A man that looks on glass
On it may stay his eye

Not because of who I am
But because of what You've done.
Not because of what I've done
But because of who You are.

annandale · 23/05/2016 22:58

Drop, drop slow tears
And bathe those beauteous feet
which brought from Heaven the news and Prince of Peace.

Vaguely luscious and uncomfortable.

StillMedusa · 23/05/2016 22:59

'when change and tears are past,
All safe and blessed we shall meet at last.' a line from one of my favourite hymns..sang it at my Gran's funeral.

On mis printed hymns however.. you remember 'Lord of the Dance'??
Well... my family were at my BIL's wedding... and it was on the order of service.

Except, instead of the line, 'They whipped and they stripped and they hung me on high, and left me there on a cross to die'

It said;
'They whipped and they stripped and they hung me on high, and left me there on a cross to dry

We TRIED to keep a straight face, tried not to catch each other's eye... but it was no good. We howled...

Cry out, dominions, princedoms, powers,
Virtues, archangels, angel choirs
Alleluia alleluia alleluia ...

Ormally · 23/05/2016 23:10

Old friends, old scenes, will lovelier be,
as more of heaven in each we see;

TQV - Ye Watchers, and ye Holy Ones

ToniWol · 23/05/2016 23:15

Oh. watching this thread. Love singing from our English Hymnals (two in the house, I'm sop and DH is tenor).

I recognise the quotes but can't get my brain working to sing the full hymns, so shall post a section of my favourite:

Of the best that thou hast giv'n
Earth and heaven render thee

jay55 · 23/05/2016 23:16

Medusa imagining Jesus hung out with the small a has me howling now.

AugustaFinkNottle · 23/05/2016 23:18

I love "Dear Lord and Father of Mankind" but it does grate a bit singing "Forgive our foolish ways".

Puzzledandpissedoff · 23/05/2016 23:19

I love all these, but for a really good sing I still think it's hard to beat Guide Me Oh Thou Great Redeemer

Of course it really needs a Welsh voice to get the best out of it ... now what does that rousing tune remind me of? Wink Grin

Ormally · 23/05/2016 23:19

Medusa: I can't now see the words to 'While Shepherds Watched' without remembering a fateful Christmas typo that was (no, not the usual variants on alternative words, but):
'Thus spake the Seraph; and forthwith appeared a shining thong'

StillMedusa · 23/05/2016 23:23

Jay55... exactly. My DD1 was the culprit..she just lifted her arms slightly and said 'on a rotary line?' and that was IT. Best wedding ever ..I've never laughed so much. Especially as everyone just sang what was printed.

Luckily we don't see BIL very often.... Grin

FishWithABicycle · 23/05/2016 23:23

acasualobserver

I think it is describing the extent to which the earth shall be filled with the glory of God. i.e. the same extent as to which the sea is full of water.

StillMedusa · 23/05/2016 23:24

Shining thong...weeps

Puzzledandpissedoff · 23/05/2016 23:28

Oh yes Augusta

where Jesus knelt to share with thee
the silence of eternity
interpreted by love!

Beautiful Smile

LucilleLeSueur · 24/05/2016 00:16

Augusta yes yes yes!

Let sense be dumb, let flesh retire;
Speak through the earthquake, wind, and fire,
O still, small voice of calm.

EffieIsATrinket · 24/05/2016 07:25

Dear Lord and Father of Mankind

I love you more than gold and silver
Only you can satisfy
You alone are my hearts desire
And the apple of my eye.

Helenluvsrob · 24/05/2016 07:32

Eiffels

That as the deer.

Love threads like this. I think it would be my mastermind subject!

Sang my favourite line on Sunday - it's not a difficult hymn to guess but just - the wide vocabulary !

Consubstantial coeternal

Just love it !

EffieIsATrinket · 24/05/2016 08:03

I had to google that one Helen though I do know it from times of yore.

Laud and honour to the father.

How about...

Jesus! the name that charms our fears,
That bids our sorrows cease;
’Tis music in the sinner’s ears,
’Tis life, and health, and peace.

LarrytheCucumber · 24/05/2016 08:23

'Tis life and health and peace, tis life and health and peace, tis life and health and peace.' Jesus the name high over all.

'Hands that flung stars into space
To cruel nails surrendered.'

EffieIsATrinket · 24/05/2016 08:26

Hmm I know it as part of O For A Thousand Tongues Larry. Could Wesley have recycled his material? Shock

Momamum · 24/05/2016 08:27

"dear lord and father of mankind, forgive our foolish ways. Restore us to our rightful minds.."
Why oh why did my sister choose that one for us to sing at mums funeral?Shock Grin
Mum was severely demented during the last period of her life and I was her sole carer in her home until a last stroke finished her off.
I loved my mum, but during the service, after that hymn, I was struggling to contain my rising hysteria as I remembered all the times like the one when a fishmonger called round while I was out, mum bought kippers and 'tidied' them away. I knew what she'd bought, I could smell them, but for the love of God, mum, please can you remember where you've bloody put them? Or the other one when she put her false teeth in steradent in a teapot (the one that was never used and kept in a display cabinet and never used), etc. Just normal everyday occurrences that came flooding back..Grin

LarrytheCucumber · 24/05/2016 08:32

Oh no Efforts my years as a Baptist have corrupted my memory. The shame. We hardly ever sing hymns. Must get out my edition of the Methodist Hymnbook. I might have to leave this thread in embarrassment.Blush

LarrytheCucumber · 24/05/2016 08:33

And to make things worse autocorrect- has changed your name Effielsatrinket

EffieIsATrinket · 24/05/2016 08:34

Lol I wouldn't do that Larry. Am now CofI so a few differences in our hymnal too!
