To never ever shop at ASDA ever again?

Bought a leg of lamb the other week, brought it home and bunged it in the freezer.

got it out to have for dinner yesterday. Opened up the pack and it was HONKING.
really unpleasant smell.
However label on the pack said there would be a smell and it would fade so gave it the benefit of the doubt.

Seasoned it and cooked it.

took it out of the oven and it was still a bit smelly-tasted it and it was rank.

everything else was ready-potatoes, veg etc

dh had to run out and buy chicken breast from tesco express and we had to cut it up and flash fry it. everything was past it's best by then. chicken breast bought at 8pm from local store = £10!!!!

tweeted asda today-no response
phoned them to be told to take the stinky bloody wrapper out of the bin and take into store for a refund. Asked about the cost of the chicken i had to buy to replace the lamb and the guy said 'well you ate it didn't you?'

never again asda- never again.Angry

I don't shop at asda anymore my last two online ordees came and all the meat when off on the day of delivery or the day after. I think yabu to expect a refund for the chicken breasts. Yanbu to expect a goodwill gesture for your wasted time, freezer space and electric/gas for cooking it.

Goingtobeawesome · 11/04/2016 12:55

He didn't have to rush out and buy what you think of too expensive meat.

PugMummy · 11/04/2016 12:56

I bought a joint of beef for yesterdays Sunday Dinner from Asda , it was inedible, chewy, sinewy (is that a word) awful - I cooked it rare as well and sliced it really thinly. I complained via Home Shopping and got a refund but that's not the point. Sunday lunch with the family was ruined. I tweeted them as they shouldn't be selling meat like this and got a response of return the packaging to the store to get refund (which I already had) thing is, who is going to keep packaging after you've opened something just in case it's no good? Never would buy meat from Asda again which is a shame as it's where we do our weekly shop

Janeymoo50 · 11/04/2016 12:57

Asda meat isn't the best. But I'd not expect them to refund the chicken too, it's disproportionate and you did eat it.

MackerelOfFact · 11/04/2016 12:59

They've refunded you for the meat you purchased from them (which, TBH, was generous of them since it was probably well past its printed use-by date by then, having been in the freezer for a few weeks).

You didn't HAVE to go and buy expensive chicken breasts from Tesco Express though, so I don't see how that was their fault.

I quite like Asda. They sell shredded carrot.

chocorabbit · 11/04/2016 13:00

I agree with everybody suggesting the local butcher's (if possible).

CrystalMcPistol · 11/04/2016 13:00

I quite like Asda. They sell shredded carrot.

I'm not sure why but that made me Grin

Drinksforeveryone · 11/04/2016 13:00

YANBU to expect a refund - and something for the inconvenience.

YABU however to expect payment for the chicken.

Asda are shite in my opinion. I rarely shop there. Sometimes they have good workout clothes in, so will go then. Also like the large ethnic foods aisle.

But the rest of it is crap. Hardly any vegetables and they are very expensive.

CrystalMcPistol · 11/04/2016 13:01

Morrison's and Waitrose are the best supermarkets for meat I think.

DropYourSword · 11/04/2016 13:01

I quite like Asda. They sell shredded carrot.

I think this is my new favourite statement Grin

StepAwayFromTheEcclesCakes · 11/04/2016 13:03

I had a leg of lamb from Asda two weeks ago when it was on offer, twas delicious, better than any I have had from anywhere else recently.smelt and tasted like a lamb roast used to when my Mum used to cook on a sunday. even DH (non meat eater) asked what meat I was cooking as it took him right back to his mums roasts on a sunday too.

inlawsfromhell · 11/04/2016 13:05

Say you sell dresses for a living, you sold a dress sadly it had holes in it but the lady needed it for that evening so had to go buy another dress. Would you refund the other dress she bought?

Summerisle1 · 11/04/2016 13:10

ASDA should have apologised - sincerely and with courtesy! - given you a refund for the lamb and perhaps also offered some sort of voucher for the inconvenience caused. However, I can't really see why they should recompense you for the chicken breasts. You didn't have to rush out and spend £10 on an expensive alternative. That was your choice.

Buglife · 11/04/2016 13:10

I've bought meat in a hamper pack from the butchers and the chicken breast smelt funny so I binned it, it happens on occasion in any store. It's a pain but meat can be funny, I always smell and look at it rather than blindly follow the expected date. You have quite rightly asked for a refund and they have given you one, but I wouldn't dream of asking for a refund for more expensive Tesco chicken because of course you didn't 'have' to buy it, you chose to because you didn't want to eat a meal without meat. Also your DH could have grabbed some cheaper sausages or something to have with it, it's not Asda's fault he made a personal choice to spend £10. I would have just served the rest and maybe had something little for supper later if anyone complained of hunger (but how much proportion of the meal was going to meat anyway, probably not even a third of the plate?)

jimblejambles · 11/04/2016 13:12

Someone I know works for Asda he said they have a special fridge behind the customer service desk for all the gone off food.
He also refuses to buy meat or frozen food from his store as he knows how badly it's stored

opensideno7 · 11/04/2016 13:14

FFS We are becoming a nation of moaners, ASDA cannot reasonably be expected to compensate her beyond her loss (the cost of the lamb) which they have offered to do. What if she was so 'distraught' at the smelly lamb they had dinner in the Michelin starred restaurant next door to cheer themselves up ASDA's problem as well? What about the petrol money to the local Tesco might as well bung that in the mix too...

goldensquirrel · 11/04/2016 13:37

I hate the place as it has a very threatening atmosphere and every time I have been there I am witness to some anti- social, shouty/sweary parent and sobbing toddler/young child. The behaviour of these parents has upset my own young child in the past so I refused to allow that completely avoidable upset to happen again by not going there, plus the food is rubbish!

EverySongbirdSays · 11/04/2016 14:08

Costco sell the best quality meat.

I've never really understood the hate for ASDA my Mum worked there for a time and I've always thought well don't they sell the same stuff as any other supermarket anyway? But have heard people say that they would never go there as its downmarket but the same person shops in Aldi Confused I also go to Aldi so thats not an anti Aldi statement.

They have by far and way the monopoly in my area though. There are 3 of them.

chubbyrunner · 11/04/2016 14:19

I hate ASDA, refuse to go in our local one every again after the awful customer service and terrible attitude of staff. Hated going in there anyway as its where all the chavs do they're shopping in our town!

Idiot, you're not supposed to rinse raw meat. Just saying. The smell they refer to isn't the rank smell described in the OP.

TulipsInAJug · 11/04/2016 14:27

I guess it depends where you are in the UK and where Asda sources it meat. Ours sources local meat.

Having said that I don't buy any meat from Asda or ANY of the chains - I get all our meat from the local butcher who can show you the field where the animal grazed in a few miles down the road.

I loathe Asda. Loathe them. Hate the store, hate that eye damaging green everywhere, hate their customer service (such as it is) and hate and detest their security staff who once detained me because an alarm went off - I had absolutely nothing on me that could have caused that but they wouldn't have it despite an extensive search of my bags. Fuckers. I hate them.
And I hate their fucking rubbery chicken too.

CrystalMcPistol · 11/04/2016 14:30

So, is that a thumbs down for Asda Duchess? It's not quite clear Grin
