To offer an adult chicken nuggets for their tea?

DS & I have chicken nuggets (with potatoes & veg) for tea every Friday as an end of the week treat.
This week we will have a family friend with us for our evening meal, she is a lovely lady who is in her mid-60s (I think that maybe relevant).
So...WIBU to offer her chicken nuggets for tea? Should I get something more grown up?

So I'm just back from local shops.

The choices for tea are now:
Chicken nuggets
Chicken goujons
Salmon

Sorted, right...? Halo

{thumbs up} you should show her this thread, and maybe the Bear one from classics for a dinner party giggle!

BertrandRussell · 18/03/2016 10:15

This is Mumsnet. She's over 60.

She should be grateful that she's allowed to sit at the table with normal people and she should be thankful for whatever she gets.

If, indeed, she is physically capable of getting out of her house. Presumably she spends most of her evenings reading People's Friend and reeking of Yardley's Lavender..................

SaucyJack · 18/03/2016 10:18

"For those who've suggested kievs instead, the ingredients are not going to be that different, are they? Just the garlic butter in the middle and slightly bigger bits of chicken breast to distinguish them from nuggets."

True, but then again you'd get some flavour and moisture from the garlic butter which would liven it up a bit for most people.

It's not just about food quality (not least cos I only eat the Quorn ones anyway), but I think you'd have to have very specific taste buds to see dry nuggets and potatoes as a yummy treat.

My Friday night fav is a takeaway Thai green curry by the by- should anyone feel the urge to invite me round for a food fest.

Spot on, Bertrand. Presumably also voicing unacceptable opinions which must be forgiven on account of her generation....

motherinferior · 18/03/2016 10:29

And wearing beige support stockings and possibly a girdle.

(Surveys own denim miniskirt and yellow bra)

CallousAndStrange · 18/03/2016 10:36

YABU for mentioning it on here. Now I need chicken nuggets...and we have none in the freezer! Oh woe is me... Sad

BathshebaDarkstone · 18/03/2016 10:38

I know at 68yo who lives on shit with no veg except peas, he brought fish fingers to my birthday supper as he doesn't have a freezer. I'm pretty sure he'd love chicken nuggets! Grin

PigletJohn · 18/03/2016 11:01

Countess,

I don't agree about "pink slime" being a myth.

Observe the ingredients list on these things.
www.princes.co.uk/our-products/meat-pies-and-ready-meals/hot-dogs/hot-dogs-8s-in-brine/

There is a reason why the label does not show the words "meat" or "sausage."

Helendee · 18/03/2016 11:15

Baby Ganoush I disagree, as a guest I would be grateful for anything(within reason) that I was offered and wouldn't expect a friend to go to a lot of trouble.

WeDoNotSow · 18/03/2016 11:19

Savaloys are mechanically seperated crap meat. Usually some sort of chicken/pork/beef (sometimes all 3!) mix.
Saveloy and chips, I'd serve that to an adult from the chippy anytime.

DeeJaneH · 18/03/2016 12:08

I would make an effort, If I had invited someone round for tea, I don't think chicken nuggets is an effort.

SeekEveryEveryKnownHidingPlace · 18/03/2016 12:11

I think it would have been like giving her ribena in a spouted cup! Just weird.

Maureenc · 18/03/2016 13:23

I'm giggling at Bertrand's message. I'm over 60 and will eat whatever is served up wherever I go. I'm recently widowed and don't use Lavender or read the Peoples Friend LOL

Thinking about it - I've never, ever eaten chicken nuggets or served them to my children or grandchildren so think I'd probably enjoy the experience. Go for it!

Wordsmith · 18/03/2016 13:29

I'm in my 50s and no way would I consider Chicken Nuggets with mash a treat. But you know your guest!

WeAllHaveWings · 18/03/2016 13:36

Chicken nuggets (or any chopped, mashed up or reformed chicken) are vile. Chicken Goujons or chicken kiev (made with whole chicken/fillet) are acceptable but still not something I would serve to a guest.

DuckAndPancakes · 18/03/2016 13:41

I'd be well chuffed.

Bloody lovely.

bakeoffcake · 18/03/2016 13:57

I'm sorry I dont like chicken nuggets but I LOVE a fishfinger or two or three

Cruntie · 18/03/2016 14:16

Chicken nuggets? You mean those ghastly things that poor people sometimes eat? Unthinkable!

eloquent · 18/03/2016 15:00

I'd be happy whatever my friend served me. They are a friend for a reason amd not because they serve me delicious food.

SomedayMyPrinceWillCome · 18/03/2016 16:53

Update!!
She has chosen chicken goujons
It's all being cooked now

Tip for next time. Boneless chicken breast into chunks dipped into egg, seasoned flour and crushed up cornflakes then throw in oven. Perfectly respectable in every way.

Janeymoo50 · 18/03/2016 17:58

Yay, good choice.

CallieG · 18/03/2016 18:53

I would stop feeding your son chicken nuggets and introduce him to something much healthier, I never told my kids that Rubbish food was a "Treat" you can buy chicken breasts, cut them up , crumb them yourself and make your own "Nuggets" . Those manufactured, frozen battered chicken lumps really are one of the most disgusting things ever invented. I would call your friend ahead of time and ask her if she is willing to eat them or if she would prefer something more nutritious. If you use fresh chicken breasts , & use cornflake crumbs with chili flakes or powder added to the flour & crumbs it tastes like KFC Hot & Spicy & is much better than those nugget things.
