Fruit and meat is WRONG.

Wrong, wrong wrong.

Lamb and watermelon salad - wrong.
Chicken and mango - very very wrong indeed.
Sultanas in a curry...really, must you?
Pork belly with rhubarb and cucumber - just why would you?

Ham and pineapple pizza - fine, okay then, if you must. Pineapple on a gammon steak - why would you if you could have a dippy egg? But once again, if you absolutely must.

AIBU?

YANBU - I've always hated this combination, all the traditional ones included. The only exception is lemon chicken but I'm not sure why, although chunks of fruit is worse than a smooth sauce - I've started to have a bit of plum sauce on my duck pancakes and it's not too bad.

OrlandaFuriosa · 22/03/2016 20:52

Nonsense. YABVU

Cockaleekie, has prunes
The traditional English sauces
Persian cookery, outstanding
Chutney, with any cold cut
Lemon with fish
Tomatoes are a fruit.
Quite a few Asian dishes.

Gammon works well with fresh pineapple. But should not be on pizza, I agree.

legalalien · 22/03/2016 20:55

Why has noone mentioned lemons or limes? Nothing to object to there, for fish, chicken, lamb - or even beef if thai or vietnamese?

legalalien · 22/03/2016 20:56

Cross post!

grumpysquash3 · 22/03/2016 20:56

OP I'm with you. Fruit and meat is gross.

Usually I choose meals from Christmas menus based on the fruit component. Turkey is always doused in cranberry stuff. The pork is usually with apple, the lamb with prunes or apricots. Once there was a choice of duck on a bed of lentils and sultanas.
Generally I end up with the fish option, but even then you have to be careful of the citrus..... The veggie option is a minefield!

We once got a selection pack of cheeses which all contained fruit (cheshire with cranberry, cheddar with apple, you get the drift....).

One of my best friends brought a chicken and mango panini in to work for lunch. I think I need to re-evaluate that friendship :)

Chestnuts are not in the same league as fruit, but I still hate it when the sneak into things.

kally195 · 22/03/2016 20:58

Penguine it really, really is. Plain balsamic vinegar drizzled over works perfectly, but if you can get your hands on a thickened balsamic sauce (Lidl do one) then that is also very good. The whole mix of sweet, sharp fruit, salty bacon, tangy vinegar and nutty cheese is just food porn.

It's a regular supper for us. Might have it tomorrow in fact!

Lambzig · 22/03/2016 21:01

Totally agree OP, but I don't really do cold savoury or hot sweet, so it fits with that.

TattyDevine · 22/03/2016 21:09

It's true that lemons and limes are fine - but not chunks of lemon or chunks of lime, the juice. It's chunks that offend me the most, personally.

And in fairness I said tomatoes were a fruit in my 2nd post thank you Wink

FourAge..id forgotten that they ruin both christmas cake and cheese but putting the two together!

Kajamite · 22/03/2016 21:20

My granny puts bits of melon in a prawn cocktail.

It sounds horrible but it's really lovely along with the sauce and prawns!

WhoTheFuckIsSimon · 22/03/2016 21:33

Banana in Chilli is fab. Thomasina Miers recipe so must be true.

Penguinepenguins · 22/03/2016 21:47

Sounds tremendous! I have a beautiful oak aged balsamic very thick quite sweet which I think will be perfect! But I think I also have a syrup in the cupboard too, use it on mozzarella and tomatoes - I'm salivating just thinking about it!

I shall definitely be trying this tomorrow!

NotMeNotYouNotAnyone · 22/03/2016 21:52

Yanbu I l hate citrus fruits with savoury food and don't like applesauce or cranberry sauce with meat.

Lucylanz · 22/03/2016 22:02

YABU but my favourite dish of all time is bananas wrapped in ham and baked in a cheese sauce so perhaps I'm biased. Ultimate comfort food - lovely hot gooey banana cheese ham goodness!

cupcakesarah · 22/03/2016 22:10

YANBU!! I agree with you so very much, the sweet and savoury things that do not mix! People do look at me oddly when I don;t have cranberry with turkey, or pork and apple, but apple belongs in a pie dessert, not a main

Tanith · 22/03/2016 22:22

I do a beef and banana stew for the kids. Nothing sweet about it: the bananas are green.

I can always guarantee they'll eat every scrap.

5Foot5 · 22/03/2016 22:34

YABVU.
Yesterdays lunch was a salad with ham, blackberries, crumbly Lancashire and walnuts and it was bloody lovely.

Tomorrows will have bresaola and nectarines.

How are you with fish and fruit? Thursday I am planning smoked mackerel with watercress and oranges.

howabout · 22/03/2016 22:35

YABVU

Fried bananas with fried breaded haddock is also lovely

Tinned pineapples are always wrong.

Beetroot bread and courgette or carrot cake are on my favourites list

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeG0es · 22/03/2016 23:21

I love smoked mackerel and watercress but oranges with it would make it absolutely inedible to me.

I do like lemon with some fish, and will conced that lime is amazing in Thai stir fries etc, but neither of those are sweet.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeG0es · 22/03/2016 23:23

My lunch tomorrow will be smoked mackerel pate made with natural yogurt, spring onions and Dijon mustard, those are the sorts of flavours I like with it.

Allalonenow · 23/03/2016 10:23

Smoked mackerel with gooseberries is a favourite here, and now that summer is on its way, Parma ham with melon or figs is a favorite quick lunch.

I like the flash of bright colour that pomegranate seeds add to meat dishes too.

sassolino · 23/03/2016 12:29

It might be not to your personal liking, but dismissing a lot of cuisines and recipes is totally unreasonable.

nancy75 · 23/03/2016 12:54

Ok, I need to know - all you banana in your dinner lovers - are you talking about normal yellow bananas?
If it's plantain then I can sort of get it, if it's normal yellow bananas, well, I don't get it at all!

howabout · 23/03/2016 12:59

Actual normal bananas, but weirdly I only like them slightly under ripe if not cooked. DH won't eat cooked bananas even in a dessert so he is with you nancy

I have never been adventurous enough to try plantain as I think it might need a bit of expertise and judgement.

spankhurst · 23/03/2016 13:01

YABU. I used to have a chicken and mango salad at a Caribbean restaurant and it was one of the tastiest things I've ever eaten.
