to be annoyed by Hemsley and Hemsley

Just been watching 'eat well with hemsley and hemsley'. Their thing appears to be cooking healthy, gluten free food and being hip. Tonight they went to a mega fancy shop that stocked ridiculous ingredients like bee pollen at ridiculous prices. They also won't touch refined sugar, instead using maple syrup and date syrup. AIBU to think it would bankrupt you to eat like this and it's completely unnecessary? Sugar is sugar in whatever form no? What harm does gluten do to people who aren't ceoliacs?

I find this whole thing deeply irritating. I also wonder how food miles fit into the wellness stuff?

HalsallRedux · 31/05/2016 14:56

Im so glad to see there's a thread. I thought it was just me who couldn't stand these two.

DailyMaui · 31/05/2016 15:11

And no fucker in the world will ever convince me that shredded courgette is just like spaghetti.

this

And the angry chef blog is fabulous. Thank you to the person who posted that link. I have been devouring it. Grin

sandiedc01 · 31/05/2016 15:18

Ha ha this thread is hilarious, I do love their food and they gave a completely balanced 'diet' all nutrients are in their food and they certainly won't have Osteoporosis as wheats a contributing factor as it is in tonnes in auto-immune disorders (of which I have one and due to diet am on no medication at all).
Carry on though makes me laugh.....

SirChenjin · 31/05/2016 15:22

Oh god yes - they can fuck off with their fucking bone broth. It's soup made with stock using boiled bones, just as people have always done. DSiL (who is "into nutrition" having FA else to do with her time) is now wittering on about making bone broth. It brings on my right eye twitch.

SirChenjin · 31/05/2016 15:25

Anyone else got a picture of All-in-one microwave chocolate cake with a scoop of ice-cream to the right of this thread? It's like the Gods are agreeing with this thread Grin

DailyMaui · 31/05/2016 15:59

yes I indeed have the microwave chocolate cake recipe to the right and I momentarily lamented the lack of any chocolate in the house to make it.

Perhaps I should rustle one up with an avocado, some kale, organic cocoa nibs, bone broth and a lizard.

OurBlanche · 31/05/2016 16:00

Ah, sod it! I used my last lizard yesterday. Somehow DH always knows if I substitute a newt!

Nanny0gg · 31/05/2016 16:24

I'm not sure on eating bone marrow either.

You'll have bright eyes and a very glossy coat...

Where's Fanny Craddock when you need her?

Housewife2010 · 31/05/2016 16:29

I don't think H + H are posh. They've got Estuary accents.

SirChenjin · 31/05/2016 16:33

Sod the lizard and cocoa nibs - I'm making a special trip to the shops for chocolate with the highest sugar content so that I can make the microwave choc cake whilst simultaneously extending my middle finger to H&H.

OurBlanche · 31/05/2016 16:35

ODFO, SirChenjin!

I just spluttered my tea... that's the 3rd guffaw those 2 have had out of me!! Grin

SirChenjin · 31/05/2016 16:56

Yep, they are a pair of tickets who are best laughed at Grin

Who did they know in tellyland, I wonder?

OurBlanche · 31/05/2016 17:23

I was trying to Google them... but they are so 'not known' they don't seem to have their own wiki page - but the Guardian likes them... Smile

OurBlanche · 31/05/2016 17:28

One was a model, they started a food delivery business and are a bit blech

"Sometimes when we have a new client, all we want to do is put a spoon of fat in their mouth,’ says Jasmine Hemsley"
www.standard.co.uk/lifestyle/esmagazine/londons-new-female-food-stars-8667490.html

The Mail doesn't like them and hints at a well-known – but still unnamed – actor who was willing to pay them to help with his diet. plus other showbizzy types

I used to attempt to make slightly healthier alternatives while PFB was small and I have to admit to recently trying to make avocado chocolate mousse, even the toddler wasn't impressed.

Now that DD is coeliac I would give my right arm for her to be able to eat a fucking wagon wheel!

On the plus side I am all for the gluten free fad as there's so much more choice around for her. I hope when/if it fades the new ranges and restaurant choices won't disappear too.

In terms of people feeling better eating this
way there are an estimated 500,000 undiagnosed coeliacs in the UK so stands to reason some who try this will make a substantial improvement to their health.

whois · 31/05/2016 20:44

there are an estimated 500,000 undiagnosed coeliacs in the UK

Really? Wow. I though you were really ill of you are gluten as a coeliac?

Also, while we're at it can we fuck off with things being 'nourishing'. All food is bloody nourishing.

tinkerbellvspredator · 31/05/2016 21:35

Yep large research studies randomly testing people find that about 1% of the population in UK have coeliac. Only around a quarter of them have been diagnosed.

You can be a symptomless coeliac, you can have non typical symptoms (eg mouth ulcers, aching joints, constipation) or you can just be one of the people who has been told by their GP for years that you have IBS for example. It takes on average 13 years for people to be diagnosed basically because there is poor awareness including in the medical community, eg people being told they can't be coeliac as they're not underweight despite classic symptoms.

After diagnosis when you're on a GF diet then the reaction to having even a crumb can be very severe, worse than when you were having loads of gluten every day. However some people are silent coeliacs and don't have reactions but would still be getting damage internally if they ate gluten.

Medjool dates and nut butter are delicious. I think I was missing the point of the book by only remembering the calorific snack and forgetting the stuff about brown rice flour!
I think that if you have her health condition then you have an incentive to do all this stuff because it makes a real difference to her quality of life. For the rest of us it's too much faff on a daily basis. My teenage sons would not eat Ella's recipes.

I do like Rachel Khoo. Use her pineapple, cucumber, red onion and lime salad on a regular basis. It's simple enough for me to make but still nice and different.

Agree that most of these diets are prohibitively expensive. Am really glad I didn't part with £200 for a food processor when I was in my EW fad!

oldlaundbooth · 01/06/2016 17:15

'Alice left the family home in Sussex (‘all country lanes, ponies and horses’) at 18 to read physiology and neuroscience at Bristol University. It turned out to be a costly exercise, as she spent her student loan on ingredients for handmade tortellini and ‘kind of practising and feeding my friends’. It became clear after three years that it was time to hang up her lab coat and don an apron instead.)'

From OurBlanche's link.

Pass me the bucket. The 'country lanes, ponies and horses' comments makes me particularly ill.

oldlaundbooth · 01/06/2016 17:18

I didn't realise Surbiton was actually a place: I thought it was a posh name for suburbia Grin

phlebasconsidered · 01/06/2016 17:23

I caught an old Floyd on Food the other day and what struck me was how clever the man was and how little the programme was dumbed down. He spoke both French and Spanish, demonstrated fabulous technique, and I learned something about history too. It wasn't all self promoting claptrap, there wasn't one mention of health and the food looked wonderful, even if it was shot on eighties film stock and styled that way.

I refuse to watch cookery shows now. It's all about the fad and the fame. Bring back Farmhouse Kitchen and lard!

squoosh · 01/06/2016 17:28

Imagine how it would be refreshing to see Delia and her perma-frown back on TV wearing a smart red blouse and saying things like 'pour 500ml of beef stock into the casserole dish, then leave to simmer' and other equally unexciting yet soothing instructions.

squoosh · 01/06/2016 17:29

or how refreshing it would be even!

squoosh · 01/06/2016 17:32

some people are silent coeliacs

The Silent Coeliacs would be a great band name.
