To offer an adult chicken nuggets for their tea?

SomedayMyPrinceWillCome · 17/03/2016 11:00

DS & I have chicken nuggets (with potatoes & veg) for tea every Friday as an end of the week treat.
This week we will have a family friend with us for our evening meal, she is a lovely lady who is in her mid-60s (I think that maybe relevant).
So...WIBU to offer her chicken nuggets for tea? Should I get something more grown up?

OP posts:

No, but many people in their 60s often don't judge quite so harshly anymore. They've seen enough Hyacinth Buckets in their time to become one.

paxillin · 17/03/2016 17:09

enough too many

PestilentialCat · 17/03/2016 17:11

I'd do breaded chicken breasts instead of nuggets, assuming it had to be kept almost the same as for DC. If not I'd probably make lasagne for everyone.

AppleSetsSail · 17/03/2016 17:11

Hang on. Hyacinth Bucket to not serve chicken nuggets to a dinner guest?

If the OP feels so strongly about it, she should serve nuggets. I wouldn't do it. It's not class-based posturing.

paxillin · 17/03/2016 17:14

Hyacinth bucket to judge the OP for it.

Twinklestein · 17/03/2016 17:15

Good grief.

paxillin · 17/03/2016 17:18

If somebody cooks, most people (and I'm sure OP's family friend) eat it and don't judge if it is naice enough. That would just be mean and ungrateful. If I go to eat with a friend who has a toddler and the meal contains something I don't normally eat I'd assume s/he is too busy to cook two meals and eat it. OP eats this every Friday with her ds and she's not trying to win a cookery show. If this friend is indeed a friend it will be fine.

AppleSetsSail · 17/03/2016 17:24

Hyacinth bucket to judge the OP for it.

You mean, apart from the fact that the OP has come here to you know, as for our judgement on the situation?

SuburbanRhonda · 17/03/2016 17:27

I don't think the OP came on to ask for our judgement.

I think she came on light the blue touch paper and retire, as she's not been back since starting the thread six hours ago.

I imagine that in 10 years' time I will still like nice food and indeed feel that Friday is a slightly kick-loose kind of an evening which deserves nice food after a week of work...

PinotEgregio · 17/03/2016 17:34

Will there be BBQ sauce? Crucial question.

I fucking love chicken nuggets. There are not enough chicken nuggets in the world. I even more love chicken nuggets and BBQ sauce. I never get to eat them because DH is a quinoa/samphire/whatever weird ingredient is fashionable this week foodie. I'd absolutely love to come for dinner at your house.

Polite guests eat what they're given* and say thank you very much. In any case, to be truly polite, you don't mention the food, because it was the people's company that was the important thing (think this rule has died by the wayside, but the thought behind it is sweet).

*guests with medical reasons not to, coeliac, diabetic etc. etc, excepted.

Notimefortossers · 17/03/2016 17:41

I recently went to a friends for lunch. Her DD is 2 and my boy is 1. She made fish finger, chips and veg for lunch. I'll be honest. I was a bit Hmm

CamboricumMinor · 17/03/2016 17:45

I wouldn't expect a guest to eat chicken nuggets, no.

hollinhurst84 · 17/03/2016 17:45

Can I come instead? And is there ketchup? Grin
My tea tonight is curly fries, chicken dippers and beans

Penguinepenguins · 17/03/2016 17:54

I love chicken dippers :) I'm Jealous of your tea hollin

But no I would never serve chicken nuggets from a packet to guests. closest I would go is to crumb a chicken breast and bake in the oven.

silvermantela · 17/03/2016 17:58

I would be a bit surprised to be honest.

If she is as lovely as you say, why wouldn't you want to treat her by getting something a bit nicer? Depends on what impression you want to give and what your relationship is like = getting the simplest thing out of the freezer won't suggest you're really happy to see her and this is a nice occasion, but will look like you consider her one of the family and not someone you have to make a fuss of - which she might prefer.

topcat2014 · 17/03/2016 18:00

Nuggets on wednesday in this house, when it is cubs etc. No complaints from me

ElderlyKoreanLady · 17/03/2016 18:01

I personally love nuggets. I don't care if they're made from chicken feet and bum holes...If it means those bits don't get wasted I'm all for it.

I've also forced down eaten some truly God awful meals out of politeness, even when the host's family have all told them how gross it's turned out. (One example being a layered tortilla, chicken pieces, tinned soup and grated cheese bake thing. Fucking horrible ) I can't bare to appear ungrateful to someone who's gone to the effort of doing me a meal.

That said, this really depends on the guest. I don't think I'd personally ever serve chicken nuggets to a planned guest over the age of 12. People as a whole have mixed feelings both about nuggets and about what is proper when you have guests. Many would wonder why you'd invited them for tea on a lazy cooking day. Not me though. I'd ask for some buttered white bread so I could make nugget butties.

mimsnet · 17/03/2016 18:08

Hi Someday,

Personally, I think that if they're a guest they should (hopefully!) enjoy whatever you decide to serve. However, if you're asking the question, it could be that you have an inkling that they would prefer something else?

If you think this isn't the case, serve the nuggets as you normally would. If not, you can either serve nuggets to your DC and something else for the adults or just serve something different for everyone.

I would love the nuggets, if I'm honest! Whatever you serve will be lovely :) Now, I'm going to abandon my dinner plans and run to McDonald's!!

TheFairyCaravan · 17/03/2016 18:18

I'd eat them and be delighted I wasn't being made to eat 'fancy' food.

The other night I did fish fingers, new potatoes and veg because we're running the freezer down. DH was pissed off (in a lighthearted way) because fish fingers go with chips and baked beans!

RortyCrankle · 17/03/2016 18:18

If home made then ok. If not I wouldn't eat them - reconstituted chicken bits is not my idea of anything edible.

NoCapes · 17/03/2016 18:31

Chicken nuggets are covered in batter and chicken goujons are covered in breadcrumbs

However chicken nuggets potatoes and veg sounds bland, dry and gross! Chips and beans or nothing atall!

OTheHugeManatee · 17/03/2016 18:31

I want chicken nuggets now Hmm

TheSkiingGardener · 17/03/2016 18:32

If they are nice ones with unprocessed chunks of chicken breast then yum. If they are the grey odd textured ones then yuck.

SuburbanRhonda · 17/03/2016 19:41

I personally love nuggets. I don't care if they're made from chicken feet and bum holes...If it means those bits don't get wasted I'm all for it.

They wouldn't get wasted. They would go into animal feed.
