What's the best compliment you've ever received?

My personal favourite ever has been "You've got a nice nose. Like Boris Becker".

Fenella, yours should be in a book. Sobbing. Sad

My favourite was when I was young and a fella who quite obviously fancied me told me I was "an enigma." I mean, I think it was meant in a positive way. Grin

notsmartenough · 12/05/2016 17:20

Many years ago I was asked:
"Did anyone ever tell you that you have beautiful knees?"

(The answer to that was no).

n0ne · 12/05/2016 17:22

One time I was in a fairly busy pub in a train station with some mates (2 very pretty girls), and this random bloke came up to me and said I was the most beautiful girl in the place. Made me feel a million bucks as it wasn't long after my xhb had left me. Although I still wonder if he did it for a dare Hmm

chickenowner · 12/05/2016 17:23

Many years ago, when I was in my last 20s, I was in a pub in central London. A man walked up to me and gave me a balloon! He said 'I decided to give this balloon to the prettiest girl in the pub, so here, it's for you!'

And the funny thing was, I was with 2 much taller, slimmer friends who clearly thought they were prettier than me!! Haa!!

Iseesheep · 12/05/2016 17:26

I was coming up to 40 and in a bar/restaurant with my two kids and husband in a North American ski resort which was full of beautiful young people. We'd been there about an hour or so when a guy, about 25, came over to our table and said "excuse me, I hope I don't offend you, but had to tell you that we (pointing to a big group of men and women) all agree you're a ten out of ten. You're beautiful and a lovely mom". I looked over to where he was pointing and they all raised their glasses, girls included! I did the typical English thing of going bright red and saying sod all then went from feeling a bit creeped out that they'd been watching me to feeling chuffed to buggery. I've stuck with the chuffed feeling.

Whitelisbon · 12/05/2016 17:56

From dds friend (13), "I wish my mum was like you, you're just amazing".

From dh, I was 8 months pregnant with twins and had a rotten cold, streaming eyes, bright red nose, the lot. We had a family meal to go to, I had no clothes that fitted, and I told dh that I felt like a beached whale and looked worse. He told me that I was the most beautiful whale he'd ever seen, and I lit up his whole world (possibly rudolph style, but I didn't ask!). He's not one for compliments, so that meant the world to me.

redexpat · 12/05/2016 18:07

An ex told me I had a cracking pair of legs.
Someone I just met told me that it wasn't a come on, but that I had beautiful eyes. I never saw him again.
A couple of people have exclaimed you're really nice! As if this was a surprise. I'm always a bit Hmm

sparechange · 12/05/2016 18:11

My doctor who told me I have 'a beautiful cervix' during a smear test!
Took years for DH to top that one...

BarbaraManatee · 12/05/2016 18:17

DS, then aged 4, on seeing me dressed up for a funeral & asking DH to come give me his opinion: "I think daddy's going to say "are you a new lady?"" Grin

MatildaTheCat · 12/05/2016 18:21

In supermarket queue I was tapped on the shoulder by the elderly woman behind me who said in a thick Scotish accent, 'I hope you won't mind me saying this but you've got a lovely wee bum.' Grin

It was just before my 50th birthday and no, I didn't mind. Wink

MatildaTheCat · 12/05/2016 18:21

Scottish. Autocorrect gone wrong.

TooGood2BeFalse · 12/05/2016 18:22

After a rough day with my son who was poorly and I'd had a miscarriage the day before, my husband (who is not a man of great tact or elegance)out of nowhere just said 'You are the very best mummy. If everyone had a mother like you, no one would be fucked up.'

Sounds cheesy and it wasn't exactly Shakespeare but it meant the absolute world to me that day and I've never forgotten it.

MrsDeathOfRats · 12/05/2016 18:23

My Dd said the sweetest thing to me a month of so back.

'You know your beautiful mummy. Am I as beautiful as you mummy?'
My heart swelled a little that day Smile

TooGood2BeFalse · 12/05/2016 18:24

Oh and sparechange my doctor says I have 'gorgeous ovaries'..Grin

AccordingtoMe · 12/05/2016 18:27

My teenage daughter (now 24) told me once that all of her friends thought I was really cool, massive compliment to me and she was pleased too Grin

KayTee87 · 12/05/2016 18:28

Probably not my favourite but definitely the most recent. I'm 7 months pregnant and a guy a couple of years younger than me said to me in work today 'you look lovely by the way' Smile

Strokethefurrywall · 12/05/2016 18:28

Ones that stick:

From a lovely ex-boyfriend when we first started dating - "You remind me of Mary from There's Something About Mary - there's just something about you Stroke".

From random lad in his early 20's wearing a hoodie on on a bmx bike as I was walking down the road, cycled past me, then turned around and I could sense him at my side. I had my earphones in and thought he was pestering for a ciggie so I kind of rolled my eyes and pulled my earphone out - he said "I'm sorry to stop you but I thought you should know that you're really beautiful!" and then he rode off - put a smile on my face all day, bless him.

DS1 (when he was 2) - "I luff you mummy, you're my favourite mummy. (pats left boob) I luff you too boobies."

UmbongoUnchained · 12/05/2016 18:29

"You look like someone I could eat cheese with,"

I am 🙂

RosyfingeredDawn · 12/05/2016 18:44

This will definitely out me. When I was on my early twenties at a party a v posh guy (I think he was a broker or something) approached me and said in a v upper class accent " I've clocked you a few times this evening and I think you're fucking cool!"
My friends went on about that for ages afterwards.

I remember a girl I worked with in a supermarket whilst at college. I saw her soon after we left she liked at me in awe and said " I always thought you could do anything". I think of that now and wish I had done more.

WhatALoadOfOldBollocks · 12/05/2016 18:45

Regarding compliments, am I the only one who prefers to get ones based on my personality or intellect than my beauty? It's just that looks fade and if they were the only compliments I ever got it all feels a bit shallow IYKWIM.

KayTee87 · 12/05/2016 18:48

whataload unfortunately most people don't compliment females on things like this, it usually is looks based. Nothing wrong with enjoying any type of compliment you're lucky enough to to receive though :)

CantWaitForWarmWeather · 12/05/2016 18:53

This guy I met at college... "When I walked in to the library I couldn't stop looking at your beautiful smile" Smile He is lovely.

Said by a few people, along the lines of... "Your eyelashes are gorgeous. Have you got false ones on?"
Me: "No, just mascara"
"Wow they are really long!"

Janey50 · 12/05/2016 19:05

From my DP of 3 and a bit years; 'Being apart from you for one night feels like a month'.

SeaEagleFeather · 12/05/2016 19:05

"fuck, she can ride like fucking banshee"

said by two R1 riders.

I will treasure that one forever.

mumoseven · 12/05/2016 19:06

Aw my dd3 once gave me a birthday card that said 'happy birthday mum you are younger and much pritter than Madonna'
I still have it somewhere.
