To think that a cat doesn't actually need a name?

I've unintentionally adopted a stray kitten recently, who is lovely. I thought about giving him a name, but actually on reflection, it seems silly. He doesn't care or know the difference, and it just means that I have to call out something when letting him in. People have told me that I should name him, but it seems silly. He doesn't care. I would actually feel ridiculous calling out 'Harry' or whatever, from my doorstep. It's a cat. I don't have kids btw, so this doesn't impact any little people. (If I did, I'd let them decide on one). AIBU?

@OnlyLovers he is certainly getting fatter, and I do suspect that he has other admirers! (who no doubt have their own terms of endearment for him ;) )

call him fatcat then problem solved

ShatnersBassoon · 01/05/2016 16:16

Give the beast some dignity. What on earth will Aunty and Uncle (cattery owners) call their poor visiting nephew?

I can imagine the book, tucked in with all the other misery memoirs. "A Cat Called Puss" Sad

moussakka · 01/05/2016 16:17

@sepa I agree! But just I tried to sit and think of a name for him, and considered different ones, and eventually came to think it was all unnecessary, and more for me than him. When I speak about him to others I just refer to my cat. And anything I consider just seems artificial and silly. I'm not against it in principal (haha!), it just seems unnecessary.?!

haha @shatners but I don't think he cares! He has a lovely life and I care for him dearly!

more for me than him

Nowt wrong with that.

moussakka · 01/05/2016 16:18

It's like nothing seems to properly suit him.... and he's a cat after all, so the name would just be for my sake.

Actually I think this whole conversation is moot without a picture...

OnlyLovers · 01/05/2016 16:20

Look, give us a picture and let Mumsnet decide!

ShatnersBassoon · 01/05/2016 16:20

Yeah, he cares. Leeroy is my suggestion.

moussakka · 01/05/2016 16:21

Elvis, as one poster suggested actually, is quite fun. I think at some point along the line I considered it and thought well - Russel Brand's cat already has the best cat name (Morrissey), so I'm sure I can't top that for cat coolness :)

To the poster who requested a photo - I will try and find one!

Don't let any children name him. Our kitten is called waffle, and it'll be this gullible twat me who takes him to the vet and stating his name, or shouting for him outside at 2am.

Chewbecca · 01/05/2016 16:21

Totally agree with you.

DS gave our cat a daft name when we got her, he was 3 or so. We've never used it and always call her 'puss' but we like to experiment and call her anything in the 'calling' tone & she always answers.

DH is currently calling her 'shut up'. She doesn't give a fig.

moussakka · 01/05/2016 16:21

ok, now posters! :)

He's clearly a Jaffa

"IABU to think that a cat doesn't actually need a name? "

Shock

That is all!

BillSykesDog · 01/05/2016 16:25

One of my cats is a little sod for stealing your dinner. She has a name, but I'm pretty sure she thinks her name is 'fuck off cat'.

iamtheblackwizards · 01/05/2016 16:25

Simba, or marmalade.

notamummy10 · 01/05/2016 16:25

In that case, what will you write down as its name when you register the kitten at the vets? They usually need a name to create the patient's files. Also you'll need a name for the microchip (as you've already said you are a responsible pet owner).

Like humans, pets have their own identity and therefore need their own name. Also like humans, there are some ridiculous pet names out there. My next-door neighbour called one of her cats Tinkerbell and my other next-door neighbour called their cat Tapsy.

My cats are called Garfield and Tigger, in which their names are pretty self-explanatory.

pinkie1982 · 01/05/2016 16:26

I've got two. , one name has two syllables and one just one, both begin with the same letter. But they know Their names, call one the right cat comes in
