Gone off Eddie Izzard a bit although it pains me to say it

just that, really. I suppose I feel in my gut that his latest mammoth marathon effort (and every respect to him for achieving it as I was born in same year and couldn't even run for 5 mins) is not 100% about raising money for charity. I do wonder just how much "cor blimey you are just SO AMAZING and compassionate" type of validation any individual needs.

"hitching it to fundraising helps to mask the fact that he gains an enormous personal publicity hit"

It doesn't mask it. Well, only to people who aren't very good at thinking..........

suzannecaravaggio · 22/03/2016 11:25

The end justifies the means?

JanetOfTheApes · 22/03/2016 11:27

Or he did something he wanted to do, enjoyed AND raised millions at the same time. The very opposite of pointless in fact.

Like if you could get a few quid for charity by bitching on MN.

MitzyLeFrouf · 22/03/2016 11:27

I'd imagine most people would agree that the £1m+ ends more than justify the means! Not that the means need justifying......

Lweji · 22/03/2016 11:28

The end justifies the means?

He didn't exactly hurt anyone. Hmm
You didn't even have to register that he had done it.

SirChenjin · 22/03/2016 11:29

Unless he's doing something illegal then sure, the end justifies the means. Surely this cannot be a revelation to anyone?

MitzyLeFrouf · 22/03/2016 11:30

Quite frankly the only ones with the right to complain are his knees.

suzannecaravaggio · 22/03/2016 11:36

Raised 1.5m
Raised the value of the Eddie Izzard brand by a considerable sum too no doubt
Win win

SirChenjin · 22/03/2016 11:40

Yep. That's how it works.

Oh - you forgot the bit about him getting to do something he loves to raise the money.

LikeDylanInTheMovies · 22/03/2016 11:40

Or he did something he wanted to do, enjoyed AND raised millions at the same time.

I like Ice Skating, but if I had to Ice Skate to the point of exhaustion every day for 27 successive days. Ice skating would turn from being something I wanted to do to an endurance test of absurd proportions.

SirChenjin · 22/03/2016 11:44

Ah - that's because you don't have anorexia althetica Like Grin

MuddhaOfSuburbia · 22/03/2016 11:46

So basically all the slebs that do stuff for comic/sports relief are trying to raise their profile and raise some quids in the process?

Or just Eddie specifically

Whatabout other Feats of Daring/exertion. Like Davina and whatsisface off Britains got talent- think he's done it twice

Are they all cunts? Just updating my self aggrandising celebrity cunts list so far just got Gary Barlow

Lweji · 22/03/2016 11:51

Pretty much any celebrity that you see publicly donating money or doing anything for other people to donate are cunts.
So are private people who do the same (FB I'm looking at you).
All cunts.

We should just all google charities and quietly do a bank transfer. Preferably anonymous.

JanetOfTheApes · 22/03/2016 11:56

Maybe nobody should ever fundraise or give to charity, then we can all be pointless cunts together?

SirChenjin · 22/03/2016 12:06

Agree.

Although the downside of that of course is that it means there will be one less whingey thread on MN.

Maudofallhopefulness · 22/03/2016 12:11

FFS, how many gazillion arseholes are there out there that are worth hating before we get to Eddie Izzard. He's done an amazing thing for charity. Go him!

lljkk · 22/03/2016 12:18

He looks more manly than ever (look at that jaw line!!) after achieving this feat.

I don't think he properly appreciates the maelstorm of transgender politics that he's about to get dragged into. I predict his political ambitions will get ruined by extremists who use the same labels.

Pity because I think his heart is in all the right places.

MuddhaOfSuburbia · 22/03/2016 12:27

Nobody is wholly altruistic

mn 2000 years ago

have you seen that Jesus on his fucking donkey

ooooo does he think he is

SirChenjin · 22/03/2016 12:28

Nah - he'll be fine. I don't think the average voter really gives a toss about transgender politics - they're more concerned about the persona, and he's generally well liked and respected. He's an intelligent man, he knows what's ahead of him, but he'll deal with it.

Sometimesithinkimbonkers · 22/03/2016 12:31

How many children did you feed or vaccinate or educate in the last 27 days?

Errrmmmm .... 3 actually only 1 had a vaccination but do I earn extra awards as one had an operation? One also moved up 2 reading levels!!! Grin

MuddhaOfSuburbia · 22/03/2016 12:31

not comparing EI to Jesus btw tho an Izzard/Jesus mash up would be interesting

I'm just a bit worried about this trend- I've seen it a lot recently- where people doing Good Shit raises your ire and you find a way to rationalise it

do gooders
virtue signallers
oooo do they think they are
Hmm

....and then it makes it sort of morally defensible to do fuck all yourself

of course I blame the government

JanetOfTheApes · 22/03/2016 12:32

Grin @ Muddha.

Did you see that fucker, turning water into wine? Couldn't he just have brought some fucking wine in the first place, the cheap but showy bastard?

BertrandRussell · 22/03/2016 12:50

The reason we remember Jesus rather than all the other prophets is that his PR was so good. The donkey in particular. And the wine. And the walking on water.

SirChenjin · 22/03/2016 12:52

I do wonder just how much "cor blimey you are just SO AMAZING and compassionate" type of validation any individual needs

Obviously a whole fucking shedload in the case of the Baby Jesus

Lweji · 22/03/2016 12:54

The fish and the bread, and the sick and the blind...

Curiously the resurrection was a private affair. Mostly went viral through social networking.
