A man that looks on glass
On it may stay his eye

Puzzled - it's the day thou gavest lord is ended

Puzzledandpissedoff · 23/05/2016 16:36

Got it in one Wink

They always played that at the end of the Festival of Remembrance ... seem a shame they stopped ...

Toddlerteaplease · 23/05/2016 17:46

Brenda I couldn't agree more about removing the word hobgoblin! I hate it when they change the words to well loved hymns. Especially when they make them PC.

Toddlerteaplease · 23/05/2016 17:48

Adjustable I love that verse as well as the next one especially if I'm on nights
'short as the watch that ends the night before the rising sun'

Caboodle · 23/05/2016 21:28

Bloody marvellous thread. Made my evening this.

timelytess · 23/05/2016 21:37

Grin for the thread.
I like this, even though it's modern and GK.
LED LIKE A LAMB TO THE SLAUGHTER
In silence and shame,
There on Your back You carried a world
Of violence and pain.
Bleeding, dying, bleeding, dying.

You're alive, You're alive,
You have risen, Alleluia!
And the power and the glory is given,
Alleluia, Jesus, to You.

At break of dawn, poor Mary,
Still weeping she came,
When through her grief she heard Yourvoice
Now speaking her name.
Mary, Master, Mary, Master!

At the right hand of the Father
Now seated on high
You have begun Your eternal reign
Of justice and joy.
Glory, glory, glory, glory.

And a puzzle one:
"Christ doth call
one and all:
ye who follow shall not fall."

choirmumoftwo · 23/05/2016 21:41

Timely, it's 'All my hope on God is founded'.

choirmumoftwo · 23/05/2016 21:43

Be thou and thou only the first in my heart
O Sovereign of heaven, my treasure thou art.
Beautiful:-)

alexw · 23/05/2016 21:44

Bold I approach the eternal throne and claim the crown through Christ my own.

Backingvocals · 23/05/2016 21:46

Great thread. I love George Herbert. Madonna stole some of his words once for one of her dreadful songs. I think it was the "Love bade me welcome"one.

timelytess · 23/05/2016 21:49

choir, it is, of course it is!
And 'Be thou my vision'.

Toddlerteaplease · 23/05/2016 21:50

My favourite playlist on my phone is 'The Complete new English Hymnal'

steppemum · 23/05/2016 21:52

'seven full days not one in seven I will praise thee'

when we sang this at school I thought it meant : Well, out of 7 days, I am not going to praise you for even one of them. It didn't make much sense! Was YEARS later that I realised what it meant Blush

HappySeven · 23/05/2016 21:55

I always liked the bit in My Song is Love Unknown when it goes 'love to the loveless shown, that they may lovely be'. Such a nice sentiment.

sidewindersleepstonight · 23/05/2016 22:03

How great thou art is my fave

Knackered46 · 23/05/2016 22:09

There are some really great hymns aren't there!

Toddlerteaplease · 23/05/2016 22:15

My most hated hymns are amazing grace and how great though art. Yuk yuk. Did anyone see 'a song for Jenny' last year. They had the most stunning setting of mortal flesh sung during the funeral scene by a counter tenner. It was spine tingling.

steppemum · 23/05/2016 22:19

Why do you hate those 2 toddler?

MotherBluestocking · 23/05/2016 22:20

I was once at a cathedral service singing Be Thou My Vision and the order of service had a typo so it read 'be thou my soul's shelter, be thou my string tower.' A kind of Mexican wave went through the congregation as people gradually noticed it.
I'm afraid that's ruined it for me ever since.

alexw that's "And Can it Be that I should Gain.."

Haven't sung that in decades. I used to like belting that one out on a Sunday.

steppemum · 23/05/2016 22:44

anyone get mine?
(actually I couldn't remember first line and had to google)

80s - I love belting out And can it be. Especially good if you have a load of men who will do the harmony bit.

Toddlerteaplease · 23/05/2016 22:45

Step mum, I don't know really, I just find them a bit hackneyed if you know what I mean, And a bit sentimental. So many wonderful hymns out there!

MotherBluestocking · 23/05/2016 22:47

King of Glory King of Peace. Also has a strange bit about sins replying.

Step mum, King of glory, King of peace. Lovely hymn

teafuelledradical · 23/05/2016 22:52

Nor let his eyes see sin
But through my tears.

Good Friday hymn, gets me deep inside.
