Aibu to be annoyed neighbours snake was found in our garden?

This afternoon we were greeted with this visitor (pictured) in the garden. Turns out when we asked next door it was there and has been missing for 2 and half weeks and had last see it going under there decking. I'm frightened of snakes, we also have a baby ,a toddler and a 7 year old.

Am i unreasonable that they should of informed us it was lost and that they would let a snake (regardless if it's a pet snake) roam freely outside and end up in someone else's garden. The thought of my toddler picking it up not realising it was real or it going near the baby or 7 year makes my stomach turn.

And come on, they could have told neighbours - bit like a lost dog except perhaps more alarming for most. Some people might have trod on it or attacked it or something.

Stardust160 · 29/05/2016 18:15

*Yermammy*I would of died!

DH would have had a cardiac, he's phobic. Dogs would have eaten it. Purely because I wouldn't want it to be harmed, I'd want to know it was loose and it would have been nice had the neighbours let you know it was out and harmless. Last time the neighbours lost one of theirs, they did let us know. It was a python!!

MooseAndSquirrel · 29/05/2016 18:15

They do carry salmonella, children under 7 have to be super strict on hand washing.
Reptile shops cant even let pregnant staff handle the reptiles as its very easy to catch & dangerous to vulnerable immune systems!
id also be concerned that it would still bite if trodden on by little feet, venomous or not that's still going to hurt!

Boozena · 29/05/2016 18:16

I agree there's a chance it would bite in self defence if grabbed/squeezed but honestly, their 'teeth' are like rough velcro- would only draw a tiny amount if blood if any at all- though clearly this is worst case scenario and nobody wants to be bitten! Not directed at anyone- just a bit of info.

IoraRua · 29/05/2016 18:17

They should've told you, but I'd be doing it more as a general heads up and out of concern for the snake. I imagine there's people out there who would try to kill it if they saw a random snake slithering about.

acasualobserver · 29/05/2016 18:19

You should have eaten it. They taste like chicken apparently.

MumOnTheRunCatchingUp · 29/05/2016 18:19

What would you have done if you'd known op??

Also you say you 'don't expect to find them in your back garden'....... We have snakes in the wild in the uk. You know this I'm sure, so you should expect to see one

AnotherUsernameBitesTheDust · 29/05/2016 18:19

Awwww, it's cute! I love snakes. But I'd still be a bit shocked to find one in my garden. Your neighbours WBU by not telling you it was missing.

Ratbagcatbag · 29/05/2016 18:20

Awww he's a lovely corn snake. I have his twin in my house. :)

I get why you're upset, but honestly they won't hurt you, I had a big seven ft Bairds rat snake that bit me, it made me jump but hurt a darn sight less than a wasp sting. (My fault, was tipsy and wanted to show him to my mate, he was not impressed with me and let me know)
I know people that let their snakes roam outside, I don't but only because I'd be stressed out if I lost him. They will avoid people at all costs, so like a previous poster said unless you're a mouse you're fine. Washing hands is always recommended after handling them though.

Stardust160 · 29/05/2016 18:20

I thought so moose I could of see my toddler easy pick it up thinking it was a toy snake as DS has a toy snake😬 At 2 and half she wouldn't necessarily think it was real.

I wouldn't harm it but I could of easily killed it by cutting the grass which I only did the other day.

I'd be pretty pissed off with my neighbours for not giving a heads up that it was missing. I'm terrified of snakes. I have no idea.

Finding a snake in my house would have me panicking and I'd have been terrified. Finding a snake in my house when I knew my neighbours non-venomous, friendly, snake was missing would have be screaming for the neighbours, but would be less heart-attack inducing.

It's basic manners.

Lilicat1013 · 29/05/2016 18:21

It's beautiful, I'm glad you were able to help you neighbours get it back home although it probably would have been a good idea to mention it to you when it was missing.

Sorry it upset you, hopefully it wont get out again or at least end up in a different garden, my son would have been over joyed if we had a snake in our garden!

sockrage · 29/05/2016 18:22

We lost our snake years ago. They are escape artists! We never did find ours. 😞

They probably didn't say because people freak out where snakes are concerned.

It looks like a corn snake. Harmless apart from the need to wash your hands.

Boozena · 29/05/2016 18:24

I think From what I can remember the salmonella thing is from their poo. As they eat raw food- mice- the poo can contain salmonella bacteria, then if you don't clean it immediately and they slither in it, the salmonella is on their skin.
Things like turtles you've got to be more careful as they poo in the water, therefore are in more frequent contact with it.
The pet shop thing will be an insurance clause I should imagine. Pregnant people and little ones/elderly more at risk due to compromised immune system?

Katiepoes · 29/05/2016 18:25

If they had told you though would you not have been freaking out at every sound imagining it was the snake?

Merd · 29/05/2016 18:27

This just popped up on my Facebook feed.

I will never go to the toilet again.

Orwellschild · 29/05/2016 18:33

Why is no one understanding that there was a bloody snake in your garden! Yanbu yanbu yanbu!!!!

MrsSpecter · 29/05/2016 18:34

Stardust160 · 29/05/2016 18:34

Aargh that would be a big shock merd. I wouldn't of harmed it if it wasn't next doors but I would of got RSPCA out. Afew month back there were some pythons found abandoned in the local area I think it was three in total.

notonyurjellybellynelly · 29/05/2016 18:34

Stardust I would have passed out if I'd found that in the garden.

MrsSpecter · 29/05/2016 18:34

Why is no one understanding that there was a bloody snake in your garden

everyone understands what happened. There is no confusion. The picture was very clear.

FairNotFair · 29/05/2016 18:37

Absolutely YANBU, OP.

Namehanger · 29/05/2016 18:39

We found a corn snake in our workshop. Took a picture of it and phoned RSPCA, harmless, I caught it in a pillowcase and kept till the RSPCA came and took it away.

It was our neighbours, they didn't tell us ( till years later).

Anyway I like snakes.

Stardust160 · 29/05/2016 18:45

I'm glad I'm not the only one terrified of them!
