To think that a cat doesn't actually need a name?

I've unintentionally adopted a stray kitten recently, who is lovely. I thought about giving him a name, but actually on reflection, it seems silly. He doesn't care or know the difference, and it just means that I have to call out something when letting him in. People have told me that I should name him, but it seems silly. He doesn't care. I would actually feel ridiculous calling out 'Harry' or whatever, from my doorstep. It's a cat. I don't have kids btw, so this doesn't impact any little people. (If I did, I'd let them decide on one). AIBU?

It doesn't matter whether you give it a name; it will end up with a name regardless.

'Tis how humans work.

We have regular squirrel visitors to our garden. Now squirrels are wild animals and definitely don't need a name.

They are now known as Fatty Squirrel, Scabby and Lumpy. You're fighting the inevitable I'm afraid, so best pick him a name you like to start of with.

@Blackwizards - I'm really sorry, but Waffle is an excellent name for a cat.

I also think Mike Hat is genius!

OP - he certainly is a little prince and he clearly knows it! Give him a little head rub from me.

My brother had a little black cat simply named Boy. All Secret's cats have elaborate and fanciful names suite to their personalities. We have one named Miss ChaCha but my husband calls her Dumbass..she loves him just the same..

Your boy is gorgeous and does look happy and content.

AugustaFinkNottle · 01/05/2016 16:59

What are you going to call him at the vet's?

moussakka · 01/05/2016 17:00

@milktwo done! Smile

My neighbour has two cats. One is called PussyPussPuss and the other is SpareCat.

I rather like the idea of giving them old fashioned names such as Leonard or Trevor.

moussakka · 01/05/2016 17:02

hahaha.... he just raided a bowl before I stopped him... and currently has porridge in his eyebrow and is going nuts trying to catch it/ sort it out Grin

Some friends of mine inherited an adult cat, who did have a name but they never, ever used it (except in vet situations) - he was just 'the boy'.

SharingMichelle · 01/05/2016 17:06

Our cats both rejected the lovely and thoughtful names we tried to give them and are now known as Mummy Cat and Crap Cat.

BathshebaDarkstone · 01/05/2016 17:07

My uncle's cat was known as "Cooking Fat" (spoonerise it with a Yorkshire accent! Grin).

HeirOfNothingInParticular · 01/05/2016 17:07

Fred, he's furry and red!

TaIkinPeace · 01/05/2016 17:08

My maths teacher had a cat called Drut because it was a backwards little ....

SharingMichelle · 01/05/2016 17:11

But you need a name of some sort.

Person: Awwww, what's his name?
You: Actually I haven't given him a name because I feel that naming an animal unable to comprehend the act of my doing so is unnecessary and won't impact on his life either positively or negatively.
Person: Mmmmmkay.....

or

Person: Awwww. what's his name?
You: Biscuit.

@sharing of course I wouldn't say that! But do think that part of the reason of not naming him is that I'm just fresh in the UK and don't have anyone else about to insist on a name!

TaIkinPeace · 01/05/2016 17:36

Our former neighbours did not appear to have names for their kittens or feed them or let them in on cold days so we named them Derek and Clive.
It suited them.
Clive got run over one winters day but Derek kept visiting until they moved away with him

it was quite fun to stand at the back door shouting their names ;-)

OneMagnumisneverenough · 01/05/2016 17:45

I thought Talkinpeace was writing poems...now I realise that they are on a small screen and pressing return :o

WeeHelena · 01/05/2016 17:47

My cat has 3 names she answers to, one being her the name from previous 1st owner.

I think naming it cat or kitten in a foreign language would be nice.
Gato or gatito is Spanish one.

moussakka · 01/05/2016 17:53

Hehe well I definitely feed him and give him lots of attention! Have just tried out calling him Elvis, George, etc, and it all felt wrong. Grin

Some good advice about naming Cats.

PestilentialCat · 01/05/2016 18:03

It will only feel right calling the name when you've chosen the right name!

We took in an ancient stray & called him Codger - no idea what he was called before but he soon learnt his new name Grin

DeriArms · 01/05/2016 18:11

We have a much loved cat who was originally a stray. He rocked up one day a few years ago and just refused to leave. We just called him 'the cat' for a while, then this morphed into 'Catface', and that's totally stuck now. When we take him to the vet though I say his name is Bob as I would feel a plonker telling the vet he's called Catface.....it sounds like we were being mean towards him but it was meant entirely affectionately!

TaIkinPeace · 01/05/2016 18:17

We gave Compost Cat a name for our own convenience.
She was utterly deaf Grin

TimeToMuskUp · 01/05/2016 18:17

We have a stray who arrived while I was pregnant with DS2. DS1 (4 at the time) said he looked like our other boy cat, Timmy, and christened him Fake Timmy. It stuck and he's now registered at the vet as Fake Timmy Surname.

The irony is, new folk moved in five houses down from us with cats. Their tiny one looks like both Fake and real Timmy, and the DCs have named him Fake Fakey. He hasn't moved in, just pops in to visit and offer romance to our lady-cats (who have much more sensible names).
