Gone off Eddie Izzard a bit although it pains me to say it

just that, really. I suppose I feel in my gut that his latest mammoth marathon effort (and every respect to him for achieving it as I was born in same year and couldn't even run for 5 mins) is not 100% about raising money for charity. I do wonder just how much "cor blimey you are just SO AMAZING and compassionate" type of validation any individual needs.

firesidechat · 22/03/2016 09:25

Do you think all those average people running in charity marathons get nothing from it for themselves? That is doesn't make them feel good to?

I like Eddie I and so what if he's a flawed human being like the rest of us. It makes me like him more.

firesidechat · 22/03/2016 09:26

too not to

RhombusRiley · 22/03/2016 09:30

I like him, not least for blazing a trail for men to wear what they want. I always feel like I'd like him as a friend.

Why shouldn't he do something that brings him gratification? When I read about it I thought, that's a bit extreme, but you know, if he wants to do it and he can raise money for good causes doing it, there's nothing wrong with it. It's also good for someone in the public eye to visibly set an example of doing exercise, as it encourages the rest of us.

No he doesn't have to look after DC and do the dishes, but the guy has thus far not had any kids or settled down... his choice and well done to him for doing what he wants.

SirChenjin · 22/03/2016 09:36

Jeez - there's always one miserable fucker who can't stand to see others doing something worthwhile and absolutely bloody amazing.

Well done him - he's just run 27 marathons in 27 days. Your achievement today is to start some whiny thread on MN OP. Was no-one paying you any attention?

MuddhaOfSuburbia · 22/03/2016 09:37

I think he's great

I didn't see the prog on this bunch of marathons, but I saw the last one

It was gruelling to watch, let alone do

The stuff about his mum Sad iirc he went back to his old house as it was near his route

Plus. Not a week goes past in this house without someone doing variations of the 'he's dead.no he isn't.yes he is' thing

its been a loooong winter

Last one we watched, me and OH observed that EI is a sort of superbeing dropped here from space. His to do list must be fucking enormous

bibbitybobbityyhat · 22/03/2016 09:38

I think its the fact that its the second time he's done it and we had the 4 part tv series and the dvds and all the media kerfuffle around him not so long ago (it seems). But, anyway, I am the opposite to most on here and most of you loves him even more after this new effort and I'm sure have donated generously so that's all good.

I do confess to being a bit fed up with the unbending "If you can't say anything nice don't say anything at all" mantra on Mumsnet these days. Its all a bit NetMumzzz. I didn't say I think Eddie Izzard is a self-aggrandising twat and I did say it pains me to feel the way I do.

OP posts:
SirChenjin · 22/03/2016 09:39

Does it pain you?

Well don't say it then.

bibbitybobbityyhat · 22/03/2016 09:40

See what I mean?

OP posts:
katemiddletonsothermum · 22/03/2016 09:41

Hi OP, nice to see you back on your thread. I thought you'd done a runner from all the flaming.

However, I would like you to answer my question which was posted early on this thread - how much did you personally give to Sports Relief this year?

suzannecaravaggio · 22/03/2016 09:42

I agree that all that running is a difficult thing to do, but I fail to see how running in and of itself for any distance is worthwhile?
It keeps you fit but a few miles a day would be enough, its quicker than walking but if it was important to get somewhere quickly you'd cycle or drive

Sometimesithinkimbonkers · 22/03/2016 09:42

After he got seriously ill trying to do it 4 years ago, I think he is s bit daft to try it again!
Yes it is amazing but really stupid to put your body and mind through that sort of stress!!!
Greg James is 30 years younger and did 5 triathlons in 5 days and the pain on his face was overwhelming.... Also raised well over £1 million.

I think Eddie Izard is quite funny but I just don't think this is a sporting accomplishment.... It's a bit silly. If he drops dead tomorrow .... Is it worth £1.5 million!!!!

RhombusRiley · 22/03/2016 09:44

OP I agree with you and we should be able to discuss people in the public eye and say if they annoy us. I disagreed with you but I have no problem with you having a kvetch.

People who say "if you can't say anything nice don't say anything at all" always have exceptions to that rule. We're all allowed to bitch about Michael Gove or Jim Davidson.

SirChenjin · 22/03/2016 09:45

Whether or not he's 'daft' is irrelevant - he's a grown man and can make that decision for himself. He's raised an amazing amount of money doing something that none of us on here will ever do. I'd rather be impressed by that than whinge about being fed up of MN and having pained feels.

bibbitybobbityyhat · 22/03/2016 09:50

I'll have to check with dh how much we donated, it all comes out of the joint account. Can I get back to you Kate? Probably £50 that's our standard for big events like this. Would you like to see a screen shot of our account page?

Done a runner from all the flaming Grin.

No, I went to bed.

Every year, there is a marathon event held at Lake Windermere where a small group of runners do 10 marathons in 10 days to raise money for the Brathay Trust. They do 9 days as a small group then on the last day there is a larger scale marathon and lots of marathon runners join the 10 in 10ers for the last marathon and cheer them off like they are heroes.

It's hard and it's painful and it's both mentally and physically taxing but lots of them do it year after year. One friend of mine has done it 6 times. He had one year off and missed it!!

I think extreme running is just like any other sort of running - the more you do, the more you want to do and the more you can do and the further you have to push yourself to feel challenged. I only started running to lose weight and never intended to go more than 5k. Now I've run a marathon and multiple events in a day and 5k has become something I do when I'm feeling a bit lazy.

Eddie has done multiple marathons before and I would guess that this step up is a similar sort of thing. He is very fortunate that his fame means that he can raise a lot more money and a lot more awareness than the average runner for his challenge but I don't think it makes him any different to countless other runners who push themselves doing something they love in the hopes of raising money for a charity that means something to them.

suzannecaravaggio · 22/03/2016 10:00

Extreme running is an addiction, many would say it is a harmful addiction, anorexia althetica

SirChenjin · 22/03/2016 10:03
Grin

Not in all cases suzanne - obviously.

suzannecaravaggio · 22/03/2016 10:28

He's spent countless hours doing something pointless!
Why not spend that time doing something useful and productive, some sort of community work maybe and get people to sponsor him to do that?

Lweji · 22/03/2016 10:29

He's spent countless hours doing something pointless!

Like MNetting?
Or watching footie on tv?

Sandsnake · 22/03/2016 10:30

OP I think you're just being a contrarian. It's not an attractive characteristic IMO.

I think Eddie is amazing. I think everything that I've ever heard about him points to him being an excellent person. I saw a class of little kids run their Sport Relief mile on Friday and it struck me what a fantastic thing that it is - encouraging children to be active and also raising money for those less fortunate than themselves. Win win.

katemiddletonsothermum · 22/03/2016 10:34

No, you're alright, bibbity I'll take your word for it. Just, you know, glass houses.

LikeDylanInTheMovies · 22/03/2016 10:37

Well bibbity I bow to your superior knowledge of Mr Izzard's finances.

I assume you have 'quietly written a cheque' equalling 15% of your assets. Otherwise that would make you a mealy mouthed hypocrite.

SirChenjin · 22/03/2016 10:43

How do you know he doesn't do that as well Suzanne? Y'know, when he's not suffering from anorexia althetica.

ElementaryMyDear · 22/03/2016 10:45

How precisely is raising £1.5 million pointless, suzanne?
