Babies in travel systems

Excusemeforpostinghere · 11/05/2016 08:03

Am I bu that I just get the rage when I see babies in carseats clunked to the pram?

Am I being a judgypants?

Fair enough on the nip in & out jobs like school run.

But supermarket? Theme park? National trust gardens? Running? Town? Zoo? Places were the child is likely going to have been in that carseat for a few hours!

They've already been in it for the car journey. I bet likely, some will only be out of them all day for feeding time.

I watched holiday supersavers last night and the baby did the walk to supermarket, around supermarket and walk nack home again in the flippin carseat!

I just want to go up to them and tell them to stop being lazy and think of their child's spine development.

Imo they are for the car only hence the name. You can buy carrycots wich go in the car I had one for ds1 and with reclining back rests I had one for ds1 and ds2 as he had reflux and cmpi. It restricts their breathing

OhIfIMust · 11/05/2016 20:31

YABU. Whenever I took my 11 week prem out for a short walk / to the shops in the winter he was born he went in the car seat attachment because it kept him in a good position for his reflux, and also meant he was warmer with s couple of blankets than in the standard carrycot.

FutureGadgetsLab · 11/05/2016 20:33

Carrycots are the things I don't get. Why not just get a pram suitable from birth?

squizita · 11/05/2016 20:38

Future do you mean the pram attachment that goes on the wheel base? Hmm So you don't have to buy a pram THEN a pushchair? Ours (mothercare expedior) is the same bassinet - it clicks into a seat shape from a flat shape.

I would think buying 2 things when nowadays 1 safely does tge job to be wasteful and silly unless someone's rolling in cash.

ICanTuckMyBoobsInMyPockets · 11/05/2016 20:38

How the frigg are you supposed to go anywhere if you have to lift baby out of the car seat every 30 minutes?

Parch14 · 11/05/2016 20:41

Yabu
If you don't like them, don't get one for your child but it's not fair to judge if you don't know the parents reason for having one.

FutureGadgetsLab · 11/05/2016 20:43

Squizita I mean the separate cots that click on. I had an oyster 2 which clicks into a seat but had a separate carrycot if you wanted one. Why would you? Confused

SlapACatFuckADuck · 11/05/2016 20:45

I've only ever brought one that comes with a pushchair carrycots look so much comfier for a baby then a seat unit or car seat.

Amummyatlast · 11/05/2016 20:53

future the pushchair seat for mine wasn't flat enough for a newborn, so we had separate carrycot attachment that clicked on for when she was a very little baby. It doubled as our Moses basket and was the only thing she would sleep in for the first 6 weeks or so.

FutureGadgetsLab · 11/05/2016 20:54

Mummy I didn't think of that it could be used as a Moses basket. I had a pram from birth but never had it totally flat because he had reflux.

soundsystem · 11/05/2016 20:59

YA probably BU.

I actually didn't know they shouldn't be used in the way you describe. I see it a lot and most other people o know who had babies at he same time as us used travel systems and it didn't occur to me to judge (we didn't have one, because we don't have a car so no need for a car seat).

SlapACatFuckADuck · 11/05/2016 21:14

future some of them can. The bebecar one that I have has a moses basket mattress and once the hood is removed can be used a carrycot and they even sell a stand for it.

SquedgieBeckenheim · 11/05/2016 21:14

I don't think many people know the risks with long term car seat use, I only know because DD was prem and so had to do a car seat test to make sure her oxygen levels didn't drop too low. For parents who have healthy full term babies, they don't have to do this and aren't necessarily told it's a risk. Therefore I don't judge.
Personally, even without knowing the risks I would avoid leaving baby in car seat for long as I think they look so uncomfortable!

LittleNelle · 11/05/2016 21:16

What is the problem with them being in a curved back position? I used a sling a lot when mine were babies so they were rarely lying flat - in a sling they are curled up too.

FutureGadgetsLab · 11/05/2016 21:22

That's actually a good idea! I thought they were just extras solely for the pram, another way to make parents pay more.

SlapACatFuckADuck · 11/05/2016 21:23

little it can damage their spine and also the position lowers oxygen levels some babies have died from being in them and not being able to breath properly

AllTheDwarves · 11/05/2016 21:26

There are worse offences than the travel system - my real bugbear is people chavs who push their toddlers around in those bloody smart trikes. Not just a spin around the block. Like a full round the shops job. Small children falling asleep in them and hanging over the sides. So dangerous.

SlapACatFuckADuck · 11/05/2016 21:26

Future This one also can go in the car as a lie flat seat, you buy a seatbelt for it and a impact cushion that goes in it and it clips in (I used my DS's bebecar carrycot in the car and just lifted it out onto the pram) They also rock or are static. It's a really good thing and as I said up thread the back rest sits up so if you've a colicky baby like my DS2 I just used two rolled up blankets and he was up right more and much happier and his airways weren't compromised

LittleNelle · 11/05/2016 21:33

Why does it damage their spine in a car seat and not in a sling?

Drbint · 11/05/2016 21:35

Mind your own fucking business.

And no, I didn't use one.

Legendofthephoenix · 11/05/2016 21:35

I think car seat looks so unatractive on a pram and my car seat didn't have a hood. We bought a carry cot for the pram and he hated it we ended calling it a tomb. I couldn't wait till he got a bit bigger and he could fit properly into a pram.

fuctifino · 11/05/2016 21:37

I haven't RT(whole)FT but I thought the risk was to do with SIDS, not the spine curvature.

I had a travel system but hated the way baby seemed to be practically folded in half in the car seat, so used to put her in the carry cot attachment.
If I was to have another child, I wouldn't entertain a travel system.

SlapACatFuckADuck · 11/05/2016 21:40

little I think (not sure) it's to do with the positioning like how they're shaped they're kind of bent in a bit of a c shape it can cause their spine to misshape

Lorraine46 · 11/05/2016 21:40

This is ridiculous!!! Used these travel systems with both my babies and they are now both strapping 16 and 11 year olds....with no back problems!! You have no right to judge people like this.....how about judging something like people with babies out and about at 10.30pm and later...now that is something to get worked up about. Get a life

FutureGadgetsLab · 11/05/2016 21:41

Slap what's it called? My DS is too big now but I'd like to have it on the radar for any other children
