal

Alisvolatpropiis · 06/06/2016 20:52

Yanbu.

I smoke but generally speaking don't like someone blowing smoke at me whilst I'm eating so extend the same courtesy to others.

However in pub beer gardens where everyone is just drinking, I will smoke as I please

I'm about 20% with Buckinbronco Grin and 80% YANBU. It all depends on the scenario really. If the outside eating area is usually the smoking area and they just bung a few tables out when it's sunny, and/or if they have signs up saying it's the smoking area, then YABU. You had fair warning.

But in general, even as a smoker myself (currently, dammit!) I am surprised at how much others seem to smoke. I mean, I can happily chain smoke a few myself, but sitting down after a meal or during a break from doing stuff. But others smoke whilst they're doing stuff, whilst walking along, etc... seems a waste of a good fag* tbh, how can they enjoy it if they're busy doing something else?!

*waves as US citizens

Arkwright · 06/06/2016 20:58

I hate the smell of smoke especially when eating. Vapers smell too and blow huge clouds of smoke.

WanderingNotLost · 06/06/2016 20:59

gamerchick

Where was the support of all the whiners then when they got their way?

We were underage and couldn't smoke or drink anywhere anyway so it didn't really affect us. Now we're in our late 20's/early 30's, some with our own young children, and we don't understand why all outdoors everywhere should be the territory of a bunch of selfish wankers who don't give a shit that people around them are being forced to breathe in their smoke just because they don't want to sit indoors on a nice day.

Jelliedeels · 06/06/2016 20:59

Ark - they blow clouds of water vape. No smoke

trickleupeffect · 06/06/2016 21:02

YABU. And I say this as a non-smoker who hates the smell. BTW my Dad (81) smokes a pipe and I totally disagree that it's more pleasant than cigarette smoke. Ditto cigars. All foul-and those vaping pens which give out mad clouds of caramel funk. Manky but legal. And you don't own the outdoors, so until you do.....

Alisvolatpropiis · 06/06/2016 21:02

Wandering

The smoking ban didn't come in until 2006 (Wales), later in England so most late 20's/ early 30's age people would have experienced smoking being allowed in drinking venues, albeit briefly.

I'm 27 and can remember restaurants having "smoking sections".

Buckinbronco · 06/06/2016 21:02

I don't believe anyone is that daft wandering

ItsALuigi · 06/06/2016 21:03

YANBU.

It's beyond inconsiderate. If you want a fag go away and smoke where people aren't eating not everyone wants your lifestyle choice thrust (sometimes literally) down their throat.

ApostrophesMatter · 06/06/2016 21:06

Maybe meat eaters should be forced to eat inside in case the smell of meat upsets veggies.

GlacindaTheTroll · 06/06/2016 21:08

"If you want a fag go away and smoke where people aren't eating not everyone wants your lifestyle choice thrust (sometimes literally) down their throat."

They're smoking in the smoking area, so exercising their lifestyle choice in the correct place.

If you don't want to eat in the smoking area, you don't have to..
