What's the best compliment you've ever received?

My personal favourite ever has been "You've got a nice nose. Like Boris Becker".

'You make a room light up'

HighDataUsage · 12/05/2016 13:03

I bought a new outfit for a wedding my kids were saying how beautiful Smile I looked and then followed it with why can't you look like that all the time!
Shock

Said to me completely in earnest by a work colleague " you know Was, I have known a lot of people over the years who claimed they didn't give a flip about what other people thought of their appearance - but in your case it's really true isn't it?"

:)

velourvoyageur · 12/05/2016 13:05

I've had 'poised' quite a bit. I like that because I see myself as a clumsy bumbling creature who's out of it most of the time. Even if it's probs a polite way of saying 'uptight' Wink

An ex: your eyes are really well spaced, must be because of your big nose. Grin i still like that one

Someone once said to me 'Where do you get your strength? You're so strong' (mentally, I don't lift!)

I was tempted to reply 'From my mother' but instead I kept the compliment to myself.

maz210 · 12/05/2016 13:22

"Your hair's got sparkles in it Mummy!"

Referring to my white hairs growing through Grin

caitlinohara · 12/05/2016 13:23

An ex-friend, when we were having a massive row, once called me uncompromising. She didn't actually mean it in a nice way but I was secretly quite pleased because i have always thought of myself as a bit of a pushover. Grin

BoxofSnails · 12/05/2016 13:23

Patient on being discharged- "I wish I could see you all the time"- so touched I had a tear in my eye.

sallysparrow157 · 12/05/2016 13:28

I had one recently at work, part of my job is to go out to other workplaces and deliver teaching/update sessions. One of the attendees came over to me at the end of the session and said 'thanks for coming, that was so much better than I expected it to be, I'm glad I came now!'
Not sure whether to be complimented that I exceeded her expectations or insulted that her expectation was that the day would be a crappy waste of time!!

CruCru · 12/05/2016 13:30

A few months ago, my son said that I was really nice and that everyone liked me. It brightened my day as I'd been feeling a bit blue.

DaisyAdair · 12/05/2016 13:31

My DD's (teenage) friend once said to me "You always know the right thing to do" - that meant a lot to me because I suffer from anxiety and am constantly afraid I'm making the wrong decision.

WhatALoadOfOldBollocks · 12/05/2016 13:32

Compliments about my appearance are obviously nice, but I'm more than just my shell so I really value ones that are about my brain, such as...

"You're intelligent and resourceful, and can acheive anything you set set your mind to"
"You're the most mentally sorted person I know"

Both given by men.

GinIsIn · 12/05/2016 13:34

You were my sunshine. It was the last thing my dad said to me when he was dying.

SukeyTakeItOffAgain · 12/05/2016 13:39

I can't remember the exact words, but DH and I were staying in a chalet when we were skiing and were sharing with people we didn't know. By the end of the week we were friends and one of them said something about us spreading warmth and making people feel great when we were around them. I know I've changed since then, and when I catch myself thinking awful thoughts, I try and remember that, and be that young woman again.

ceebie · 12/05/2016 13:48

A business client said I was like a terrier. Not said to me, but to colleagues and others in a meeting. I think it was meant as a compliment - i.e. that I will keep going until I get a result.

CryHavoc · 12/05/2016 13:48

My daughter has always been very confident to be with other people, and has never been a clingy child. She spends lots of time with my PILs - weeks away, weekends at their house, that sort of thing.

She's 8 now, and a few weeks ago I was discussing her confidence with my MIL and joked that it might be nice if she pretended to miss me sometimes. MIL scoffed and said, 'She might like staying with us, but that child lights up when you come into the room.'

On the flip side, my husband's go to compliment if I ask how I look is 'You'll do for me.'

ceebie · 12/05/2016 13:50

I dressed up to go out one evening (black high heel boots, black cardi, make-up on for a change). DS (aged 3) said I looked like a pirate. I'm not sure whether it was a compliment or not, it certainly hadn't been the look I was going for.

DownUnderBound · 12/05/2016 13:50

Once I was sat in a pub and a man tapped me on the arm, I moved and said sorry, assuming I was in the way, bur he leant over and whispered 'you are so fucking beautiful' ......and it made my bloody day that did Smile

honeylulu · 12/05/2016 13:56

From a family friend: "If I'd had a daughter I'd have wanted her to be just like you". A real confidence booster as my own parents seem to think I'm a waste of space.

Also friend's 16 year old son described me as "the hot one" of her mates. I think I look all right but I'd assumed only to my own generation (I'm nearly 42) and that too a teenager I just look like someone's old mum. Apparently not always!

DontBuyANewMumCuntingDailyMail · 12/05/2016 13:57

Asking DH if he had any preference over my boobs or bum
"I don't think of you as a collection of body parts; I just think of you as a whole."

Unfortunately I latched onto the "hole" comment and now we say it to each other all the time. Grin

This weekend, bending over wearing denim shorts "Oh it's like the money saving supermarket ad... Not in a bad way..."
Hmmm......

But he says many lovely heartfelt things so it's easy to laugh the bad ones off!!! Grin

GinaBambino · 12/05/2016 14:05

Had one the other day from a builder - I'm 36 weeks pregnant so looking like a complete hormonal mess who cannot be arsed with hair or make up etc.
He walked past me and said 'ooh you're looking blooming lovely young lady, hope all goes well' - not so much a compliment but made my day.

DP always gives back handed compliments - watching OBEM and there was a woman on there with a humongous belly (i think she was having twins) and i turned to him and said 'goodness do you think I'll get that big' he looked at me all innocently and said 'no babe, you've hardly put any weight on your face' he got a slap! he does say lovely things sometimes, but right now i can't think of any.
