Babies in travel systems

Excusemeforpostinghere · 11/05/2016 08:03

Am I bu that I just get the rage when I see babies in carseats clunked to the pram?

Am I being a judgypants?

Fair enough on the nip in & out jobs like school run.

But supermarket? Theme park? National trust gardens? Running? Town? Zoo? Places were the child is likely going to have been in that carseat for a few hours!

They've already been in it for the car journey. I bet likely, some will only be out of them all day for feeding time.

I watched holiday supersavers last night and the baby did the walk to supermarket, around supermarket and walk nack home again in the flippin carseat!

I just want to go up to them and tell them to stop being lazy and think of their child's spine development.

2nd car seats kill babies it's a well known fact not to buy 2nd hand along with the 2hr rule and buying good quailty seat's you should use the 9 months your pregnant to learn these things its basic baby care Wink

PregnantAndEngaged · 11/05/2016 09:08

Can tell there's a lot of middle class people on here where £800-1000 on a pram is nothing. To me that is absolutely ludicrous money to spend on a buggy. I earn £1000 in a bloody month.

HandbagFan · 11/05/2016 09:10

YABU but as you don't care if you're being judgy (despite feeling the need to write a post about it) then it's not worth discussing it with you.

PaulAnkaTheDog · 11/05/2016 09:10

Jeezo Lily you sound so sanctimonious and snooty.

LilySnape · 11/05/2016 09:11

actually £800-£1000 is ridiculous for something your going to use for 2 yrs max anything more than £500 on a system is useless a good safe car seat like a Maxi cosi or Cybex is about £300 and a normal amount for a seat that actually protects

SerenityReynolds · 11/05/2016 09:12

YABU. It is really none of your business. DD1 screamed blue murder in the carrycot from about 15 weeks and was too young for the pushchair attachment. It was the height of summer and we both got hot and bothered using the sling. So how was I supposed to leave the house without using the car seat in your great wisdom? And she was never in it for 2 hours at a time, but you wouldn't have known that if you judged me saw me out and about.

DD2 OTOH, still manages fine in the carrycot at 5+ months. It depends on the baby. There's nothing wrong with using a car seat attachment sensibly.

Only1scoop · 11/05/2016 09:12

Oh Lily and her 9 months of studying 'basic baby care'
Grin

NerrSnerr · 11/05/2016 09:13

You don't need to spend £800-1000 for a pram. We got a Gracco travel system for £300 in the sale which had car seat, carry cot and pushchair seat. 21 months later we still use it and it will last for a second child.

GreenTomatoJam · 11/05/2016 09:13

Fuck that Pregnant - there are other options than a grand on a pram (I've never done that - I think I've spent about 60 quid on 2 buggies, and sold them on!), or travel systems

Seems like there's plenty of sanctimonious and snooty to go around.

Owllady · 11/05/2016 09:15

Is there any evidence to suggest it causes curvature of the spine? Confused

icebearforpresident · 11/05/2016 09:16

You see the baby in a car seat for a few minutes and assume it's been in there for hours? Dc2 is 5 months always falls asleep in the car and is crabit as hell if she gets woken. If we go into town for a days shopping we'll put the car seat onto the pram. However, being well aware of the 2 hour rule we make sure we stop for a coffee or somewhere suitable to get her out for at least half an hour at a time.

We also need a stroller for our 2 year old so in the boot of the car will have the pram frame, the stroller and will need room to get the weekly shop home. I drive a Renault megane how the hell am I meant to get the pram seat in there as well? Boot isn't that big!

YABU for assuming parents using the car seat on a travel system are lazy.

RedToothBrush · 11/05/2016 09:18

Surely the fact that there are lieflat carseats on the market means that the upright ones are a problem

Will you go and find the price for one of them and then post it here then please?

I looked at them. They were in the region of a grand.

Money obviously grows on trees.

jassey just buy a pram suitable from birth in the 1st place?

With this magic money? Or the hindsight of when you find that the pram that WAS suitable from birth in the first place is not to needs of your child 2 months down the line?

Are you supposed to buy this mythical pram after your baby has been born and you have had time to consult with them as to what they would like?

You may as well be talking about the virtues of unicorns to the majority of people.

How exactly is this thread in anyway helpful or supportive of parents? Or is it just an opportunity for you to have a good bitch?

Excusemeforpostinghere · 11/05/2016 09:18

People need educating on the risks. I'm not going to go up to anyone and tell them so to their face, but this threas may prompt people to do some research of their own, and in the future be mindful of how long their child is put in the carseat.

I don't like the infant carseat carrier one pippa combi or extended ones are safer.

I do know what the saying not my monkeys means. It just has no place in this thread.

There are many perfectly good pushchairs/prams for less than £200. The bugaboo was an example, I also mentioned the nipper. A significantly cheaper pushchair, but no one seemed to pick up on that one?

M&p sola, armadillo also come to mind. Good budget from birth prams

"car seats and supposed to be used for naps!"

They may not be designed for the Esmerelda, but since 99% of babies small enough to fit in the kind we are discussing, I'd say that's a moot point, wouldn't you? Or are you seriously suggesting that babies should be woken immediately upon ending the car journey and wrestled into a lie-flat carry cot, even for the shortest trip to the supermarket? Really?

Some people value sleep over a vague, unspecified risk to the spine.

EsmeraldaEllaBella · 11/05/2016 09:20

lily I completely agree. You can never know if a 2nd hand car seat has been in a crash, unless given by someone you trust.

op I think safety wise lie flat car seats haven't been well received? From what I've seen anyway

Yabu for posting her btw Wink

EsmeraldaEllaBella · 11/05/2016 09:20

Ffs, I mean here not her!

TheEagle · 11/05/2016 09:21

my nephew couldn't poo in his due to the angle - are you serious?!!

All 3 of my children adore pooing in the car.

YABU OP, you have no idea of other people's circumstances.

Ugh so many judgy people on this thread!

DeadGood · 11/05/2016 09:21

"I also had a "clingy" baby so I just carried her everywhere, no big deal"

Wow I didn't even notice this part of your message before... Wish I hadn't bothered replying to you now

Excusemeforpostinghere · 11/05/2016 09:21

I agree with lily you should be spending more on the carseat than the pushchair.

I would never in my life buy a pram for £1000. In fact I'd never buy a new pram.

However I would never buy a
2nd hand carseat

Merinocool · 11/05/2016 09:21

Yabu. I sometimes use the car seat to go round the supermarket, it takes 5 mins to drive there and not long to do the shopping and get back home, I can't believe people could actually be judging me for this? My baby mainly used the carrycot from birth only used the car seat for quick things like popping into the shop, post office, cafe etc. I have the smallest of boots, if I put the pram in there plus carrycot I have no room for the shopping so seeing as I'm there and back in less than an hour I don't take the carrycot to allow for things to go in the boot, this makes sense to me.

My baby spent lots of time in the carrycot, now in the main pram seat, she also spends time in the sling. You can't possibly know how long that baby has been in it for or the reasons why so it's very unfair to start judging people for it.

TheEagle · 11/05/2016 09:22

Just to clarify - my 3 poo in their nappies in their car seats not just freely in the car Grin

EsmeraldaEllaBella · 11/05/2016 09:22

dead haha I used to wake DD up but soon learnt to leave sleeping babies lie! But the poster I was referring to said she would put lo in for a nap, bit different to them falling asleep on a journey

DeadGood · 11/05/2016 09:23

"Personally I think it's crazy... The few times I tried to carry him in the car seat it was heavy, I kept bumping it into things/my legs, and it was too tempting to plonk things on him like a shopping basket.

To my mind, I'd much prefer to carry 4kg of warm baby than 10 of awkward car seat - people seem to be making their lives more difficult by doing it - but to each their own."

GreenTomatoJam you are misunderstanding. People buy attachments so that they can clip the car seat onto the frame of their travel system. Hence the name.

EsmeraldaEllaBella · 11/05/2016 09:23

dead I should clarify - I carried her everywhere because she would cry in pram I I don't have a travel system or a sling. I just did what I had to do, that's what I meant by that. Sorry if I offended
