This is the letter left on DP's van yesterday. We live at 215, attached to 213, then there's a road and then 211 where note writer lives.

I'm having to sit on my hands so I don't write a response. AIBU to think this is a bit passive aggressive or AIBU to park van there?

[Message from MNHQ: We've had to remove the attached letter as it was a bit too identiyfing. We realise the rest of the thread will make little sense now to anyone new to the thread, but we're leaving it up so the OP can continue to discuss with those already on board].

Hang on a second OneMagnum. You are saying that people who use a van for work should not be able to park near where they live? You're just being silly now aren't you?

Why? Either leave your van at your place of work or otherwise are you not effectively running a business from your house? So are you paying business rates? I think probably not.

ChardonnayKnickertonSmythe · 04/06/2016 16:42

There is a special place in hell for all those parking vans and the like in residential areas.
Wankers.

poorbuthappy · 04/06/2016 16:43

Christ I've never shouted RTFT so much.

snowgirl29 · 04/06/2016 16:45

If DP can't park outside DMs house as he'd be blocking the road then that's a pretty big van OP! Confused and I'm talking as someone who's NDN parks his pretty big van outside my house daily without causing an obstruction.
Yes I mumble a bit a lot about it but they're legally parked and I don't own the road so I get on with it, disclaimer: No I'm not the OPs neighbour! Grin .

I don't think the note is passive aggressive, it is a polite request, as others have said, you don't have to comply.

ChardonnayKnickertonSmythe · 04/06/2016 16:45
Hmm
Gabilan · 04/06/2016 16:47

I've never shouted RTFT so much.

Any minute now someone will say the OP should cancel the cheque.

GeorgeTheThird · 04/06/2016 16:47

Just move it. Rightly or wrongly, it's bothering the neighbour. Be nice.

Cally70 · 04/06/2016 16:47

I bet this story will be in the DM within the week!

SquinkiesRule · 04/06/2016 16:50

I'd just ignore her. She's moaning about 6 inches of van roof she can see above the fence on late evenings and weekends, and she's moaned about someone who put their own RV in the drive for a while, she's a Hyacinth Bucket wannabe.

PreciousVagine · 04/06/2016 16:50

Have you considered self employed people do work from home, one magnum? Grin

Bluewombler2k · 04/06/2016 16:51

onemagnum your last response doesn't even makes sense. Tradespeople work all over the place, all over large areas, how can they just leave their van with all of their tools etc half-way across the county each night and then figure out how to get home (and repeat every night from different places). They park vans near where they live because it's where they live, how is that working from home? Bizarre.

Cheby · 04/06/2016 16:53

Ignore her, she is bonkers. She's upset because she's had 6inches of a van visible above her garden fence for a couple of hours, down the side of her house. Parked perfectly legally.

Essentially she's lost sight of 6 inches of sky for a couple of hours. This is not (see what I did there? Grin) a hardship.

snowgirl29 · 04/06/2016 16:58

Everyone has read it's at the side of the property. People are just giving their experiences about what pees them off.

OP. You can just ignore it like others have said. Or just write a polite note saying sorry for the inconvenience but she is right. She doesn't own the road, you are legally parked and it is only temporary.

How well does your DM get on with the neighbour in question?

user7755 · 04/06/2016 16:58

I've never shouted RTFT so much.

Why? What are people missing? Hope it wasn't me who missed something but I have checked back and it's only the fact that there are already 2 cars on the drive which stops the van getting on too.

snowgirl29 · 04/06/2016 17:00

user7755 I think its because people keep pointing out what an eyesore some workvans are outside the front of the house but OP has already stated this is down the side of the Neighbours house. I may be wrong though.

user7755 · 04/06/2016 17:03

Aah, thank you. I always assume that it's me who makes mistakes!

juicee13 · 04/06/2016 17:04

I can't believe people are telling OP to move the van! Why should they? If that's the closest, legal parking space to your mums house then park there.

Gabilan · 04/06/2016 17:04

It's various things. Apart from anything else, the OP has said that there isn't room for the van +1 car on the drive and yet people keeping saying "just swap one car with the van". And then there's all the "oh you can't park in front of her house" when she's at the side of the house. And she can't park the van in front of her mum's for a couple of reasons.

KinkyAfro · 04/06/2016 17:09

Ok, the van won't block the actual road but it will make it a lot more difficult for cars to pass on both sides. It's not really an eyesore, it's a plain white, brand new transit van awaiting the company branding. And yes, it is down the side of her house, on a side street, behind a 6 ft fence.

OP posts:
SilverBirchWithout · 04/06/2016 17:09

It's interesting all the comments about the neighbour not owning the road (of course she doesn't) which she acknowledged in the note. But OP doesn't want to park in front of her DM's house, because she doesn't want to ruin HER grass. Anyone not able to see the irony in this selfish attitude.

Just move the van to somewhere else.

KinkyAfro · 04/06/2016 17:11

Really silver? Yes I don't want to ruin the grass, by parking where I am, I'm not ruining anyone's grass.

OP posts:
paniniswapx3 · 04/06/2016 17:12

Juicee, I agree the Op isn't doing anything illegal by parking there however it is clearly bothering the neighbour (whether we agree or not with their perspective) so I think they should park the van elsewhere.

RaptorInaPorkPieHat · 04/06/2016 17:13

Be warned, expect your DH's work to be contacted if he gets the logo on the van before you move Wink

Haffdonga · 04/06/2016 17:13

It's just good old fashioned snobbery because a van equals trade . if it was a BMW they'd be fine.

We had the neighbours complain to the police about our temporary visitor's van parked perfectly legally on a broad road behind their 8 foot high leylandii hedge because it somehow spoiled their view through their hedge. The police politely told them to stop wasting their time. They then left a crate of eggs smashed ont eh windscreen Hmm

Funnily enough the same neighbour now has an even higher Leave the EU campaign banner mounted on a flat bed truck parked permanently in the same spot. can't be bothered to spend my money on European eggs

It sounds like you've parked in the best spot for everyone concerned so I'd just ignore and smile ignore and smile.
