to be annoyed by Hemsley and Hemsley

Just been watching 'eat well with hemsley and hemsley'. Their thing appears to be cooking healthy, gluten free food and being hip. Tonight they went to a mega fancy shop that stocked ridiculous ingredients like bee pollen at ridiculous prices. They also won't touch refined sugar, instead using maple syrup and date syrup. AIBU to think it would bankrupt you to eat like this and it's completely unnecessary? Sugar is sugar in whatever form no? What harm does gluten do to people who aren't ceoliacs?

The programme was terrible and both of them seemed awkward in front of the camera. It all seemed so insincere and rubbish. It was like they were talking to people as if they were stupid, most people who want to eat like that already know all the information they were spouting because it's been on the Internet for years!

whois · 25/05/2016 10:09

They are annoying. "Bone broth" ITS FUCKING STOCK YOU TWATS!

BeckywiththeGoodHare · 25/05/2016 10:14

I agree with zampa and Nigella - 'clean' eating, prrtthhph. (to be fair, I also dislike the 'dirty burger', 'dirty martini', etc trend too, but more because there's something grim about the idea of a 'dirty burger'. Has it been on the floor? Is there a toenail in it?) I think it's extremely unhelpful to cast moral overtones on eating habits, especially when the fad in question is being peddled to teenage girls.

deluxetruffles · 25/05/2016 10:21

It is all jumping on the big gluten-free bandwagon.

They are a marketing man's wet dream. Two pretty girls - SISTERS would you believe! Peddling their gluten-free, no sugar, quinoa-tastic lifestyle like ever other fucker these days (Amelia Freer, Madeleine Shaw, Ella whatsherface, Natasha Corret - who only got a bookdeal because her Mum is Kelly Hoppen - the list is endless).

These girls are young, of course they look healthy and pretty. I would rather take advice from a fifty year old who looks good than a twenty year old.

Surely the marketplace is now completely saturated with healthy eating and living cookbooks? Who the fuck is still buying them?

LittleRedTealight · 25/05/2016 10:34

I'll admit to having a Deliciously Ella book. Blush

Does anyone else find her recipes completely underwhelming? Everything is described as 'amazing' or 'incredible' in the preamble, but it invariably turns out as tasteless gloop. I think I'm scarred for life by her butternut squash lasagne, it was awful. It may well just be my cooking though. Wink

Macauley · 25/05/2016 10:55

Thank goodness littlered its not just me! I got the deliciously ella book and everything I've made out of it has tasted awful. Plus far too expensive to buy all the fancy dates, coconut oil and almond butter you need to make things.

BeautyGoesToBenidorm · 25/05/2016 11:02

I've got Madeleine Shaw's book, because her recipes are lovely and even DH happily eats them. I agree with PPs in that her attitude towards nutrition seems a bit more balanced than the other pretty new food gurus, but I'm under absolutely no illusions that she's some kind of nutritional Messiah or anything. I'm just a sucker for cookbooks Wink

On the other hand, I found 'Superfoods' by Julie Montagu made me want to spiralise my brain.

squoosh · 25/05/2016 11:07

Bone broth? Stock. It's called stock.

Yes, I just want to to yell 'IT'S BLOODY WELL CALLED STOCK, STOP TRYING TO MAKE 'BONE BROTH' HAPPEN'.

squoosh · 25/05/2016 11:10

They made these ginger biscuits that looks utterly unappealing and that's with the assistance of food stylists and food photographers. Plus as it was grain free (but of course) they used about £15 worth of ground almonds to make a dozen of the sad little biscuits.

I'll just have ordinary ginger snaps thanks.

Enb76 · 25/05/2016 11:12

If you watch it as if it's a comedy send-up it's quite good.

If you watch it like it's a serious programme then it's a bunch of pretentious shite.

MumOnACornishFarm · 25/05/2016 11:13

Anyone who believes that tahini spread on a bloody slice of apple is a 'snack' wants shooting. A crisp sandwich is a snack! They're repressed, feel sorry for them.

squoosh · 25/05/2016 11:17

Twitter hasn't taken the Hemsley sisters to their bosom Grin I doubt they'll be getting a second series.

I know cookery programmes are selling a lifestyle but their lifestyle makes sitting in a leaking caravan in Llandudno mainlining Fray Bentos pies look more appealing.

GoblinLittleOwl · 25/05/2016 11:18

I am amazed anyone takes them seriously. Style over substance, literally.

Laquila · 25/05/2016 11:22

exexpat thanks for that Vice link - the Ruby Tandoh article made for very interesting reading.

Peppapogstillonaloop · 25/05/2016 11:27

Ella's recipes are mostly awful..quantities are all wrong half the time. The only one that tastes good is the raw brownie I think

squoosh · 25/05/2016 11:29

And no fucker in the world will ever convince me that shredded courgette is just like spaghetti.

00100001 · 25/05/2016 11:30

Life is too short to deny yourself a bit of bread and butter.

Kit30 · 25/05/2016 11:36

Went to local v trendy 'clean' food caff with friend. Beans with a side order of smug. Couldn't stop laughing at pseudo science being peddled by staff. Helmsleys - which planet are they on? Can they be sent back?

derxa · 25/05/2016 11:38

I was going to start a thread on this very subject. DS (27) who's into cooking in a big way loves them Confused. We watched their programme the other day and at least it gave us a laugh!

marushka82 · 25/05/2016 11:41

Cannot stand Ella Woodward with her super OTT optimistic outlook and 'Have a beautiful day everyone!'. I have to confess to buying her first book though I made maybe one thing from it. Cannot bloody afford brown rice flour and medjool dates by the kilos. The amount of medjool dates she uses is shocking. Not only are they super expensive but also packed with sugar. Natural, yes, but still sugar.
I need to watch that H&H show.

squoosh · 25/05/2016 11:41

I love all the 'we don't use refined sugars in our cooking so here's ten tablespoons of maple syrup and date syrup instead'

Confused
derxa · 25/05/2016 11:48

On the plus side their mum seems lovely. She can cook.

FankEweVeryMuch · 25/05/2016 11:51

I hate the taste dates give things. What are medjool dates compared to normal dates from lidl anyway?

squoosh · 25/05/2016 11:55

I think medjool dates are softer and sweeter but I can't imagine that there can be a massive difference between them and bog standard dates. Aside from the price.

Yourarejokingme · 25/05/2016 11:56

I make bone broth for my dogs and stock for us. I have label or the hubby would use the dogs lol!!!!

And I'm like who the hell are these people.
