to be annoyed by Hemsley and Hemsley

Just been watching 'eat well with hemsley and hemsley'. Their thing appears to be cooking healthy, gluten free food and being hip. Tonight they went to a mega fancy shop that stocked ridiculous ingredients like bee pollen at ridiculous prices. They also won't touch refined sugar, instead using maple syrup and date syrup. AIBU to think it would bankrupt you to eat like this and it's completely unnecessary? Sugar is sugar in whatever form no? What harm does gluten do to people who aren't ceoliacs?

Can we pretend though? That'd make it much easier for me.

This post has cheered me right up. Agree with all those saying IT'S NOT BONE BROTH, IT'S STOCK and calling out their sugar nonsense. Ditto fucking courgetti.

Orthorexia is a thing. None of this is good for teenage girls.

deluxetruffles · 25/05/2016 17:10

Just buy a pot of fucking jam! You won't die - promise Grin

Helmetbymidnight · 25/05/2016 17:16

I can't stand slagging women off who happen to be on TV.

However, I have to make an exception for these two. Their show is diabolical. It's almost so bad it's good but not quite.

Macauley · 25/05/2016 17:17

Did anyone see joe wicks today on this morning basically making the markies stir fry meal deal?

There is hope for my cooking yet!

burasari · 25/05/2016 17:19

Feeling in the minority here but I actually quite like their books and the show. I've tried a few of the recipes and they're really good - lentil bake and courgetti FTW!

OohhItsNotHoxton · 25/05/2016 17:24

I saw two minutes of them once and had to change channels. I had a very unhealthy urge to slap them.

Even thinking about them makes me feel irrationally angry. Fucking smug cunts.

StrawberrytallCake · 25/05/2016 18:38

They have a cafe in Selfridges London now which I'm going to this weekend Grin ignoring all the haters

oldlaundbooth · 25/05/2016 18:59

Bring back Keith Floyd, all is forgiven.

I usually eat pretty healthy but those two make me want to eat pie chips and gravy and a buttered barm.

oldlaundbooth · 25/05/2016 19:00

Deep fried mars bar, anyone?

iLikeBoringThings · 25/05/2016 19:18

I have actually never watched the show, but love their food! I have their cook books and also the 'Deliciously Ella' cook books and use them on an almost daily basis.

Whilst i agree that some of the ingredients they use are expensive and hard to find, there are also many recipes that are quick, simple and cheap to make.

I try to avoid gluten but don't always choose gluten free options and i use dairy alternatives for everything except cheese, which i only eat a couple of times a week. I have been doing this for 3 months and I personally, have never felt better!

ChardonnayKnickertonSmythe · 25/05/2016 19:25

It's really strange.

I love all things lentils, beans, buckwheat and so on, but just can't warm to them.

ChardonnayKnickertonSmythe · 25/05/2016 19:27

Why do you avoid gluten, Boring?

Were you diagnosed with an allergy, or what made you avoid it?
Why do you think you feel better now?

I see GF recipes everywhere and I do wonder.

deluxetruffles · 25/05/2016 19:38

It makes me angry that these very young women with no qualifications in science or nutrition can get publishing deals and get put onto TV to peddle their "wellness" rubbish. I am not sure if they are misguided or just jumping on a bandwagon.

Who said maple syrup was OK? Who said certain grains were a big no no? Why is it alright to eat coconut oil by the spoonful? We accept it as accurate as it is so prevalent right now, but lets fast forward a few years and we will no doubt have moved on to something else, and their theories and bollocks about medjool dates and chocolate mousse made from avocado (I ask you!) will be laughed at as being quaint and out of date.

I stay avoid avoid avoid. They just want your money. Save it for a bottle of wine and a box of Krispy Kreme.

Oh, and can I just add that all through my twenties and most of my thirties I looked healthy and pretty and was a size ten. I never ever ever ate avocado or kale or flax seed. I ate white sliced bread and pizza and crisps and drank a LOT of alcohol - and smoked. My exercise was clubbing and I had a fuck load of fun and good times and would avoid people like this like the plague.

StrawberrytallCake · 25/05/2016 19:47

I agree the ridiculous amounts of coconut oil can't be good for you - I'm not sure on eating bone marrow either. My local Waitrose has started selling it by the packet (dd loves scooping it out when I cook a roast) so I bought some for dd with some snacky stuff for after school but after I'd cooked it and the pan had cooled there was a ridiculous amount of solidified fat - now where would that go inside our bodies? It can't be good!

I also agree that many dates in food isn't good although sugar is said to be the devil now there is so much natural sugar in dates it probably doesn't make that much difference. Allegedly Agave which they all seem to use in recipes is just as bad as sugar - tastes like candy floss though, it's lovely.

Your 20s (15-25 for me) sound similar to mine deluxe I stayed stick thin by drinking lots, eating shit and staying up late and dancing. Unfortunately 2 children and hitting my 30s has meant trying to take care of myself and I stick by some of the recipes being delicious. Plus I love a cookbook and trying something new without shit loads of oil and carbs without feeling like I'm missing out is great. My stomach goes flat and I have no digestive issues when I eat Ella's recipes consistently too. It's got to be healthy eating a varied veggie diet.

DH downstairs making beef mince Old El Paso tacos for me right now. What a healthy day.

iLikeBoringThings · 25/05/2016 22:14

I have never been tested for any food allergies/intolerances but found that changing my diet made me feel AMAZING!

I've been eating a mainly whole food, plant based diet for 3 months - i avoid dairy, (but still eat a little cheese - i'm only human after all!!), refined/processed carbs, refined sugars, i choose gluten free options when available and i stopped eating meat. I still eat a piece of fish maybe once or twice a month and still drink alcohol when i fancy. In the past 3 months, my adult acne has all but vanished (I've suffered with it my entire adult life), my stomach issues have disappeared, i have more energy, sleep better and I've lost 2.5 stone without counting a single calorie.

Whether avoiding gluten is responsible, i have no idea, but i do know that the changes i have made have worked wonders for me.

While the Hemsley sisters et al might not be for everyone, the benefits of a whole food or plant based diet has been well documented.

WittgensteinsBunny · 25/05/2016 22:42

I like some recipes from the Deliciously Ella book. Chia seed breakfast pudding and granola bars are two of the good ones that we've made. Agree that portion sizes are weird and some others are rank. The H&H book also has some nice recipes. Handy for DH who's allergic to dairy.

Isn't maple syrup lower on the GI?

Dates are obviously packed full of sugar but also contain dietary fibre. And are a whole food. So whilst eating dates exclusively wouldn't be good for you, dates are surely better than haribo?

deluxetruffles · 25/05/2016 22:54

Oh shit, aren't Haribo good for you...? Grin

Woolyback · 25/05/2016 23:09

Just wait until they are older and suffering osteoporosis, anemia and other conditions due to lack of nutrients in their diet.

iLikeBoringThings · 26/05/2016 00:37

Woolyback i would suggest you do a little research before making uneducated comments like that! The benefits of a plant based diet, both health and environmental, have been well documented.

The nutrients needed can all be found in plant based form, except for Vitamin D and Vitamin B12. Many vegan foods are fortified with B12 and Vitamin D deficiency affects 1 in 5 people in the UK, including those that eat animal products.

As long as people are nutritionally aware, there is no reason for anyone to lack nutrients, regardless of the way they choose to eat.

Hippywannabe · 26/05/2016 07:06

Haven't seen them yet (recorded it) and was looking forward to it. Maybe not so much now.

waterfallsandmountains · 31/05/2016 11:52

Boring it is really interesting as a friend of mine says the same when she gives up wheat etc. I couldn't as I am just addicted to bread and proper butter but it does interest me.

Where are you getting your protein from though if you don't eat meat, fish only once a month and no dairy? Do you eat copious quantities of eggs every day!

OurBlanche · 31/05/2016 12:27

Rachel Koo's book did at least add something to the menu. I got it at the same time as Harry Wotsits skinny France book - also well worth it.

But... I went to Ws a couple of weeks ago and, having sniggered at La Hs, I took their book up with me. I was halfway through my coffee and almond croissant when I had to choke back a laugh, missed and guffawed out loud. A member of staff came over and asked if I was OK and the lady behind me said "Oh, she's fine, she is just reading the latest Comic for Skinny Girls" - which made me guffaw all over again.

The recipe that made me laugh out loud? Well, I hadn't got to it, only read the Contents at that point: Quinoa courgette toast 3 ways

At that point I took their advice via Point 1 of their 15 Principles for Eating Well - I took my gut instinct to laugh at it and leave... bought an old Sophie Grigson book on Fish instead Smile

whois · 31/05/2016 13:02

chocolate mousse made from avocado

To be fair, I've made an avocado coco powder orange juice and zest mouse before and it's super tasty (served with fresh raspberries and a sprinkle of salt).

Think the recepie was out of the medicinal chef.

Worth trying anyway.

The whole clean eating thing gets on my nerves. Yes we should be eating a mainly plant based diet. Yes you should avoid sugar as much as possible. Yes it needs to be balanced. But maple syrup is just as bad as white sugar! Coconut oil is just as 'bad' as olive oil etc.

Someone on FB posted a good fat bad fat meme saying that bad fats are hide made in factories and good fats aren't. She wasn't able to explain how rapeseed oil is better for you than olive oil, or how the processing is different.
