A man that looks on glass
On it may stay his eye

Ex cathedral schoolgirl (before girls could be choristers Sad) and chapel choir here. Thirty and twenty years ago respectively but this thread is bringing it all back. Am getting most of them by humming the tunes, which hooks me into the words ...

'from earths wide bounds, from oceans farthest coast,
Through gates of pearl streams in the countless host,
Singing to Father, Son and Holy Ghost ...'

EffieIsATrinket · 24/05/2016 08:45

Just recognised 'hands that flung stars into space...' as Servant King, one of my all time favourites.

LarrytheCucumber · 24/05/2016 08:47

One of my favourites too Effie GK at his best. (Hope I got that one right or I will be in trouble!)

brassywind · 24/05/2016 08:53

Oh this is a great thread! Another church chorister here from many years ago. I've been humming all the melodies as I've read through the threadSmile

Thousands only live to bless thee ....

undersoap · 24/05/2016 09:12

Ahh, I love hymns! My grandad used to listen to his hymns every day and after he died it was years before I could get through a hymn without sobbing! We had this one at my DB's wedding in memory of him:

Great is thy faithfulness, O God my Father
There is no shadow of turning with thee
All I have needed thy hand hath provided
Great is thy faithfulness Lord unto me

My personal one that we always absolutely belt out at church - does anyone recognise it?

I stand amazed in the presence of Jesus the Nazarene
And wonder how he could love me, a sinner condemned, unclean
How marvellous, how wonderful
And my song shall ever be
How marvellous, how wonderful
Is my saviour's love for me

Eeesh, getting a bit weepy!

LarrytheCucumber · 24/05/2016 09:15

Yes Underseal and some modern songwriter has ruined it by blending it with another song. We never get to sing the original now. Sad

LarrytheCucumber · 24/05/2016 09:17

Undersoap another name autocorrect- doesn't like.

undersoap · 24/05/2016 09:17

Oh and one I always listen to when I'm going through an anxious patch

What a friend we have in Jesus, all our sins and griefs to bear
What a privilege to carry everything to God in prayer
Oh, what peace we often forfeit, oh, what needless pain we bear
All because we do not carry everything to God in prayer

Have we trials and temptations? Is there sorrow anywhere?
We should never be discouraged, take it to the Lord in prayer
Can we find a friend so faithful, who will all our sorrows share?
Jesus knows our every weakness. Take it to the Lord in prayer.

The first line of the second verse always brings me to tears - it makes me feel like the singer is actually asking each hearer personally if they are troubled.

undersoap · 24/05/2016 09:18

Haha, Underseal, I like it! Have they? Who's that?! I don't know it, though maybe that's a good thing!

LarrytheCucumber · 24/05/2016 09:26

I wonder if it is just someone local, because I can't find it on the internet.

sandfish · 24/05/2016 10:08

I came to Jesus as I was,
Weary and worn and sad.
I found in him a resting-place
And he has made me glad!

LarrytheCucumber · 24/05/2016 10:23

' I hard the voice of Jesus say Come unto me and rest' Surely I've got that one right.
Someone at our church has decided that younger people don't relate to traditional hymns so we only get worship songs now with a very occasional rousing hymn to keep the oldies happy Sad Means I am a bit rusty on the hymn front.

Backingvocals · 24/05/2016 10:31

I love "My song is love unknown" too Happyseven

This is my Friend,
In whose sweet praise
I all my days
Could gladly spend.

I also really, really love Morning Has Broken. So simple and beautiful I find it hard to get through the words.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 24/05/2016 11:40

Hands that flung stars into space
To cruel nails surrendered

Oh wow I hadn't heard that one before - sometimes the words just burn the page (or screen)

Surprised nobody's yet mentioned the old wedding hymn Love Divine All Loves Excelling:

till we cast our crowns before thee
lost in wonder, love and praise

I'm showing my Wesleyan/Methodist upbringing, aren't I? Blush

Helenluvsrob · 24/05/2016 11:46

puzzled your Methodist back ground is definitely showing ! We had that at Mums funeral ( and Guide me Oh thou great Reedeemer at dad's - big sings for the great singers we had present, you can't cry and sing!)

One of my current favourite verses

How great a being, Lord, is thine,
which doth all beings keep!
Thy knowledge is the only line
to sound so vast a deep.
thou art a sea without a shore,
a sun without a sphere;
thy time is now and evermore,
thy place is everywhere.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 24/05/2016 12:03

... big sings for the great singers we had present, you can't cry and sing!

Absolutely Smile

Since a PP mentioned Morning Has Broken, here's a Mothers Day one, sung to the same tune:

Thank you my mother for all you give me
Caring and sharing all through each day
Wisdom which teaches how that I should be
Patience and love which shows me the way

Thank you for times when you share my sadness
Knowing you love me when I am weak
Thank you for smiles which bring back my gladness
Helping me find the life which I seek

Thank you for showing how to live rightly
Leaving the wrong and finding the truth
Lifelong examples, shining so brightly
Love which will guide me all through my youth

Toddlerteaplease · 24/05/2016 12:29

Spirit of truth and love
Life giving holy dove,
Speed forth thy flight
Move o'er the waters face
Bearing the lamp of grace
And in earths darkest place let there be light!

Or another favourite
A temper fair, with gentle air
The sunshine and the rain.

Toddlerteaplease · 24/05/2016 12:35

The goodly land we see,
with peace and plenty blessed:
a land of sacred liberty
and endless rest;
there milk and honey flow,
and oil and wine abound,
and trees of life for ever grow,
with mercy crowned.

Fluffythefish · 24/05/2016 13:06

Spirit of truth and love = thou whose almighty word

I love this one
bright skies will soon be o'er me,
where darkest clouds have been;
my hope I cannot measure,
my path to life is free;
my Saviour has my treasure,
and he will walk with me.

LarrytheCucumber · 24/05/2016 13:26

In heavenly love abiding.

Hope I got that one right.
I used to love My Song is Love Unknown in assembly.

EffieIsATrinket · 24/05/2016 13:35

Behold the Man upon a cross
My guilt upon His shoulders
Ashamed, I hear my mocking voice
Call out among the scoffers

LarrytheCucumber · 24/05/2016 13:39

Tune going through my head but can't remember what it is called Effielsatrinket

Andrewofgg · 24/05/2016 13:39

The one that gets to me is Eternal Father, strong to save.

The night the Herald of Free Enterprise went down DW and I were watching the news unfold and she was getting weepy and thought I was cold because I was not. But I knew that sometime in the days to come I would hear that at a funeral or a memorial service, and especially the rising semi-tones on

Oh hear us when we cry to Thee

and that's when I would lose it, and I did.

undersoap · 24/05/2016 13:49

How deep the Father's love for us, Larry!

EffieIsATrinket · 24/05/2016 13:49

It's Stuart Townend 'How Deep the Father's Love For Us' Larry.

I love Eternal Father as well Andrew.

No guilt in life, no fear in death
This is the power of Christ in me
From life's first cry to final breath
Jesus commands my destiny
No power of hell, no scheme of man
Can ever pluck me from His hand
Till He returns or calls me home
