AIBU to bleach my DD's facial hair

She noticed me doing it today- when she came into the bathroom without knocking (I normally do it just before a shower)

She is very dark haired and has quite noticeable facial hair (top lip) I didn't think we'd cross this bridge until she was at least a teenager Sad She has been teased about this and her dark hair on her eyebrows and legs by some children and I've told her to ignore them (tackled it with the school)

She's very upset as she sees a simple solution- to me she is too young and I worry what damage it would do to her skin etc- whilst feeling like a hypocrite because I do it.

Any advice? She is 9.

Does anyone have any thoughts on using a lumea of a young teenager?

RomComPhooey · 27/03/2016 20:06

I would veet personally and keep on top of it.

Veet Facial gave me chemical burns and I had blisters on my face for about a week. I'd do a discrete patch test somewhere out of sight and time how long you leave it on very carefully before you use this on such young skin.

RomComPhooey · 27/03/2016 20:06

Ha, x-post with Birthgeek.

I think the best is just a no fuss approach. "Oh that happens to me aswell... Happens to tons of ladies with darker hair"
Then buy a pack of wax strips (face/bikini) and fast as a flash, whip it off. I did this to my daughters (we're all a bit Frida Khalo as our facial hair goes). Finishing wipe. Job done. Takes 10 seconds, will make her heart happy. If it bothers her it's a huge deal. If not, no worries. We incorporate it into general pampering evenings , paint our toes, wash our hair, wax our face lol!
I explain its no biggie... It happens to loads of girls, otherwise those little strips wouldn't be sold in every branch of boots.

I have my 9 year olds monobrow waxed in the middle (not shaped just the joining bit). Makes her happier and stops the name calling. Getting it done professionally is the best bet.

luciole15 · 27/03/2016 20:13

If she is being teased then why not fix it and put an end to it. Bleaching works for my tash and facial hair which is more obvious when I haven't had much sun, but I am quite fair skinned. If it works for you then should work for her if you have similar colouring. Try a patch test and if ok experiment over Easter hols. If not successful try threading or wax before she goes back to school.

As for legs, waxing's a good idea. Maybe just below Knee? Regrowth is more tolerable than shaving and does last longer than depiliatory cream. Might have to go above knee when she's older.

But if you decide to do any of these, please help her maintain it until she can afford it herself.

Pufflehuff · 27/03/2016 20:19

Thread it. All bleaching will do is give her a blonde moustache and make the teasing ten times worse.

I was teased mercilessly for facial hair, made worse by my mother's insistence that no, I was not permitted to do a thing about it. She said she'd throw me out if I did. No idea why. Anyway. I know how it feels to be stuck with it and powerless to remove it, and will therefore be a crusader of hair removal for my daughter when she asks.

But yeah, thread. Removal creams don't do anything. I'm also a fan of simply tweezing it, which is what I eventually did when I couldn't take it any more and decided the risk the homelessness threat (she didn't follow through), which left no marks, scars or problems at all. It was then only a case of tackling any stray ones. I dubbed it My Third Eyebrow.

Now, as with eyebrows, I'm a big fan of threading, finding it gets all the tiny hairs tweezers cannot and feels oddly pleasant. Turn it into a lip/eyebrow session for you both. Demystify it. Point out lots of people do it and it's not a big deal.

Secretmomma79 · 27/03/2016 20:39

Anthonyblanche I get pimples from threading if the area isn't cleansed first and they put Aloe Vera gel on top afterwards. I just avoid those places and go where they they prep the skin properly first.

Littleallovertheshop · 27/03/2016 20:46

I regret waxing/removing my upper lip hair as a teenager. I'd at least try bleaching and see how it looks. Once you start you can never stop and it's a total faff for a 9 year old.

OohMavis · 27/03/2016 20:49

I was using my dad's razor to shave mine off in secret at the age of 10. It was incredibly embarrassing. I'm sure my parents knew what I was doing but they didn't say anything.

I wish my mother had taken me to get it waxed!

Bearbehind · 27/03/2016 20:56

Really, really, really don't boeach- I know people who bleach.

Regardless of how invisible they think it looks, it absolutely sticks out like a sore thumb.

I sit there and think- why the fuck do you do that?

Bleached hair really does glow.

AnthonyBlanche · 27/03/2016 20:57

That's interesting Secret. Maybe I should give threading another go, but how would I know which are the best places to go? I also thought threading was a lot more painful than waxing

Secretmomma79 · 27/03/2016 21:04

Most places do walk in, so I would walk in and watch to see if the therapists prepped people's skin properly, if not I just left. Or, just ask the therapist Grin
Brows- no difference pain wise. 'tache- OMG it's horrible! But I get a much cleaner finish with thread rather than wax, so I put up with it and if I go every 3 weeks it hurts much less.

staghunter · 27/03/2016 21:09

I do my 10 yr olds. It is not perfect but makes a difference.

Will start threading / waxing soon but she would find it too painful atm.

Aspergallus · 27/03/2016 21:57

Nads. Much safer than bleach; it's not hot. And less irritating than hair removal cream.

It's a shame to start so young, but if she is conscious of it it'll be hard to turn this around.

Aspergallus · 27/03/2016 21:59

This wee stick is good. Better than pre-waxed strips.

Be careful with waxing - my daughter has sensitive skin and ended up with a top lip of tiny little white spots after waxing (was done as a salon). She now uses the facial hair removing cream (Superdrug own has been the best for her - always patch test) - good luck

MrsJayy · 27/03/2016 22:04

1 of mine has been having her eyebrows done since she was 9 she was being teased was just the monobrow at first if your Dd is self concious(sp) take her to a salon and ask for advice the bleaching doesnt look that bad though

Fizzielove · 27/03/2016 22:12

I'd take her to get it waxed before she does something daft like use a razor to shave it off!

EverySongbirdSays · 27/03/2016 22:21

Definitely get this sorted, I had a friend who this happened to at puberty, she bleached but as PP have said she just looked like she had a blonde moustache. Her mother back in 1995 took her for electrolysis. I don't think they do that now I think it's just lazer. I started suffering early 20s I spent a lot of money on laser. It all grew back.

Threading has worked best for me over the years.

FlowersAndShit · 27/03/2016 22:23

Just shave it off

KimmySchmitty · 27/03/2016 22:34

Please let her remove it
She's being teased, who cares if she's not old enough??

DontMindMe1 · 27/03/2016 22:38

get it threaded - cheap and no chemicals needed.

Quietlygoingmad67 · 27/03/2016 22:38

flowers really? "Just shave it off" not great advice!! Can you imagine starting to shave facial hair aged 9 - the poor girl by the time she is a teen will end up with stubble on her upper lip and end up shaving 2 times a day! My mother did this and gets '5 o'clock shadow' Confused

AnthonyBlanche · 27/03/2016 22:39

floŵers that is the very last thing she should do! OP either waxing or threading is the way to go. Though I think professional waxing will be far less painful and quicker than threading.
