To think that a cat doesn't actually need a name?

I've unintentionally adopted a stray kitten recently, who is lovely. I thought about giving him a name, but actually on reflection, it seems silly. He doesn't care or know the difference, and it just means that I have to call out something when letting him in. People have told me that I should name him, but it seems silly. He doesn't care. I would actually feel ridiculous calling out 'Harry' or whatever, from my doorstep. It's a cat. I don't have kids btw, so this doesn't impact any little people. (If I did, I'd let them decide on one). AIBU?

You are Jeremy Corbyn and I claim my copy of Socialist Worker

(JC does not go in for the Naming of Cats and has a cat called El Gato - Spanish for "cat")

Itslikeyoureadmymind · 01/05/2016 23:28

Of course you must name him! Even just for the comedy value. Our first cat is Gene. It suits him as he entertains the street by dancing in the window. (Next doors kids love him, several little old ladies stop and coo at him) but in actuality he's a bit of an aloof cunt. I love him dearly but he can be an asshole, cries loudly for attention just to ignore us. Hmm

Our other cat is the sweetest imaginable. Loves to sit with us, loves his tummy being tickled... Just a dote. He's a bit thick though. Used to hide in the veg basket at the sound of the Hoover. (No veg in it though)

His name is Stephen. Grin

Call him Mr Cat. It commands respect and also gives a hint of mystery.

DeriArms

I know some people with a cat called Catface. Surely there can't be 2 Catfaces in the world?

thebabydances

I fostered one who received the name Neko Chan

OP

He needs a name, how about Kevin? Kevin T Kitten esquire.

Gabilan · 02/05/2016 08:46

In my head he's now Mr Pushkin Cat. He introduces himself as "the name's Cat, Pushkin Cat." The OP however still shouts "puss puss " out the back door.

jellybeansprout · 02/05/2016 14:25

Waffle is indeed a good name for a cat.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 02/05/2016 14:28

Not as good as Pushkin thoughWink

Have you seen Breakfast At Tiffany's where Holly names the cat Cat?

Baileys, I invoked Breakfast At Tiffany's ages ago. No one seemed to notice. I'm not bitter though. Grin

OnlyLovers · 02/05/2016 14:39

PS Waffle is a fine cat name. Nothing to be embarrassed about, wizards!

We didn't really name our eldest cat, her name just evolved. She was a stray who moved in with us.

She went from That Little Cat to TLC to Tilly within about two weeks.

Itslikeyoureadmymind · 02/05/2016 20:31

ohmrbadger our Stephen is a ph. My DP said EXACTLY that when he named our cute adorable kitten. People find it hilarious.

bathsheba sorry for your loss.

Love Marshall the cat and Cooking Fat.

EleanorAbernathy · 02/05/2016 20:56

Our 10 cats have to have names, just so we know which one we're talking about!
Or we'd have conversations like "the grumpy short haired tabby and white one has fallen out with the tortie in the pink collar"
Instead of "Nikki has fallen out with Holly".

See - much easier! Grin

I think he looks like a Marvin.

wtffgs · 02/05/2016 21:06

Ghosty! Aww - Bernard is adorable Flowers

sepa · 03/05/2016 05:53

I couldn't cope with more than 2 cats. How do you get anything done with 5 or 10? I would forever be there stroking them or getting pissed off that they don't like my expensive cat food which is the only thing that solved my cats illness

I think Turbo is a good name for a cat!

Beefles · 05/05/2016 12:08

Just shout "DINNER!" When you call him in. He probably won't come to anything other than the thought of food if he's like my cats. We also make a kissy noise and say "puss puss" but really they only ever reacted to us tapping their food tin with a spoon/fork/fish knife.

QueenStromba · 05/05/2016 16:20

My cat definitely knows his name - I've tried tricking him by calling out something similar in the same tone of voice but he doesn't fall for it.

itslookingbright · 05/05/2016 16:23

My friends cat was simply called Cat (also her royal highness, goddess etc)

sianihedgehog · 05/05/2016 16:31

We named our cats, but one of them has just ended up called Kitten despite that. She's three now. Just call him Cat, or Puss Puss, or whatever you find yourself referring to him or addressing him as most often.

BertrandRussell · 05/05/2016 16:37

Ours have names, but are usually referred to as Cat and Other Cat.

Moistly · 05/05/2016 16:38

We ended up adopting a stray cat once. For ages he was simply, "Cat". I used to like calling him Cattington Smyth. Only in private though. ...

Moistly · 05/05/2016 16:39

Smythe. .....

Mcchickenbb41 · 05/05/2016 16:40

Funny enough when we were kids we had a pet rabbit. We couldn't all agree on the name so it was just called "the rabbit" lived very happily for 12 years !!
