To think summer is a miserable time for fat people?

HackerFucker22 · 06/05/2016 14:31

Caveat by saying immediately I am a good 2st (actually closer to 3st!!) overweight so this isn't a fat bashing thread.

First few proper sunny days and I am frantically trying to find weather appropriate clothes that don't make me look like a whale.

I am hot and sweaty

I am stressed as I have 3 weddings need 2 outfits and I can't find a damn thing.

I went out to buy some new tops today and came back with baggy, shapeless t-shirts.

I am dreading the next few months.

"Is chub rub a modern phenomenon?
You never heard of it 20 years ago.
There weren't any creams or lotions for it, because there wasn't a need."

you never heard about it 20 years ago because we were all embarrassed to talk about it and didn't have the internet to learn from the fantastic fat fashion queens.

I absolutely had it as a skinny (size 8) teen and missed out on all kinda fabulous dresses because of it. Now as a fat 30-odd year old I'm far happier in my skin because I can wear dresses without chaffing my thighs to ribbons and blood.

I currently use antiperspirant deodorant and then lanocaine or baby powder on top once it has dried. Antiperspirant was a revalation - so obvious when I thought about it.

Disclaimer
I'm size 22 and have bought a maxi dress for a Sumer wedding Confused

Also when I was young and suffered from chub rub (age50 now) I used baking powder which was a traditional remedy plus I remember older ladies wearing cotton bloomers. Which a department store in my town still stock Wink

IonaNE · 06/05/2016 21:31

Not in the UK. In countries where it goes above 38 Celsius, yes.

PlaymobilPirate · 06/05/2016 21:44

I hate the summer and I hate holidays abroad. I'm a short arsed 16 with 34hh books so not the easiest to dress but... I also have lymphedema which means that my feet and legs swell horribly, especially in the summer and I can't wear support socks with sandals 😢

ozymandiusking · 06/05/2016 21:50

There are lots of maxi dresses on Marisota. Certainly worth a look.

IonaNE · 06/05/2016 22:05

Surprised at the number of posts that say posters are short and so can't wear maxi dresses/wide-leg trousers because they drag on the floor. Clothes alterations? (I actually tend to do this kind of thing myself, by hand - it's not that hard to cut and hem something...)

susurration · 06/05/2016 22:05

a pair of cotton shorts under any dress or skirt is a god send for thigh chafing. I even wore them on my wedding day.

SandyAndy · 06/05/2016 22:09

I am a bit late to this thread but I have all of the problems you describe with being overweight in hot weather.
Maverick you were way upthread but I read your post and thought 'that's me!' I get the awful heavy sweating in the crotch area, I often feel very wet down thereBlush and the first thing I do when I get home on a hot day is put fresh knickers and panty liner on (sorry everyone tmi)
I have just ordered that odabam mentioned and am going to be brave and try it down below!! Got to be worth a try.

buckingfrolicks · 06/05/2016 22:13

I'm a size 20. I wear longish shorts and strap py tops. I don't give a shite if people judge me. I love summer because of how light I feel with no heavy boots heavy jumper heavy coat

re chub rub, a phrase introduced to me by this lovely thread, well I have suffered from this for donkeys years and suffered in silence out of shame as I thought I was the only person in the world who had it. It isn't new for fucks sake. What's new is that I can talk about it

I've never worn a maxi but may well do this summer out of sheer solidarity with those wonderful fat women most of you clearly are.

ouryve · 06/05/2016 22:15

Iona - I'm not terribly short but I am short of leg and also clumsy. My left elbow is the reason why I no longer wear wide legged trousers. Maxi dresses accentuate all my dumpiness because all my weight is in my torso (and I have horrendous bingo wings, thanks to lousy connective tissue)

I used to rock a long, sheer skirt and baggy shirt tied at the waist, in my teens, when I was git skinny. Big 80s perm part of the look, of course.

TooOldForGlitter · 06/05/2016 22:28

I fondly remember the mid 00's look of layered full length 'gypsy' skirts worn with a low slung disc belt, a v neck vest top and a cardi hanging off your shoulders. Now that was a look for the fat woman. I may attempt a one woman crusade to bring it back.

Fluffyears · 06/05/2016 22:32

Honestly try bandelettes, best money I ever spent, just make sure you measure accurately to get the right size. Means your bits can breathe and they stay put all day (I have put them to the test on a work day). 20 minute walk to station, half hour commute, 15 minute walk on other end, 8 hours rushing round an office then the same journey in reverse. I adjusted them once when I went to the loo.

hollinhurst84 · 06/05/2016 22:36

TooOld - I have the gypsy skirt still. And a disc belt...

TooOldForGlitter · 06/05/2016 22:39

I still have the belt but the skirt succumbed to a...drinking injury 😂

hollinhurst84 · 06/05/2016 22:39

Oh and these are fab for thighs
V lightweight too

TooOldForGlitter · 06/05/2016 22:51

Oh I like the look of those. I used to wear cut off cycling shorts under skirts, and that was in my slim days Hmm

Maverick66 · 06/05/2016 23:03

Thank you sandy Andy glad to know I'm not on my own Flowers

marmiteloversunite · 06/05/2016 23:09

I couldn't get on with bandalettes but I do like Sloggi's long leg/short pants. They are going strong after three summers of wear and come in nude/white/ black.

TooOldForGlitter · 06/05/2016 23:11

Hadn't even thought about Sloggi!

MadisonAvenue · 06/05/2016 23:24

I'm a size 12 so not exactly fat but fucking hell, I hate hot weather. I will happily slap the next person who says how lovely it is. My upper arms are quite chunky (a family trait, thanks to my Dad's side) so I like to keep them covered. We've got a wedding to go to in August and I'm dreading having to find something to wear. I had to wear a jacket to one in a heatwave 3 years ago and was so uncomfortable. It doesn't help that I sweat a lot.
I was out walking the dog to beat the heat at 6.15am today because my hair was dripping wet at the back after walking 3 miles with him at 11 yesterday.

BillyDaveysDaughter · 06/05/2016 23:27

Oh. Hi, I have found my people Smile

I'm size 16-18, short, with huge beefy arms and broad shoulders like a retired wrestler and enormous knockers (G). I basically look shit in everything.

BillyDaveysDaughter · 06/05/2016 23:28

Forgot to say - I get the facial sweating with only the slightest increase in temperature...I hate upper lip sweat.

nothing to do with size ( I am not slim) but thnks I cant wear dress/skirt to do with my carer role.....(crawling arround a van issues) thats my answer

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 06/05/2016 23:44

I have never worn a maxi dress but I do worry that people who wear those strapless ones (elastic ruched bodice) are going to catch the hem , stand on it and expose their boobs to all and sundry.

I'm Perimenopausal too, the hot flushes just rage on up.
Bring it on Hmm

dailyfailrag · 06/05/2016 23:52

Bandalettes are lovely and breezy. It's nice to be able to walk around without having the extra layer of shorts.

Yours Clothing have legging shorts that look quite good though. A bit less ugly that the usual comfort shorts.
