To never ever shop at ASDA ever again?

Bought a leg of lamb the other week, brought it home and bunged it in the freezer.

got it out to have for dinner yesterday. Opened up the pack and it was HONKING.
really unpleasant smell.
However label on the pack said there would be a smell and it would fade so gave it the benefit of the doubt.

Seasoned it and cooked it.

took it out of the oven and it was still a bit smelly-tasted it and it was rank.

everything else was ready-potatoes, veg etc

dh had to run out and buy chicken breast from tesco express and we had to cut it up and flash fry it. everything was past it's best by then. chicken breast bought at 8pm from local store = £10!!!!

tweeted asda today-no response
phoned them to be told to take the stinky bloody wrapper out of the bin and take into store for a refund. Asked about the cost of the chicken i had to buy to replace the lamb and the guy said 'well you ate it didn't you?'

never again asda- never again.Angry

Perhaps because she had to pay over the odds (tesco express prices) for meat she didn't want because the lamb was off?

THIS!

I wonder if its a dodgy batch , we had an issue with aldi and mince for a while, going off well before BBD it seems ok now though.

NapoleonsNose · 11/04/2016 11:41

I think Asda should give the OP something extra for the inconvenience of having to go out and buy something to replace the stinky lamb. I used to work on a customer service desk in a different supermarket and we would often make goodwill payments in addition to refunds. If you have no joy from the person on the desk, ask to speak to a manager and be clear that you expect more than just the price of the lamb back.

NNalreadyinuse · 11/04/2016 11:44

I bought chicken from Asda and luckily noticed as I was putting it in the car that it was off. Thought it was a one off but have had problems with their meat more than once. Would never buy meat from Asda again - I have no faith in their ability to store it properly.

They are great for cakes and bread and tins of sauces etc.

Notso · 11/04/2016 11:47

You didn't have to buy expensive Tesco chicken though. That was your choice, I wouldn't have expected a refund for the chicken.

Asda is crap for food IMO shite meat and poor brand choices. It is quite cheap though I think.

ilovesprouts · 11/04/2016 11:49

Got some lamb at Xmas was rank ,I buy my me a from a local farm shop now .

angemorange · 11/04/2016 11:49

Last week I bought chicken breasts from ASDA and they were rank when I opened them.
In the same shop I had bought some cooked chicken for sandwiches and it was off too!

Definitely won't be buying any more meat/cooked meat from them.

DropYourSword · 11/04/2016 11:53

You didn't have to buy the chicken though. I think it's quite entitled of you to expect a refund for that!!

CrystalMcPistol · 11/04/2016 11:53

Haven't bought meat from Asda in years as it always looks so unappealing.

Their customer service team might have been a bit charmless but I wouldn't have expected them to refund you for the chicken you bought from Tesco.

LagunaBubbles · 11/04/2016 12:10

Nothing wrong with the meat in my Asda, I had a lovely gammon joint I bought there on Saturday and it was delicious. Not generally had a problem with anything from them actually, a few weeks ago I noticed a pack of yoghurts DH had bought were a day out of date so he took them back - they replaced them and gave him a £5 gift voucher to.

I think YABU expecting them to refund you for Tescos chicken mind you. I wouldnt have necessarily tweeted them right away - I would have simply taken the lamb back for a refund.

LAlady · 11/04/2016 12:11

I bought a fresh chicken from Asda. Cooked it. The amount of fat that came off it & the smell was unbelievable. Binned it. Never again.

feellikeanalien · 11/04/2016 12:12

e-mail the CEO. I had a problem with Asda over a delivery of a trampoline. Their complaints department are hopeless.

Once I e-mailed the CEO I had a response and a partial rebate within 24 hours.

Let me know if you need the e-mail address. It's easily available online.

PPie10 · 11/04/2016 12:12

Ive bought meat from m&s and waitrose and they were rank too at times. I guess it happens anywhere.

DropYourSword · 11/04/2016 12:13

Email the CEO because Asda won't refund the OP for chicken she bought at Tesco. Are you serious?!

kaitlinktm · 11/04/2016 12:31

Frozenponds - what are ghost payments?

SmarterThanTheAverageBear16 · 11/04/2016 12:35

He's right, you were mad to ask for the cost of the perfectly good chicken that you ate!

IT happens. Get your refund and get over it!

Lockheart · 11/04/2016 12:37

YANBU - you can shop wherever you like, surely?

wasonthelist · 11/04/2016 12:39

YANBU but my boycott of my local ASDA is due to the non-working Self Service Tills.

LittleRedSparke · 11/04/2016 12:39

"You didn't have to buy expensive Tesco chicken though. That was your choice, I wouldn't have expected a refund for the chicken"

OP didnt have choice, the rest of the dinner was cooked and they needed something quickly (chicken breast bought at 8pm from local store = £10!!!)

CrystalMcPistol · 11/04/2016 12:41

Of course she had a choice.

wasonthelist · 11/04/2016 12:42

BTW I would never buy Lamb in ASDA anyway because of the opaque nature of where it's from - they have been caught out for mislabelling Lamb as UK when it was actually NZ at least once.

JeanGenie23 · 11/04/2016 12:43

What are ghost payments?

I must admit I think a lot of supermarket chains are crap when it comes to meat. Did anyone see that documentary with the river cottage chef, he was investigating Asda and Tesco for injecting their chicken with water to make them look and weigh heavier, then of course when cooked the meat shrivelled to nothing.

We go to the butcher around the corner from our house, it's cheaper and the meat tastes much nicer!

CwtchesAndCuddles · 11/04/2016 12:45

They offered a full refund which is no more than is reasonable. I think you are over reacting.

kinkytoes · 11/04/2016 12:52

You don't NEED meat to have a meal though. Rushing out to buy chicken at the last minute while everything else spoils? This sort of thinking really doesn't make sense to me. Surely there was something in the cupboard (even rice or pasta) to make up for the missing lamb, and then all your veg would have still been fine. OK it might not be as satisfactory but a lot less effort and expense.

Notso · 11/04/2016 12:54

Of course she had a choice. We have had a similar situation and just ate the rest of the roast minus the meat. An annoying situation but not like they had no other food.
