To think seeing an older lady curtesy to KM is sad to see

Just saw a photo of an older lady curtesying to Kate Middleton, I felt so sad to see it. Sad as to why anyone would feel the need to bow down to another human being.

Every day I shake my head with who people admire in this world and how the general public swallow all these pr machines. 😒

Chili criticism is fair and rational, most especially from those who fundamentally support the institution but object to the conduct of those currently within it (those of us who don't see more structural problems with it, usually). But there is a big difference between demonising and criticising, and the former isn't fair or rational, no matter who the target is, unless they're Fred West or similar.

Katie0705 · 22/05/2016 23:58

You clearly have no regard for others and certainly don't have an open mind as to what is actually being said.

Just5minswithDacre · 23/05/2016 01:08

* I feel for Diana, she was a child and couldn't have had a clue.

She grew up next to the Royal family. Her family was close to the Royals. Her sister went out with Prince Charles before she did.

She knew what she was in for. I just think she thought there'd be love there too

She really wasn't that analytical. By all accounts she was rather romantic and addicted to her step-grandmother's 'novels'.

Even in her 30s she had a contradictory combination of gut shrewdness and dizzy air-headedness. Looking our from within the system at 19, with all the emotional baggage she carried, she had no hope of reading the situation (courtship, proposal) correctly. Also she lacked anyone sensible to advise her.

Just5minswithDacre · 23/05/2016 01:09

I'm not speaking as a Diana fan, either.

I don't fully believe that Carole set the ground work for them to meet. How does a self made woman turn around and want the opposite for her kids, I don't get that bit.

Julia that's exactly how it so often works, sadly: the newly rich want desperately to buy class/ social 'status'.

LaurieMarlow · 23/05/2016 08:08

There's zero evidence that Carole Middleton masterminded the match. It's a sad reflection on the British public that they love this invented story.

And no, they didn't go to the same school. Kate went to Marlborough.

goodbyestranger · 23/05/2016 08:14

I think school = university as in the US.

OutwiththeOutCrowd · 23/05/2016 08:35

The problem with curtseying, forelock tugging etc is the lack of reciprocity.

I think we need to introduce a fairer two way curtsey as the new standard form of greeting in this country.

A modicum of exercise for the populace - and a welcome replacement for those dreaded sweaty palm encounters we call handshakes.

And yes, I want to see men curtseying too!

fascicle · 23/05/2016 09:12

I love your thinking, Outwith - reciprocal, non sexist, exercise incorporating. Grin

monarchist are indeed welcome to criticize the institution, but I kind of feel like it's criticizing the roll of dice when you don't get what you want. You read all the time on MN people whose support for the monarchy is waning because of KM and PW. Well, that just makes zero sense.

difference between demonising and criticising

I don't see the distinction you are making. My impression is her job is to look good and appear to do good, and it is on that basis that she is being criticized.

QuimWilde · 23/05/2016 09:53

I am utterly ambivalent re KM or any of the royals. I don't know them as individuals, they're nothing at all to me. Although I do find some of the personal attacks on KM pretty unpalatable and yes, misogynistic.

However.

The monarchy is a vile, outdated institution which needs to be got rid of. Royalists' arguments in favour keeping them are utterly baffling.

'They're good for tourism' - Windsor castle isn't even the top tourist attraction in Windsor. No royal residence is in the top 20 most visited UK attractions. Besides, if the monarchy ceased to exist, it's likely that the palaces would generate more tourism, because people could actually visit them. After all, nobody could suggest that a lack of royal family harmed Versailles' tourism trade. Besides, what precisely does the Queen do to promote tourism anyway? It's not as if she comes out onto the balcony of Buckingham Palace at hourly intervals and puts on a magic show for the adoring masses.

'Would you prefer Donald Trump as head of state?' - He's a mingetrumpet of gargantuan proportions but actually, yes, I would. Because he would have been democratically elected. And by that token, he could be un-elected, too.

'It's traditional' - so was slavery, locking away MH patients, being allowed to beat your wife with a stick no thicker than your thumb... When traditions are outdated and pointless, it's time to do away with them.

'The pomp and pageantry is so British' - loads of both at the state opening of parliament last week. Monarchists really can't see the hypocrisy and injustice of a woman sitting on a golden chair, wearing a £1m hat, talking about austerity and inequality. Or Princess Anne visiting the food bank I volunteer at, as happened a few months ago, complete with lackeys and a fancy car. Did I curtsey? Did I fuck.

'They work so hard' - Travelling all over the world having your picture taken next to landmarks is what most people call a holiday. Oh to be able to go in holiday several times a year and call it 'work'. I'm sure the people cleaning toilets for ten hours a day on minimum wage agree that they don't work nearly as hard as KM.

There is nothing fair or right in the poorest working people in society paying for these people's lives of luxury and privilege. If you think otherwise, I'm sorry, but you need to have a word with yourself.

corythatwas · 23/05/2016 10:14

I was brought up to curtsey to all adults. I liked it because being very shy it was something I could do without having to speak. Grin

bolleauxnouveau · 23/05/2016 10:25

quim I agree with all your points. Well said. Though I think her maj doing tricks on buckingham palace balcony could be good value.

Julia2016 · 23/05/2016 11:11

She isn't self made. She married money. Yes they established a business but there was significant money behind them from Michael Middleton 's family.

derxa · 23/05/2016 11:13

She married money. The gold digging bitch.

LikeDylanInTheMovies · 23/05/2016 11:23

Dexra

I'm not saying that at all. She happened to fall in love with a mam from a wealthy family and married into money. There's nothing wrong with that, but to describe her as 'self made' is inaccurate.

I'm a staunch republican but I find the suggestion that Carole Middleton somehow managed to manipulate william into marrying Kate is ridiculous.

acasualobserver · 23/05/2016 11:33

She happened to fall in love with a mam from a wealthy family and married into money.

On a not very relevant side note, I know a few people - men and women - who 'happened' to fall in love with a wealthy person. I think money has a special sexual attraction all of it's own.

WallisSimpson11 · 23/05/2016 11:34

I agree with everything you say! You put it brilliantly. Star Star

I just don't understand how people can think otherwise. I can usually understand other people's viewpoints but I struggle with Royalists, it just seems so ridiculously outdated and undemocratic.
