My DD who is 3 has been having stomach/bowel problems for the last year. Diagnose as constipation. She can not pass a stool for weeks despite fantastic diet and laxatives and weeks is in severe pain most days. She is very petite and skinny but her stomach has swollen to look 9 months pregnant. Getting no where with doctors/hospital etc.
Aibu to think this is not how a heathy child's stomach should look.

Or even poor little mite needs help. Also agree that enemas should be working within 20-30 mins

Normally unwound expect an enema to work reasonably quickly, certainly within a couple of hours but all very dependant on the child and the type of enema. Is she uncomfortable/sore or settling down? Remember if you're worried at all or even just not sure, call the ward for advice. That's why they have the open access and they won't mind you calling any time. I'm glad the continance nurse has taken things seriously and seems to be getting the ball rolling for follow up. You're doing good maemae!

LauraMipsum · 01/04/2016 20:49

Poor little thing. This sounds horrendous.

Flowers to all of you.

SoConfused15 · 01/04/2016 20:50

OP you are doing a great job in keeping it together well done. Fingers crossed for your DD

Libitina · 01/04/2016 20:51

Another one agreeing that if the enema was going to be of any help, it would have worked by now.

2016ismyyear · 01/04/2016 20:52

Time to pack some provisions for an overnight stay.
The enema hasn't worked. Shes behaving oddly. Time for close monitoring in hospital.

littlemaemae · 01/04/2016 20:56

She had a moment of her bum hurting on the way back to the car then was her normal happy self then fell asleep.
She's just woken with a cry but had a cuddle and is back to sleep.
She's not hot.
Yes, I'm going to get my bag ready as I have a bad feeling.
I'm expecting her to wake in the night in pain.
I want her to get what rest she can now X

How about phoning the ward to say that nothing's happened yet? Did they say how long they thought it would take?

WellErrr · 01/04/2016 21:02

If it hasn't worked I think I'd take her back.

CoperCabana · 01/04/2016 21:03

I would second ringing the ward.

You are doing so well. I panic when mine have the sick bug.

Flowers
littlemaemae · 01/04/2016 21:03

They said if nothing had happened by tomorrow afternoon then to ring.
The nurse was lovely and very sympathetic. She thought it would work straight away, on the way home.

OP posts:
SkodaLabia · 01/04/2016 21:06

If she thought it would work straight away on the way home I wonder why they didn't keep her in for even half an hour. Surely the car isn't the best place for you to deal with the results of an enema.

How frustrating for you, OP. Good luck to you all for tonight.

perfumedlife · 01/04/2016 21:07

OP acting obsessive and agitated is not good. It could be sepsis for all we know. Please just ring the hospital for advice.

Valeriesquiteposh · 01/04/2016 21:09

This is utter madness, is this what the NHS has come too? A small child sent home straight after an enema, not even able to stay until it works?

Poor little sod, OP you are doing amazing

cestlavielife · 01/04/2016 21:09

One x ray is very little radiation. If she had suspect broken arm you would not hesitate to cray or scan .

Wolpertinger · 01/04/2016 21:10

Enemas still need poo to be in the rectum to work. They are just a bit more powerful than suppositories.

So they work pretty much straight away - but no poo in rectum, nothing to work on.

Given your DD had been passing 'chocolate milkshake' it's no surprise there was no poo in the rectum as she has been pooing very liquidy poo. So unlikely to be a big lump of poo fall into the rectum for the enema to work on.

I'd let her have a nice sleep in her own bed but the second she wakes up in pain, or first thing in the morning be phoning up the ward.

beepbeep · 01/04/2016 21:12

Feel for you all & fingers crossed things start moving soon

cestlavielife · 01/04/2016 21:16

Take her back in the morning and ask /demand for scan or xray to see where the impaction is.

The liquid is overflow around the impaction. My ds got given liquid paraffin after xray showed blockage as gastro said it would be less painful than a sudden evacuation... but it s not commonly given ....

perfumedlife · 01/04/2016 21:16

Wolpertinger if that's the way enemas are meant to work, is the logic that by dislodging the poo in the rectum, the poo further up the colon can come out?

If so, today's treatment would only make sense if the hospital knew for sure that the blockage was in the rectum and not higher up? But how could they know, if no xray was done? Sorry for the questions, am just trying to understand the medics logic.

Nancery · 01/04/2016 21:17

Hi OP, in the nicest possible way, I was hoping this thread would have dried up by now as your poor little DD was okay but it appears not. I agree with the others who say to take her back to the ward, the agitation and obsessiveness don't sound good. I had enemas a few times when i was little and they worked very quickly, this doesn't sound right at all (although I admit things make have changed quite a bit since!)
Good luck x

Avebury · 01/04/2016 21:17

Your instinct that something is wrong is evident from your posts - please take her back. You have been brilliant at advocating for her these past couple of days - don't be fobbed off now. Someone needs to actually look inside her and see what is happening right now.

londonrach · 01/04/2016 21:20

Oh op you so brave. Agree with others let her sleep but the second she wakes in pain take her straight in!!!

JuneFromBethesda · 01/04/2016 21:23

I'm so sorry your daughter is struggling like this, so sorry for you too. Both of my children have had mild constipation over the years and even a mild episode is so upsetting to see, as a parent - I can't imagine how worried you must be. I hope they find the cause soon and it's easily treated Flowers
