AIBU - vegan dinner party guest EATING FISH

isitginoclock · 13/05/2016 20:06

We're throwing a dinner party. I've just excused myself to the loo to write this because I'm FUMING!! One of our guests has recently become a vegan. I spent bloody ages making her a mushroom pate for starter which she happily tucked into whilst we ate our salmon tartare. She then asked if she could try some salmon.

Wtf?!?!

I've bought loads of different stuff for her to eat and spent all frigging day cooking it. Why do I bother?!

I was not impressed to see the "vegetarian" mum I had carefully catered for at a dinner party scoffing a dirty hot dog at the school fair. Didn't pursue that friendship - tedious hypocrite.

Have an old friend who's a proper proper vegetarian. No fish. No leather. Yes it's a pain but genuine and done whole heartedly and respect her for it. She gets very cross with fake veggies.

squidgyapple · 13/05/2016 21:01

YANBU - I know a couple of very self-righteous vegetarians ..who eat fish

Newtoallthissh1t · 13/05/2016 21:01

You went to all the trouble of hosting a dinner party and making seperate meals for the 'fake vegan' with babies to look after as well! Your amaze balls and fake began should be shot and served at the next party! (Jokes - obvs 😂)

GirlOverboard · 13/05/2016 21:01

That's ridiculous. I'm a vegetarian and I always thought the whole 'I'm a vegetarian but I eat fish/chicken' thing was ridiculous, but this is a whole different level. Don't label yourself as a vegan (or vegetarian) if you're not one. Just say 'I don't eat meat, eggs or dairy'. Simple.

Newtoallthissh1t · 13/05/2016 21:02

Vegan - not began!
Must have been my vegan sausage fingers!

LadyAntonella · 13/05/2016 21:02

Exactly dinosaur! I used to prefer to eat veggie, so I had a veggie-where-it-doesn't-inconvenience-other-people policy. So I would order veggie at a restaurant, cook veggie for myself and choose veggie off a buffet, but I knew I was NOT a real veggie, so when friends were cooking for me I just ate what everyone else did. Different if you are a committed veggie / vegan of course.

Didactylos · 13/05/2016 21:03

Im sure its on the Utah baby name list....
but really, wouldn't you convert Vegan to Megan as the tattoo and then it would be a bit more explicable?

LunaLoveg00d · 13/05/2016 21:05

If she's eating fish, she's not a vegan.

Baboooshka · 13/05/2016 21:05

I had a friend like this. She came to a dinner party at my flat, ate some of the vegan dish I'd bought, got hammered and started stealing rare roast beef from other people's plates. There was meat juice on her chin! When vegans snap... One more glass of wine and she might have bitten off someone's arm.

Ginkypig · 13/05/2016 21:06

I tend to use the term non meat eater as I occasionally eat fish so I'm not a vegetarian.

The amount of people who have no idea about the term pescatarian and I then have to explain it means it's just easier to say in one sentence I don't eat meat and only occasionally have fish!

Why would you say vegan and have fish though!

StealthPolarBear · 13/05/2016 21:08

I don't eat fish but can kind of see the argument

GarlicShake · 13/05/2016 21:09

wouldn't you convert Vegan to Megan as the tattoo?

Is a Megan somebody who says they only eat plants but doesn't mind the odd bit of meat?

LunaLoveg00d · 13/05/2016 21:10

I quite fancy being a kangatarian.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kangaroo_meat#Kangatarianism

squoosh · 13/05/2016 21:11

I could understand a vegan lapsing and having a sneaky spoon of custard. But fish? Nah.

carabos · 13/05/2016 21:11

My pescatarian friend is adamant she's a vegetarian. She's pretty militant about animal rights but is a bit Hmm when people call her on her fish-eating. I don't understand it, but as others have said, it seems to be quite common for people who just don't eat red meat to describe themselves as veggie.

GarlicShake · 13/05/2016 21:11

I could do that, Luna! If it would stop my vegan friends spamming my FB feed with tragic pictures of dead animals.

carabos · 13/05/2016 21:12

But fish is meat gingky Confused.

randomsabreuse · 13/05/2016 21:20

Maybe she's dairy and egg intolerant... (being charitable)... only way I can find stuff in supermarkets as DD is intolerant to both [and soya] so get a vegan sandwich, check for soya and obtain some meat/fish separately.

Hate how much a pain I am to cater for but hate the vomming more!

GeezAJammyPeece · 13/05/2016 21:22

YY to the toddler talk and the steak!

I have no problems tweaking or changing menu plans to accommodate someone's dieterary choices or requirements, I actively enjoy the challenge but this would fuck me the fuck off. Stupid cow. Add her name to the PETA mailing list and they'll bombard her with posters and campaigns on how to be a real vegan I once requested free stickers (they were free) and now can't get rid of them, maybe they should think about all the blooming trees they are killing whilst telling us to save animals

I work for a large catering company, our nutritionist & menu planning team are of the opinion that fish is an acceptable offering for the vegetarian option. This also Fs me TFO. Angry

But as they also disallow the addition of half a glacé cherry atop your empire biscuits because they are unhealthy, I have little respect for their ideas anyway.

Didactylos · 13/05/2016 21:23

I like that idea Garlic;

like a Wendy - we would all know what it means when you've been Meganed

HowBadIsThisPlease · 13/05/2016 21:24

Lots of "vegans" do this. It is annoying but I don't blame them exactly, because for some people veganism basically feels like malnourishment (and kind of is). (Not all. If you are vegan and tell me that you are very well, I believe you. However it is my experience that some human bodies genuinely can't cope happily with veganism).

It's really hard to be faced with nutrients that your body desperately needs, and has for a while, and deny yourself them. Especially if you have had a glass of wine which has relaxed your inhibitions.

The irony (ha! Iron! ha! get it!) is that when you cook mixed vegan / veggie / pesce / omni for a variety of guests, it's the non-vegans who are very interested in your delightful vegan food, because they are generally well enough nourished that the cheese and the fish aren't deafeningly screaming to them, as they do to the vegan. You make a half-arsed attempt to police the vegan food, making sure there is enough for the vegan, but then give up when you hear a grunting noise and lift the table cloth to discover the vegan rolling about under the table in a carnal toothy embrace with a whole leg of lamb, bathed in gravy.

Waltermittythesequel · 13/05/2016 21:25

How can people call themselves vegan or veggie when they eat fish??

I mean; dead fish are ok but dead cows are off limits? It literally makes no sense.

Your friend is a pain in the arse.

GirlOverboard · 13/05/2016 21:29

A vegetarian is someone who doesn't eat bits of dead animals, so as long they don't eat their leather handbag they're still a 'proper proper' vegetarian. Vegans are the ones who don't eat or use animal products.

I wear leather and I'm a very strict vegetarian (e.g. checking every dessert I buy to make sure it doesn't contain gelatin). There's so many foods you'd think would be vegetarian but aren't. But yeah, wearing leather doesn't make someone less of a vegetarian.

Lweji · 13/05/2016 21:31

OP, at the end of the meal offer a prayer for the suffering that poor salmon endured.
Just to drive the point home.

Having said that, plants also produce distress molecules. Which is why I'm reluctant to eat greens.
Unlike fruit, which is meant by the plant to be eaten.

Geepee71 · 13/05/2016 21:33

Is the wine vegan? Just to really wind the fake vegan up?
