To wonder why any woman would work as a 'pornstar'....

Flashbangandgone · 31/03/2016 21:59

...unless it was the only way
a) to make ends meet and put food on the table and secure a roof over their family's head, or
b) to pay for an expensive drug habit....

Surely it's not just prostitution in private (which is bad enough), but prostitution broadcast to the world! I just can't imagine why anyone would do it as a lifestyle choice?

For validation.

Italiangreyhound · 31/03/2016 23:05

maggiethemagpie define 'choice'. Maybe one choice is easier to make than another for one person. All things being equal I wonder how many women wolud get into porn?

I think the idea they do it because they like sex is a myth that men might want to buy into, it might make it easier to watch porn thinking the women are enjoying it.

imip · 31/03/2016 23:06

My sister does something like this. She's v big on Instagram with over half a million followers ( I don't do Instagram, might have used the wrong terminology). She gets noticed by fans in the street often. There's a huge mural of her naked in my hometown (nipples recently been erased).

We grew up in a home wrecked by domestic violence and alcoholism. I seriously believe low self esteem is at the heart of it. Also, men (and women) can be just as rude to her when she's working (you're fat, you're ugly ect). She has false boobs and Botox - she is only 31. She has a real unique look, not a traditional porn star look, but she makes money by being naked.

I adore my sister, but when it's someone you know, it really is a different issue. She thinks she is strong and a feminist. Unfortunately, I don't agree...

Italiangreyhound · 31/03/2016 23:06

But I know nothing so I could be totally wrong.....

mudandmayhem01 · 31/03/2016 23:11

I have seen very little porn but I imagine it is a lot less damaging for men ( heterosexual ones) in a purely physical sense if not in other ways. Interestingly I think it is one of the few jobs where men get paid less than women.

imwithspud · 31/03/2016 23:15

imip that's really sad. I've often wondered what the relatives of those who go into the porn/stripping industry make of it. Do they turn a blind eye and let them get on with it? Does the money they make make it all okay? My dd's are very young, but I wouldn't be happy for them to go into such an industry, I know that once they become adults I can't really do anything about the choices they make and as long as they're happy then that's all that matters (how many women in the porn industry are happy though?) but I'd feel like I'd gone wrong somewhere along the line.

ButterfliesinSpring · 31/03/2016 23:19

I have wondered about amateur porn for the money - I think I could probably go there if with my own partner and some sort of disguise. I wouldn't want anyone to know that I knew - but wouldn't really care about anyone else seeing it

I think it's probably for the money usually.

BillSykesDog · 31/03/2016 23:25

Apparently quite a lot of young women do cameras on sites like adultwork to put themselves through uni/get a bit of extra cash.

BillSykesDog · 31/03/2016 23:26

I think the money thing can also partially explain care leavers too. If you're a care leaver and your fridge breaks and your car conks out you can't depend on the bank of Mum and Dad.

MrsJayy · 31/03/2016 23:28

You see the accidental sex tape release the reality star shattered and sorry she shamed her family etc etc but sex sells sex makes reality star famous its all seedy exploitation and manipulation isnt it ?

TheCraicDealer · 31/03/2016 23:35

My mate does a bit of cam work, special request pics and videos for guys (for a charge), sells her used knickers, does a virtual "girlfriend experience" for fellas via text. She got into it through Reddit, started posting on a board there about boobs and it sort of snowballed. She admits that she fed off the (many) positive comments, it gave her a boost when she was feeling low, and then she just saw a route to a bit of easy cash. Obviously different to porn-porn, but you can see the escalation and the route into it would be similar.

She's been "unmasked" several times by different groups of friends and family- her brother's mate finding out was particularly tough for her. DFriend's been relatively positive about it before but she's recently admitted she wishes she hadn't got into it. Between dealing with people finding out and having to handle dickheads on the internet calling you a slag and a whore because you won't provide them wanking material for free, she says it's just not worth it. I think if she had another job to go to she'd stop quite happily.

cleaty · 31/03/2016 23:37

The majority of women in porn have been sexually abused as kids. They have been groomed into it.

Rinoachicken · 31/03/2016 23:40

I remember watching a documentary on this topic not that long ago at actually the men were just as pressured and tired etc as the women so I don't think it's as different for the men v the women as you think. I remember one guy saying how he was pressured into doing work for the gay porn scene - he was straight but had to do it and hated it.

NameChanger22 · 31/03/2016 23:41

My guess is that some women do it because they love attention and money.

ClopySow · 31/03/2016 23:47

All of the most famous porn stars committed suicide? All of them?

I know a woman who put herself through university by doing porn. She doesn't look back on it with any shame or negativity, it was just something she did.

I don't think you need long legs, in fact i bet there's a market for not long legs. There's a porn market for everything these days. Think of something, anything, add porn on the end, google it and you'll find it.
Now off to prove myself wrong with "pea puree porn" or something.

imip · 31/03/2016 23:48

Tbh, I just need to let it go. I can't judge my sister negatively for it. I've got 4 dds - it's good training in maintaining a positive relationship with them even if I disagree with what they do!

The money is good. She's canny in that street clothing labels will pay her to wear their clothes, bars will pay her to drink st opening nights, but she still has to strip and web cam for decent money. And she spends it on her hair, nails, tattoos. Botox, her cats!!! She works about 3 days a week, I suppose that's a benefit. It kinda feeds itself though. They become so narcissistic and self-obsessed, I'm concerned at dome point that my dds will be her FB friends and at some point they'll be judged by their peers about her. That if my girls are flat chested, they'll feel shit because she has huge tits. That it's just not an accurate representation of womanhood.

ClopySow · 31/03/2016 23:53

I'm genuinely curious about your comment cleaty
That the majority of women in porn were sexually abused as children

Where does that information come from?

monkeyfacegrace · 31/03/2016 23:57

This sort of bollocks makes me laugh.

I'd happily do a porn movie. I'm a strong independent woman, I love sex, and I love money.

All the 'ahh isn't it sad they must be abused' is offensive to women. We can be just as strong as men, and believe it or not, we are allowed to like sex and money too Hmm

ClarenceTheLion · 01/04/2016 00:01

potentially triggering post

I don't buy the 'maybe they like sex...' argument. Most of us like sex, but the porn I've watched - mainstream stuff - doesn't look like sex I recognize. The women are routinely humiliated, degraded, and hurt. I did watch one video with an ex where two women had anal sex with several men for about half an hour, while getting spat on and slapped and choked, and they were both grinning like champs throughout the whole thing. It was only the grinning that differentiated it from a violent gang rape scene.

It's very different for men, unless they do violent gay porn. You only ever see men in straight porn being punched and spat on and verbally abused if it's for an S&M fetish. A very common sight in porn is of a man shoving his cock as far down a woman's throat as it will go, and the arresting thing about it is how careful the women are to keep their teeth well out of the way. They can be gagging and crying, but the men are never in danger of getting injured. Because that would be unthinkable...

monkeyfacegrace · 01/04/2016 00:13

You do realise there are a gazillion different catagories of porn, yes?

If you wanted to go searching for loving porn, massage porn, gentle porn, then there is TONS out there.

Same as rough, violent, s&m etc.

Different strokes for different folks.

Personally gentle sex does absolutely nothing for me. And no, there's no abusive past or anything sinister that makes me that way.

Some people just can't accept that everyone's different. Of course there will be some trafficked women/drugs/abuse involved, but to instigate that it's ALL like that is narrow minded.

Canyouforgiveher · 01/04/2016 00:13

I'd happily do a porn movie. I'm a strong independent woman, I love sex, and I love money.

So why haven't you? If it is such a great chance at earning money doing something you love, why haven't you done it? I love money and love reading/research so I became a lawyer. My friend loved science and loved money so became a doctor. Why didn't you become a porn star if it was right up your street?

I think both the men and the women involved in porn are, except for a very very few lucky ones, marginalised people who have come from hard lives with little in the way of safety net, options, choices, education, or god forbid professional training. Does anyone seriously think there is a girl out there saying "well I have my degree and am thinking about being a barrister but to be honest I love sex and want to make a lot of money so am thinking I'll be a porn star instead"

There may be one or two lucky women who made a bit of money, retired, were not particularly abused. For every one of them there are 100 women, men, girls and boys who are exploited and treated like crap because they are from the part of society who ends up doing the shit jobs because they have no other choices and most people don't care about them.

monkeyfacegrace · 01/04/2016 00:17

Why didn't you

Because I got married young instead.

I wouldn't be unfaithful to my husband and he wouldn't like me having sex with other men. Simple as that.

Canyouforgiveher · 01/04/2016 00:18

So do you think all porn stars are single and unattached then, monkey?

monkeyfacegrace · 01/04/2016 00:20

Not at all. I just know that my DH wouldn't like it Confused

Canyouforgiveher · 01/04/2016 00:22

right, so the only thing stopping you having a brilliant and happy career as a porn star is your husband wouldn't like it.

Got it.
