i bloody hat gmai too.

much prefer office outlook (as opposed to windows 8 outlook mail thing that comes on the computer - that's bloody infuriating with its user unfriendliness)

nickelbabe · 16/04/2016 20:09

*hate gmail

bloody hate this laptop too - can't type on the twattish thing

perrita · 16/04/2016 20:10

It has some benefits but I hate how there are no folders, only labels and I've only just figured out how to get it to stop grouping conversations and instead show me every email as a single item

SoftDriftedSnow · 16/04/2016 20:12

How are labels not like folders, though?

And please explain why the single email thing is better. I'd love to know the reasoning. Not snarky, just curious.

Trills · 16/04/2016 20:17

"Labels" is just another word for folders, isn't it?

In my Gmail on the web just now, I made a new label called "test".
I then dragged an email out of my inbox and to "test" (in the left-hand menu).
It now does not appear in my inbox, I can only see it if I click on test

I have a filter for messages that include a certain word in the subject - they are set to apply a label.
Again, they do not appear in my inbox, I can only see them if I click on that label.

How is that different to a folder? What do you want a folder to do?

Are you looking at "All mail" rather than looking at your inbox?

londonrach · 16/04/2016 20:18

Trip advisor is worse as it keeps trying to link to face book. Grrrr.

SuperSange · 16/04/2016 20:22

Ooh, I have a gmail question. Is an email goes to my social or promotions folder, htvf do I mark it so in future it goes to my inbox? It's driving me crazy.

pollyblack · 16/04/2016 20:24

Love gmail! I run 4 accounts through it, two business, and its perfect.

The labels and conversation features really work for me. But actually the search feature is the best, you don't actually have file anything as search is so good!

SoftDriftedSnow · 16/04/2016 20:25

And you can put lots of labels on. For eg, in our small business, we have an email account that a number of us work from (it's the main contact address). I lead the team, so I can quickly go through the inbox and label, say, 6 emails for one support staff member and 3 for another. All of those might relate to jobs that need to be invoiced, so they get a "to invoice" label as well. I deal with invoicing, so I can work through that label whilst the other staff deal with the detail of the email. I take off the invoice label when it's done, they take off their label when they are done. Email gets archived when all done.

It works like a dream.

My personal email is a right state, though Blush

SoftDriftedSnow · 16/04/2016 20:29

SuperSange you can just turn off all the inbox features & just go with Primary (I think that's what it's called), if that works better for you.

CountessOfStrathearn · 16/04/2016 21:42

I don't use Inbox at all as I didn't like having my emails filtered by Gmail, but instead I've set up filters so that all, say, Ocado emails go straight to my Shopping label, missing the inbox, and so all blogs go into a Blogs label ready to be read when I want to.

I've also got a label for "Awaiting Action" so I can get things out of my inbox and then deal with them as replies come back and check through that folder once a fortnight-ish to see if anything is missed.

Also, anyone who doesn't like threaded conversation can just turn that off. (Go to Settings > General > Conversation View.)

It's really clear from reading most of these "complaints" about Gmail that it is more to do with people just not knowing how to use it (or indeed, doing the minimum of Googling to find out how to use it).

CountessOfStrathearn · 16/04/2016 21:44

SuperSange, go to Settings > Inbox > Categories to choose if you don't want to use those headings.

CountessOfStrathearn · 16/04/2016 21:46

LassWiTheDelicateAir, to stop threaded conversation:

Go to Settings > General > Conversation View > Conversation View Off

Tick on the email you want moved and drag it to the inbox tab. It will then be in your inbox .

Thereafter all future emails from the same email address will automatically go straight to the Inbox.

MistressMia · 16/04/2016 21:58

Dragging is difficult if the email is not at the top, so you can also select by ticking the check box, right click and select move to 'primary' or whichever tab you want.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 16/04/2016 22:21

I have turned off conversations. It makes no difference.

OvertheHillandFar · 16/04/2016 22:58

YABU
it's brilliant.

Have 2 accounts and easy to use.

Permanentlyexhausted · 16/04/2016 23:36

There's a reason that I have linked my accounts so I can access emails sent to my Gmail account in my Hotmail account.

Theoretician · 16/04/2016 23:39

I like gmail, but its threaded conversations confuse the fuck out of me. In some I've had with my accountant each message that each of has written gets repeated several times in several different places, and I can never work out whether to look up or down the screen to work out what is a reply to what else, or why some things are collapsed and others aren't. If I expand everything it just makes things worse, as more of the multiple copies of what we each have said come into view.

I never use email on my phone, but I agree the conversation setting makes no difference, and the googling I've done so far seems to confirm you can't turn it off.

Theoretician · 16/04/2016 23:45

To be clear, conversation view setting makes no difference in the Android app.

It does work in a web browser.

If you want conversation off on your phone, the advice seems to be to use Chrome rather than the gmail app.

I actually use Mailbird as my email application on the PC, rather than the browser.

I suppose I will need to find a decent email app for Android, if I ever want to use email on the phone.

wasonthelist · 16/04/2016 23:56

Had my Gmail account since 2005 and am pretty happy with it on the whole. Not hard to use and available pretty much wherever I go.

RTKangaMummy · 17/04/2016 12:42

I have googlemail and Gmail

The thing is I also get other people's emails with same email address as mine, Google say it can't happen but it really does

A lady in New Hampshire, USA I have had emails meant for her for years, once it was a hospital so I replied saying that I was in UK and to ring her as they had written to me not her

I have been getting her invites for family thanksgiving dinners for about 4 years

At the beginning I ignored them, then replied telling the whole family that I was in UK and wasn't their DSis or DIL or SIL

Then last year when the invite came again with options for what to bring to the family Thanksgiving dinner I replied with different options:

Like marmite sandwiches, cucumber sandwiches with the crusts cut off, Toad in the Hole, "sticky willies" - iced bun fingers iykwim, chocolate blancmange rabbit on green jelly grass

Then I sent the email cc to everyone and the replies were very funny, they were like What are these? Why is she suggesting this stuff?

I get her job offers from agency, Honda car dealer about her car

There is a guy who keep tries to join fb with my emails address in India and each time the email comes to verify the account I click no it is not me. I also got his bus ticket voucher from xxxxxx to xxxxxxxx in India

These are not misspelled email addresses they are the same as my googlemail account but they are gmail but they still come thru to my inbox

I have tried to report it but have been told it can't happen but it still happens, so be careful everyone

LivingInMidnight · 17/04/2016 13:27

Gmail and googlemail are the same, both addresses are yours. I get loads of these emails as I got my gmail early on (2004) so have an easy address. People just give the wrong email address sometimes, especially if their email is [email protected] etc. Just mark them as spam next time (some of them probably are spam anyway).

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 17/04/2016 14:14

Thank you for clarifying. I don't have a laptop or desktop so stuck with the Android app.

Is there anyway you can get rid of the long list of useless labels? I just need in, sent , deleted. The labels just clog up the left hand side of the app.
