To think that a cat doesn't actually need a name?

I've unintentionally adopted a stray kitten recently, who is lovely. I thought about giving him a name, but actually on reflection, it seems silly. He doesn't care or know the difference, and it just means that I have to call out something when letting him in. People have told me that I should name him, but it seems silly. He doesn't care. I would actually feel ridiculous calling out 'Harry' or whatever, from my doorstep. It's a cat. I don't have kids btw, so this doesn't impact any little people. (If I did, I'd let them decide on one). AIBU?

Ha, this reminds me of dd renaming her cat every 2 weeks or so!

It was an indoor cat so luckily we didn't have to call any of the names. It didn't seem to have any kind of identity complex about it all. Grin

motherinferior · 01/05/2016 18:38

Our cats were pre-named but also answer to YouBugger and WretchedBeast.

MaddyHatter · 01/05/2016 19:13

my cats both have names, i rarely use either though.

The kitten (A tuxedo with a perfect mask) gets called Batcat, shitbag, tinker or Bear, or Dude.

The tabby gets called TubbyTabby, Fatcat, Babygirl or Princess.

jellybeansprout · 01/05/2016 19:51

My cat answers to his name.

CMOTDibbler · 01/05/2016 19:58

My cats are all called after physicists. The first was called Schrodinger obviously.

Smidge001 · 01/05/2016 20:12

We had a cat turn up and live with us years ago. We never named him. I was a child at the time and didn't bother me either that he didn't have a name - there was never a need for one - we would just say 'the cat'. Ie, 'have you fed the cat', or 'the cat wants to go outside' or 'oh look at the cat' etc.

Loved him to bits, he had a lovely temperament and was a gorgeous short haired black cat with a great purr. But no name! Smile

SlimCheesy · 01/05/2016 20:17

My cats definitely answer to their names, and also to their nicknames.

Molly is either 'Molly'; 'Molls'. 'Mollipops' ' Popsicle' or 'M'. She certainly knows all of those are her names.

DH in a fit of annoyance at her endless meowing the other day called her 'Fuzzy pain in the arse meowing thing'. He got one hell of a look from her!

JocastaFarquhar · 01/05/2016 20:24

DD (aged 5) has suggested Conan.

orangeyellowgreen · 01/05/2016 20:30

Not naming a member of your family is weird but referring to one as "it" is horrible. Things are it, family members are he or she.

Gabilan · 01/05/2016 20:55

He's a Marmaduke or a Sidney. Heisenberg if you want to go the physics route.

Gabilan · 01/05/2016 20:58

My two have physics names. But they're usually called Trouble or Where's The Other One?

Caffeinator · 01/05/2016 21:08

I would have been as well making a recording of a fridge or a tin of cat food opening because that's all my three ever responded to anyway.

CMOTDibbler · 01/05/2016 21:25

Gabilan, we have a Heisenberg!

Gabilan · 01/05/2016 21:36

I like physics names, Dibbler. Cats are uncertain. They sit on the edge. They want to be simultaneously in the room and outside it. And the furry little bastards can hide better than a subatomic particle.

Hygellig · 01/05/2016 21:40

I can't imagine having a cat without a name. We have nameless fish, and chickens that nominally have names but I forget which is which. But a cat seems different because it's in your house and you probably talk about it more. It would also make life easier at the vet's if he had a name. There are some great suggestions in this thread!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 01/05/2016 22:27

We have 3 toms, all have names and surnames (there own, not ours) , and these have led to variations of both. All 3 respond to their names, even if all three are there, they seem to know who is who. But none answer to their names.... I have visions of them saying 'yes mother' in creepy human/cat voices.

bellybuttonfairy · 01/05/2016 22:30

Aw! He looks like my lovely cat who died a couple of weeks ago at the grand old age of 18.

His name was Henry. He was a feral kitten and I was advised to tame him but wrapping him in a towel each evening and keep stroking his head/ears. It took about 2 weeks before he started purring.

He turned into the most affectionate cat I have ever met. Lots of people say that cats have a God complex. However, Henry the cat clearly adored me. He followed me everywhere (ie. shops/toddler group, GP's surgery! ).

If I shoo'd him home - he'd wait for me on the wall outside the house until I got back.

He's been with me through breakups, job changes, house moves, marriages, children etc.

Ive been so upset that he died Sad

BathshebaDarkstone · 01/05/2016 22:35

Dibbler is he bloody furious? Wink

Mummyoftwo91 · 01/05/2016 22:45

He's adorable! A lady I worked with couldn't be bothered to name her cat a proper name so she referred to him as the ginger tosser

OhMrBadger · 01/05/2016 23:00

Please call him Stephen! I think Stephen is an excellent name for a cat. But it MUST be spelt with a 'ph', spelling it with a 'v' would just be silly.

EvansAndThePrince · 01/05/2016 23:04

We named ours after their collar colours when I was a kid, they had proper names but they were rubbish so we ended up just calling them by the colour Smile

Baileysagain · 01/05/2016 23:05

Aw, his lovely. Have you seen Breakfast At Tiffany's where Holly names the cat Cat? He looks like a Marmalade to me, good luck

Lweji · 01/05/2016 23:10

My cat answers to his name (sometimes) and a word for food (always).

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 01/05/2016 23:11

I vote for Pushkin Grin

coffeeisnectar · 01/05/2016 23:12

Just popped in to see if you have found a suitable name yet.

All three of ours are rescues so we're already named.

Boy cat is Marshall. He's 14 and definitely knows his name but also gets called handsome boy, gorgeous boy and " fucks sake Marshall! " (the latter when he trips me up or starts knocking things over at 4am).

Silver is a girl, she's 10. She's very sweet, shy and gets called baby girl, sweetie, and scaredy cat.

Coco is 2 and gets called cocopops, fattybum, lardarse, cocolepew and daftcat. She's hilarious and rather round.

I hope your ginger ninja finds a name soon. What about Ronnie? (As in Ronnie barker from porridge)
