To offer an adult chicken nuggets for their tea?

SomedayMyPrinceWillCome · 17/03/2016 11:00

DS & I have chicken nuggets (with potatoes & veg) for tea every Friday as an end of the week treat.
This week we will have a family friend with us for our evening meal, she is a lovely lady who is in her mid-60s (I think that maybe relevant).
So...WIBU to offer her chicken nuggets for tea? Should I get something more grown up?

I dont' see anything wrong with chicken nuggets as a meal. Granted, it's not what we usually eat at home (only very occasionally) but I was brought up to appreciate and enjoy all food when a guest at someone else's house.
If that's what you and your ds enjoy, and you're expecting company, do it! Although in case you're inadvertently catering for food snobs, maybe home cook them from scratch and re-name them chicken goujons or strips instead. Smile
Garnish the adult's portion with a sprig of coriander as well then you can rest in the knowledge they've got something 'grown up.' Grin

LifeofI · 18/03/2016 01:12

I wouldnt mind them but it depends on how close you are with the guest i suppose

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 18/03/2016 03:22

I would have just got her a bit of salmon

SomedayMyPrinceWillCome · 18/03/2016 07:03

Ooh, salmon. Now that's an idea - nice & easy to cook too

yumyumpoppycat · 18/03/2016 07:09

goes with potatoes and veg too!

Traingirl · 18/03/2016 07:14

We always have a Friday treat in my house. I'd be over the moon if it was chicken nuggets.

Cook grown up meal and child can have nuggets on the side? Think it would be bizarre to serve an older person.

kamillaw · 18/03/2016 07:37

Chicken Kiev or something for the grown ups! Yummy!

Chickens don't have EARS? Wait, what???

How do they hear then???

embroideredbee · 18/03/2016 07:47

they have ear holes I think but no actual edible ears

00100001 · 18/03/2016 07:48

They definitely have ears!

To offer an adult chicken nuggets for their tea?

Birdseye Chicken Nuggets ingredients:
Chicken Breast (41%)
Breadcrumbs (Wheat Flour, Water, Yeast, Salt, Paprika, Turmeric)
Water
Flour (Wheat, Maize)
Rapeseed Oil
Chicken Fat
Salt
Natural Flavourings (contains Celery)

OP hasn't said but if she is throwing a meal together on Fridays after a long day at work - end of the working week - end of the school week - she's tired, DS is tired, he's young and goes to bed earlyish - why not go for something quick and easy from the freezer? Especially if she's on a tight budget, which I suspect some of the people decrying nuggets aren't, and perhaps have never been.

For those who've suggested kievs instead, the ingredients are not going to be that different, are they? Just the garlic butter in the middle and slightly bigger bits of chicken breast to distinguish them from nuggets.

I will always be grateful to chicken nuggets. My son was a very picky eater indeed as a child and chicken nuggets were one of the few foods he would always eat. I bought Tesco organic ones at the time Grin which had very similar ingredients to the Birdseye list above. He is 22 now and will (thank god) eat just about anything. It doesn't seem to have done him any harm.

MackerelOfFact · 18/03/2016 07:59

I know you've decided against the nuggets now OP, but FWIW as a guest I would always rather be served convenience food (including nuggets) that requires minimum effort so I can spend more time with my host than have them slaving away in the kitchen for ages to give me something more fancy while I sit there twiddling my thumbs (after offering to help, obviously).

Salmon seems like a good compromise thoigh! You can get bake-in-the-bag fillets
from the fish counter with herby butter so still minimum effort.

MrsTickleMonster · 18/03/2016 08:06

I am a grown up (most of the time) and was offered waffles and nuggets for tea at a friend's house last night. Enjoyed every mouthful! Grin

Spring2016 · 18/03/2016 08:07

You could slice some boneless chicken breast. I bet your DC would like chicken strips, or even not sliced chicken, coated in seasoned bread crumbs then fried in a bit of oil, or baked. I happen to really like this, and would be happy to see that on my plate.

needastrongone · 18/03/2016 09:14

HRTFT, but chickens definitely have ears, I have 8 (chickens, not ears). They can hear me rattling a tin of corn from a radar of about 300 miles, it would seem. They are where the diagram above states, different colours dependent on breed.

I would be going round to the house to see a friend. I wouldn't care less what was fed to me, and if I did, it would say more about me than about them.

INeedNewShoes · 18/03/2016 09:25

I know many grown-ups who would absolutely relish the opportunity to have some chicken nuggets for tea!

It's not something I eat very often, but I sometimes have them as a treat . They make a nice change from my otherwise relatively holier-than-thou good diet Grin

motherinferior · 18/03/2016 09:29

It would say: I like nice food. Not necessarily pricy food, or complicated food - just nice food.

I never get this 'you don't go out for the food' cliche. I certainly make a bit of an effort when friends come round to eat, and hugely enjoy it when they've done the same.

Helendee · 18/03/2016 09:36

Laughing out loud at the amount of food snobs around. What on earth is wrong with serving chicken nuggets to a friend? She's coming for tea not a state banquet!

Only in a rich, over-privileged country could people get their undies in a twist about a meal.

RetroHippy · 18/03/2016 09:49

Well I've just rtft and can only conclude that there is going to be a mass nugget-eating session this tea time.

I'm having mine with wedges, in a wrap with salad and sweet chilli sauce. Yum.

And yes, I'd be chuffed with nuggets as a guest. It says you consider the guest a part of the family and know they won't judge. I'm always a bit uncomfortable if I've gone to a friends for an afternoon and they make an effort to cook something 'special' for the adults. Makes me feel a bit inadequate - I'd be serving waffles Grin.

Different if it's a posh 'adults only' dinner party.

Bunbaker · 18/03/2016 09:49

"What on earth is wrong with serving chicken nuggets to a friend?"

It wouldn't bother me, but I wouldn't insult anyone, even family, by feeding them the heap and nasty scrapings off the floor ones. Nuggets made with real pieces of chicken are nice though.

BabyGanoush · 18/03/2016 09:52

Helendee, having lived in developing countries for most of my life, I'd say that only people from an overprivileged country would consider serving up cheap nasty reformed frozen tasteless chicken nuggets.

You see, if you have a guest you make an effort. This does not equal state banquet.

But, you know, something as nice as possible within your budget

Bunbaker · 18/03/2016 09:54

"You see, if you have a guest you make an effort."

That's the view I take.
