Sparks Then you know the wrong people Grin

EnriqueTheRingBearingLizard · 16/04/2016 18:10

I love it and am female.

I have it organized to within an inch of its life. Differing accounts for differing reasons all forwarded to one catch-all account. Filters, folders and labels set up, hardly any spam. All syncronized between laptop, phone and ipad. Everything's very neat and nothing gets lost.

TondelayaDellaVentamiglia · 16/04/2016 18:11

...i am reassured you have that too drifted...i thought it was just me or my phone...as I said it's already a bit wilful compared to the last one I had.

Sparklingbrook · 16/04/2016 18:11

I am a bit worried about the sort of people Madame knows. Grin

MadameDePompom · 16/04/2016 18:15

Well we've been recruiting a lot recently in work and all the 'sexy' email account names seem to be Yahoo ones! Why some people don't use a nice bland email address when applying for a job I really don't know.

AdrenalineFudge · 16/04/2016 18:25

MadameDePompom I could have written that myself. In my old role I used to have to recruit trainees and considering we'd get so many applications from people who were even more than qualified we'd have to narrow it down somehow and those with ridiculous e-mail addresses were always the first in the pile to go in the bin. Although I can't say that they were mostly Yahoo, they came from a plethora of providers.

Sparklingbrook · 16/04/2016 18:28

Makes narrowing down the applications a lot easier. Grin

Pippidoeswhatshewants · 16/04/2016 18:37

I hate gmail, I don't want everything conveniently connected and ads targeted to my interests, thank you very much and piss off!!!

I even changed the search engine on my phone to a different provider. Annoyingly, Google is better, but I can live with that inconvenience.

LumpySpacedPrincess · 16/04/2016 18:45

I really liked it, until I signed into google play on my daughters new phone so that she could buy an app. Then the phone was synced to my gmail account and received all my emails had access to my documents etc. There was no way to sign out and sign in to her gmail address and it was so frustrating.

I had to reset the phone to factory settings and set it up again.

LivingInMidnight · 16/04/2016 19:09

I love gmail. I'm female.

You can log out/remove it from android in settings>accounts (that's on stock android, if you use a phone with it skinned or your phone is ancient it may be in another sub menu). If you added the account to buy an app and then removed it the app might not pick up the licence though, but that's the way they try to stop piracy. You'd be better off adding credit to the original account.

2 step authentication and great spam filters. I'm happy.

FelicityR313 · 16/04/2016 19:15

So we have two female fans.

Trills · 16/04/2016 19:19

Felicity you are aware you are on Mumsnet right?

It's probably safest to assume that anyone of undeclared gender is female.

And that they are not impressed with your frankly ridiculous assertions that the only people who would like a thing that you don't like must be men.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 16/04/2016 19:21

I use it and have no problems, mainly on my phone rather than computer.

AliciaMayEmory · 16/04/2016 19:21

Love Gmail! I like that all the accounts are linked, I can see all my most recent emails first in my inbox, searching for emails is easy, I use the calendar and we have it shared so that DH and I can both update and check it, and I like that photos/documents can be shared on the Google drive and use that function regularly. Google plus, however I found to be pretty useless. Have just checked for formthe first time in months and really not sure what it's purpose is apart from recommending pictures of dogs dressed as lions to me!

AliciaMayEmory · 16/04/2016 19:22

Am female BTW...

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 16/04/2016 19:23

I hate Gmail. I hate the threaded conversation. I also set up a Gmail account in the dim and distant past to make a phone work. This was in the days when all my email went either to my office address or the proper email address you got from your Internet provider. I of course picked a really stupid Gmail address.

Over the years the proper email address connected with Internet provider has been long dropped, all my computing is done on a phone and I've somehow got stuck with the Gmail address. I could change it I suppose but too much effort.

leelu66 · 16/04/2016 19:41

My 'official' email service is Gmail. I only realised about 5 years ago that Gmail users are seen as cooler, more professional etc.

However, AOL is my dark, dirty secret. It has emails there from the late 90s and my life is documented in them. It gets a tonne of spam and is regularly hacked, but I can't give it up.

What your email domain says about you

SoftDriftedSnow · 16/04/2016 19:48

Why don't people like threaded conversations? The only time when I don't is when the subject is the same as a previous thread and they get entwined. Actually, I've got more disciplined about putting proper subject lines and it frustrates me that others don't now. I write emails with future searches in mind.

This is for work, though,in the main. I guess it could bring its frustrations for personal use only.

Trills · 16/04/2016 19:57

I like threaded conversations.

When I'm in my inbox I can scan down quickly and find what I'm looking for. If emails were unthreaded then one very active conversation could take up the whole of the visible space on my screen.

When I'm in the conversation I can easily glance at who said what and when by looking at the (collapsed) names, times, and first lines.

I don't have to scroll down a load of >>> in the bottom of an email, or go back out to the inbox, to try to look for the last message from Olivia.

ouryve · 16/04/2016 20:01

I can forgive anyone for hating GMail on their iWhatever. If I spot an email coming through on my iPad, I pick up my phone or laptop!

RupertPupkin · 16/04/2016 20:05

I love it. A lot of the complaints on this thread are due to not customising properly. For example, it's perfectly doable to move emails out of your inbox and into folders.

Sparklingbrook · 16/04/2016 20:07

As a result of this thread I am going to get rid of Gmail altogether and have it all with Sky, as I thought I was the only one that hated it.

SoftDriftedSnow · 16/04/2016 20:08

That's why I like it, Trills. In fact, I hate it any other way. One of my colleagues has his inbox non-threaded (I have access to all and regularly look for info on projects) and it is no wonder he kinda misses the bigger picture a lot of the time. We do lots of small projects, so it's great to be able to look at a few longer threads if you haven't been involved from the start. Or just to refresh your memory.

You've just got to be careful with forwarding...
