I rarely use the train (twice a year maybe) but thats what the quiet carriages are for surely - quiet. If people want to natter about rubbish they can sit elsewhere

The conversations in question are not being conducted quietly (2 sets of offenders). I have moved half way up the carriage and can still hear everything. I'll spare them this time, they seem immune to my silent huffing and staring through the back of the chair.

YABU. Quiet carriages are very unpopular, and there isn't a 'no quiet carriage' option available when you buy tickets, so people end up there who don't want to be there.
I did rather love the woman who on being told off for talking very quietly into her phone on the quiet carriage then spent the rest of the journey right outside it, with the door open, talking loudly. I mean, I know she shouldn't have done it, but it was still funny.

The train is not busy. Plenty of room elsewhere. Fuck off chatty people!

Talking to person next to you in low voice is fine IMO (I've got hyperacusis and no problem with it). Anyone who has a problem with that can always invest in ear plugs.

Totally agree OP, if they want to chat loudly they should sit in another carriage - I was on a train recently and some people were doing the same and got told to shhhhhh by the train conductor

I just want peace, I have been working hard for days and wanted to read a book, something I never get time to do usually. I can't concentrate because of foghorn leghorn and her boring chat (the others have left now). I would have brought ear plugs if I hadn't booked a spot in the quiet carriage.

DD had a singing child last week, I told her to turn around and give him the death stare, fortunately the GP brought out the colouring so it wasn't required.

I like my quiet carriage to be silent, I particularly hate groups of 4 around the table with a picnic and chat.

Agree. Last week there was someone shouting down the phone to her grandad or someone - medical details. I made a face and pointed to the quiet sign and she said, "but he's deaf" !!

YABU of course, because there is no option to select to not have the quiet carriage when you book tickets. Perhaps you should direct your feelings towards the train companies who have never quite been able to fix this daft mistake.

For although the rest of the passengers in the carriage might be (silently) cheering you on, and willl spontaneously ensure a wall of silence to investigators; one noisy one might loudly defend the other unless double death is dealt.

YANBU OP. Not at all. If there are 8 other carriages it's completely fair that just one of them (12%) is for those who wish to travel in peace and quiet.

I travelled a whole 3hour journey in the quiet carriage with a noisy hyperactive toddler and didn't realise until the end it was a quiet one . Not one person complained (so British) but I imagine they were plotting a slow and painful death for me!

Noise- cancelling headphones have saved me from multiple homicide charges when commuting. You don't need expensive Bose ones - I have some £50 from Amazon that are worth every penny.
