My DD who is 3 has been having stomach/bowel problems for the last year. Diagnose as constipation. She can not pass a stool for weeks despite fantastic diet and laxatives and weeks is in severe pain most days. She is very petite and skinny but her stomach has swollen to look 9 months pregnant. Getting no where with doctors/hospital etc.
Aibu to think this is not how a heathy child's stomach should look.

Hope things get better today. I have a tubby three year old and his stomach is nothing like that! I hope you get listened to Flowers

Dowser · 01/04/2016 10:18

I sorry I don't have time to rtft but have you tried probiotics?

Probiotics are the good flora In Our bowels that get knocked out if antibiotics have been used.

( I eat a lot of raw onion which contains the prebiotics from which probiotics are made. I also make my own kefir and kombucha which are probiotic rich...but you'll never get a child to eat them. So your best bet is to buy the capsules and see if they will swallow them or maybe mix in yogurt . Probio 10 are good)

I've fought the battle of the bowels for years but I find not taking antibiotics unless at deaths door, ( had none for four years. No painkillers or Ibuprofen...that's like pouring glue into the bowels . Really gums them up.) Tiger's ginger tea is really good for digestion...but again you wont get them to drink that.

Would she eat a couple of fig's biscuits. Figs are excellent for bowels. Can you still get syrup of figs? Take that at night.

Things is its going to take time. It's taken two years for my bowel to recover after years of misuse but I'm an adult and will take nasty tasting stuff if I know it will help. It's much different with a child.

Ilovenannyplum · 01/04/2016 10:45

This is just awful Sad
You're poor DD, hope things are still getting better

cakeycakeface · 01/04/2016 10:57

I'm sorry you've had a rough night Mae. I hope it means something will happen soon. How are your DDs spirits with coping with this? Thanks I think you are doing brilliantly.

badfurday · 01/04/2016 11:00

I've been following your thread and just wanted to offer my support. Hope your daughter gets sorted soon. You are doing a brilliant job!

ExitPursuedByABear · 01/04/2016 11:07

If in the future you are going to try herbal type remedies - I swear by Black Forest Tea - it is South African and has helped me when bunged up following operations. I have bought on line before now but can't remember where from, but I have asked my brother to send some over for my father. If you would like to try some in the future when things have settled down a bit, let me know and I would be happy to get some for you.

ChopOrNot · 01/04/2016 11:09

You're doing brilliantly. Well done.

Also, I am not sure of the accuracy of this but I heard that if you cut out/cut down gluten prior to Coeliacs blood test then it will come back negative - as in essence the body has less gluten it is fighting/reacting to. I heard you need gluten at least twice a day to trigger the blood test (if this is what the issue is).

So, depending on what happens with referrals/tests/bloods etc - and their timing - be careful of cutting stuff out before tests as it may impact on the results iyswim.

littlemaemae · 01/04/2016 11:19

She has a naturally happy disposition so she is generally in good spirits.
Singing away then dropping to the floor when she gets the cramp and the poo. Then happily getting her bum wiped.
Tummy looks bigger than ever, maybe that's gas accumulating.

She seems over the moon and really proud that something is coming out of her.

When she had the ceoliacs test she hadn't been eating at all and was on strong antibiotics so I wonder if that gave a false result.

OP posts:
Wafflenose · 01/04/2016 11:44

I'm so pleased that things are happening for her, and that she's coping so well.

BaskingTrout · 01/04/2016 12:02

oh bless your DD for being so cheerful in the face of all of this. you are all doing so so well.

my DD started with idiopathic constipation just after she turned 1. this thread has made me beyond thankful that my gp was on the ball, she was immediately given movicol because in the words of my gp "impaction is grim, lets make sure we don't go there". she has a little maintenance dose every day and is fine. I just hope you will get there with your DD one day soon. all the best.

MargotsDevil · 01/04/2016 12:16

Apparently when getting tested for coeliac you need to have been eating gluten regularly for a month or so before to ensure that the reaction is showing, so if she hadn't been eating at all I would imagine that would impact on the reliability of the test.

QuimReaper · 01/04/2016 12:16

I've never been so invested in someone else's poo! Keep going MiniMae!

coffeeisnectar · 01/04/2016 12:19

I've just read the whole thread. Your poor DD!! I get constipated from my meds and it's so painful!

You are right to keep fighting and pushing. This is not normal at all. I'm glad things are moving in the right direction, poo wise, but really, you can't live like this long term. Stuck at home in the bathroom for days on end.

Your oldest DD sounds like a little star, I hope you can reward her in some way for her kindness and patience towards her little sister.

Please do not give up pushing for tests and a reason for this to be happening.

MissBeaHaving · 01/04/2016 12:30

Glad that something is happening Maemae,I really hope today is the day & Dd gets some relief,I can't imagine her poor little tummy any bigger than the pics, must be so sore bless her.

Well done little one!

MrsNutella · 01/04/2016 13:01

mae I've been lurking and following your thread. I feel so sorry for you and your poor DD having put through the mill with little to no real support. I have a friend whose son (just turned 4) is being investigated for coeliac (but we live in Germany and not the uk, there is definitely more cash in the healthcare system here... Although that isn't always a good thing).

She was advised not to change the diet until after the tests are back. It seems obvious although counter intuitive; but in order for the tests to show the "correct" result the DC need to be eating whatever it is that their system doesn't like.

I really hope your DD feels better soon and I hope that you can shout to get her the care she needs. You are doing a great job, stick to your guns!

SpaceDinosaur · 01/04/2016 13:34

I too have been lurking and am horrified about how you have been treated.

I'm so worried about out NHS

littlemaemae · 01/04/2016 13:34

Your comments are making me chuckle and cheering me up, funny how we are all avid poo watchers now.
I will save this thread to she DD when she is older, she will be so Blushmum you are so embarrassing.

She is feeling dreadful now, lethargic, warm and I don't think I will get any food into her.
It must be a shock to her system

londonrach · 01/04/2016 13:40

jay55 · 01/04/2016 13:43

Glad things are moving, sorry she's not feeling well, imagine it's exhausting for her.

Hope you continue to have a poofull weekend.

Gileswithachainsaw · 01/04/2016 13:44

aw poor thing.

sending big hugs and some Wine for you

MissBeaHaving · 01/04/2016 14:14

Aw the poor love,is the continence team keeping an eye on her?
I'd keep an eye on her temp just to be on the safe side. Thanks

Cagliostro · 01/04/2016 14:18

Yep wanted to echo what has been said about the coeliac test - it won't work if the person hasn't been eating gluten, as the antibodies won't show up if they don't detect any gluten. So it would be worth asking for a retest at some point.

Hello to MiniMae in the future! [waves] :o

Bungleboggs · 01/04/2016 14:24

Just wanted to say that I think you are amazing, must be so stressful. There is nothing worse than a poorly child. Hope she gets better very very soon x
